That's literally impossible because SteamOS needs 16GB to work. These retards need to shut up. All signs point to it costing $700 with a controller because Valve needs to make it affordable but it can't cost less than some of their OEM partners nor can it cost more than others, it needs to hit a middle ground. They pulled this shit with the Switch 2. Leaks are showing they secured enough stock for the year or two. They insiders need to worry more about Xbox and especially Sony since everyone knows most, if not all, of these insiders are on Sony's payroll.

>That's literally impossible because SteamOS needs 16GB to work.
Yeah, I can't see Valve selling it as a barebones machine, and they'll want to have the 16+8GB configuration for their baseline.
No reason they couldn't make SteamOS work in a smaller amount of memory like 8GB, but I don't think they'd do that on their 1080p / 1440p device, and I doubt there is much of a market for a device below the Steam Deck right now.
>but it can't cost less than some of their OEM partners
That part though I doubt. All of Valve's OEM partners so far have also signed Microsoft's OEM contracts and that means they have to pay Microsoft for a patent license even when they ship Linux. They'll probably also be required by that contract to sell a Windows version of any system they ship too, which means they'll need to be higher spec to make up for that performance loss, and they'll be producing less of them, in smaller batches.
As a result, and as with the Deck, that will make it hard for anyone to match Valve in price/performance.
Maybe one of those companies would grow some balls and take Microsoft to court over their bullshit, but that would be a long and expensive court battle that I don't think any of them want to fight.

What they should do is make a "Steam Machine Lite" considering the Steam Machine itself will be $650-$750 and a "lite" version without a dedicated GPU (but a better CPU) would cost half as much. It seems like everyone for some reasons wants a $400 gaming PC and a shittier entry point device would satisfy that niche.

The problem with the Steam Deck is the weak CPU. It's a genuine bottleneck. They'd need to use something twice as powerful at least. Which they'd be able to afford in that case since they'd save a ton of money on avoiding the handheld form factor (screen, battery, controller, etc.)

Technically both. It's too weak to smoothly run many PC games or even Switch emulation. But yes, the real issue is hooking it up to a monitor or a TV. At that point you would no longer render the game at 800p and instead you'd run it at 1080p/1440p or maybe even 4k.
Sure it would be fine for 2D games and low-poly 3D games, but it would kind of suck at anything even a little more demanding. I remember the Steam Deck being unable to play Spyro Reignited above 35fps without reducing the resolution to 640p and enabling FSR.

Maybe we will see a refresh of the Deck hardware to standardize their whole product line on RDNA 3 / 3.5, but I think the Deck's SOC has a few more years in it before that happens.
Especially if Valve does get an official version of FSR 4 that works on the hardware, the unofficial version works pretty well.
If AMD continues to drag their heels on FSR 4, it might be more worth it for Valve to develop their own upscaler rather than commission a new SOC.

Valve will have placed bulk orders months ago, and a Linux machine with 24GB of memory total isn't going to be too badly affected by the spike in prices.
The big losers are going to be the Windows OEMs who have much tighter time tables, have to produce in smaller batches, and will have to redesign and up their RAM amounts sooner due to the ever growing demands of Windows 11.

Fair, I wouldn't assume they'd make a new one any time soon though, the tech isn't really there for a considerable improvement and they actually recommend streaming to your Deck if performance is inadequate.

RDNA 3.5 still isn't really enough uplift per watt currently, and it doesn't get them the official FP8 FSR 4.
If RDNA 3.5 gets FSR 4, using either RadV's feature emulation or through an official release of the INT8 model, then RDNA 2 gets it as well.
But it is possible the official release, or a Valve-tuned upscaler might benefit enough from RDNA 3.5 to make it worthwhile.
Would probably still be a weaker CPU in the TDP than any of the Windows OEMs would be interested in. So Valve might have to commission it.

This but unironically. Its totally in valve's style to just forget about its existence because of the ram prices making it impossible to be profitable; especially considering that ram prices are predicted to remain this shit until mid 30s.
Its kind of funny when you think about it. It was prophesied to be released along HL3 but instead it will share same same fate as HL3; never to be released and forgotten forever.

Combined with the 3nm/2nm monolithic Zen 6, it should be. Valve also has an alternative way to get FSR 4 without needing to natively get it from AMD and get it work in the hardware. RDNA 5 is too expensive and goes against what they want, plus it's too much work to get a chiplet to have little to no chiplet tax. Sony has a monolithic chip because their handheld is a console, Microsoft's chip is semi-custom and will have its own way of eliminating chiplet tax while using tricks for that as well. Valve doesn't have that kind of relationship with AMD on the level Sony and Microsoft has.

Yup, the plan is to permanently stop PCs from being built by consumers. All off-the-shelf stuff may go up in price. They're going to be selling us Steam Machines, Steam Decks, Xbox homes, and Xbox handhelds while also have semi-custom chips in them for affordable PC prices as the PC replacements. All these will have hardware development kits too, by the way. Future of PC gaming are console-like devices.

Valve isn't going to specifically nanny the desktop experience dummy, the cube is indistinguishable from any arch distro once you leave steam big picture
If anything it's strictly worse due to the limitations of immutability
If you want the cube experience now it'll be the same as installing an arch distro and telling steam to start in big picture but they don't load the desktop until you ask to enter it

Not arch, you will have to run updates eventually and they can potentially ask you to do stuff. It's not difficult if you have a brain but it's overkill for a dumb tv box, an immutable distro will be better there.
Of course there are other immutable distros which might well be better but it's not surprising someone might want the official one

I have to keep explaining this to slow people. It does not matter if you personally can use SteamOS/linux/arch right now. What matters is if one linux distro achieves dominance over the others, or better yet a linux distro competes with windows market share for games. This will finally break into the network effect windows has for personal computing and raise all the boats on linux. Linux will finally get native support instead of scraps left over from windows and mac. It will also be useable by normies in some form. Selling a few million decks, machines, and frames isn't the end. It could lead to hardware partners shipping with steam OS preinstalled. That's where valve wants to be. Making the hardware themselves is just for reference and demonstration. The future you should care about is mainstream linux on handhelds, PCs, and VR headsets instead of microsoft/google/apple/meta slop.
