Rachel, "white girl", is continually rewarded and encouraged to be a whore and sleep around. Even incidents in her life which should force her to settle down, such as getting pregnant by her long time off-and-on boyfriend, she doesn't, and she is rewarded by the narrative for going against them.
Monica, on the other hand, is punished for wanting to settle down and have kids. She has a stable, non-dramatic, relationship with Chandler, and is punished by the narrative for wanting to actively choose to have children while she is in a stable marriage. She has to adopt.
This situation is all over western television for women, if a couple makes the informed and good choice to get married, have children, they will be punished with infertility. It happens in Sex and the City (Charlotte, the only non-whore), Dharma and Greg, a lot of character on Grey's Anatomy and Pretty Little Liars apparently. The ideological goal is to punish women for wanting to set marriage and child goals in their life.
