I disagree, the author is what one would consider "woke" and has drawn yuri-bait artwork of his characters before. From what I could tell, he would have actually made Momo x Jirou canon, but it seems he was stopped by someone higher up.(not just with this pairing, with all pairings)

It had one sided yuri. The problem really was that it was attached to the protagonist as a love triangle which was never gonna resolve without one of the members dying. Considering despite dying Toga still had more screen time then other characters and had a lasting effect on Ochaco it wasn't too bad. Ochaco does a charity where she travels to other schools to try prevent what happened to Toga from happening to other children and the event clearly fucks with her years later.
