02/04/26(Wed)01:42:20 No.217765310 What was even the plot of this movie? It just felt like a bunch of random subplots and red herrings that didn't really connect to each other in any meaningful way.

It doesn't matter. Ethan has to keep his lesbian wife that hates him happy so he directs her dogshit scripts.

There is none, which leaves an empty feeling while watching it, because your subconscious is alerting you that it will end with a whimper.

We got to see Nico Robin's tits and a sex scene to boot.
That alone made this movie acceptable.

It's comical how paintfully untalented Ethan Coen turned out to be. Joel must be a turbo genius.

I have a feeling Ethan must be the kind of guy who is constantly having ideas and throwing shit at the wall and 99% of the time it's pure garbage, but the remaining 1% is brilliant and Joel has the vision to string that 1% into a coherent movie, while Ethan's lesbian wife must be the opposite and champions all his worst instincts.

"Avante-garde" and its just the safest adaptation ever that we're supposed to pretend its "artsy" just because its black and white and raceswapped.

Maltese Falcon the flick is pretty well known for being difficult to follow the plot I think. But, has great atmosphere, acting, directing, etc. So it doesn't really matter. Sort of the ideal version of 'mystery box' filmmaking. Where the plot doesn't REALLY matter, because you're enjoying the ride so much. Before that concept was corrupted by hacks.
Dashiell Hammett as an author is different though. The stories make sense. The conclusions always do. Although, there's always this bit in the middle of his novels where the detective is totally lost. It's all twisty-turned. He's suspicious of everyone, he's been tricked and played by all sides. So much that he doesn't even know what's going on anymore. And I think that because novels are much longer and you're privy to the characters internal thought process. He can write his way out of that mess. Whereas, in a movie you can get stuck in that
