I tried watching this but it was way too cheesy and tacky. Why do people overrated this goofy show? It's so cringe.

The first season is just as bad as the first season of Star Trek the next Gen.
The other seasons are better than anything with Star Trek in the title.
It's also totally different than the past 20 years of mystery box writing.
The entire plot is already known to the showrunner, so things are purposely held back, things are hinted for several episodes, sometimes for seasons, until the huge payoffs.
Mystery box writing is heres a big cliffhanger or here's a big mystery but we have no solution, we just like the idea of this cliffhanger or mystery, and another batch of writers will have to figure out how to fix this problem.

mystery box is cliff hangers and twists every episode, someones several times in an episode
this is why the wife is so awful in Breaking Bad, they needed the drama of cliff hangers and twists and it fell on her to constantly be shifting with the wind

First season of almost every great scifi show kind of sucks. It takes some time for them to figure out what works, and as they do, the actors start to recognize the potential and try a lot harder too. It's the same thing with Stargate and Star Trek.
When I first started watching it I started questioning my choice in season 1 as well, but the jump in quality is sudden and enormous.

You're a tourist to the genre if you think THIS show looks tacky, but it's nowhere near as cheesy as present-day sci-fi slop.

You have to watch all the seasons. The show is a slow buildup with several subversions. Some of the characters who seem to be 'good' are in fact bad, and some of the characters who seem bad turn out to be good or go through character development that makes them good. It's a journey.

Fun fact: Many people wonder why Susan Ivanova completely changed between seasons. According to Claudia Christian’s autobiography, Claudia had dinner with JMS after the first season and they had an awkward moment when she realized that JMS considered it a date and she didn't. JMS thought she was into older guys because she had been married to Gary Devore (google that guy, very deep and unsolved rabbit hole) who was 24 years her senior. However, Claudia had at this point decided that she liked really young guys more and was dating dudes who were literally still in high school. She claims JMS never treated her the same after that dinner and discovering that she was turning into a cougar.
