The ancient Greeks' obsession with "fame" and "being known (for doing great things)" was always stupid and effeminate.
On the one hand, I can see where being able to trade on your name/reputation might be particularly important back then. But more importantly, the degree of servility (to the rest of society, to "the public") that the ancient Greek attitude takes on the question of "getting famous" is nothing short of disgusting. They can't even conceive of the joy in peaceful obscurity.

>Certain it is that Nicias, Demosthenes, Lamachus, Phormio, Thrasybulus, and Theramenes were prominent men, and his contemporaries, and yet we cannot so much as name the mother of any one of them; whereas, in the case of Alcibiades, we even know that his nurse, who was a Spartan woman, was called Amycla, and his tutor Zopyrus. The one fact is mentioned by Antisthenes, the other by Plato.
How will Nicias, Demosthenes, Lamachus, Phormio, Thrasybulus, and Theramenes ever recover??

Between Narcissu-I mean, Achilles, Paris being a complete retard and his father being a fucking mongoloid ignoring the war so he could beg the gods for help, the only decent man in this entire movie is Hector, and of course he gets a humiliating death for being honorable.

>The ancient Greeks' obsession with "fame" and "being known (for doing great things)" was always stupid and effeminate.
It stemmed from an ancient belief that your soul would be lost to nothingness after death if you weren't famous but if you were a legend, you would sit among the gods eternally. They thought your reputation was how you secured a place in the afterlife that wasn't shitty.

It's just the heathens filling up their belief system with stories to try to compete with The Bible. Everyone had heard of the LORD besting Pharaoh and leading the Israelites out of Egypt and back into Canaan. They could t compete with the stories of the Prophets (especially during this period which occurs alongside the book of Judges.) and so they invented these "heroes" who performed great acts due to their lineage of supposedly being descended from their gods. We think of heroism as being the act of saving lives or delivering others from tragedy against great odds but that's more of s modern invention. Heroism is defined as "great bravery", bravery is "being courageous" and courage is "doing that which frightens you." so the most classical definition of a "hero" is just someone who does things that would frighten most people but comes out the other side successful. That's why the original stories of heroes show them being morally grey or even evil because it was mostly about their ability to survive impossible situations more than their character that was being celebrated because they were stories that made the heathens believe they could stand up to the Israelites as they claimed the land the LORD had given to them.
It's only after Christians started white washing their stories that they start to become altruistic, which eventually transforms into super hero comics which then inspire Disney fairy tale heroes and Hollywood action heroes which is where our modern idea of a hero comes from.
