Wrong, the Le Racism pearl-clutching over RE5 started as soon as the first gameplay reveals depicted chris in africa. None of the promotional material showed the tribal zombies that you encounter later in the game. The people screaming that african enemies in a game set in africa is racist didn't even know about the tribals.

And even if we assume the outright was about the tribals... so what? There's no actual reason why depicting africans in traditional african garb is racist. It's like saying the spanish ganados in RE4 who have reverted to dressing like medieval monks and inquisitors is a culturally insensitive depiction of spanish culture.

It's a bit more of a nuanced issue desu.
In RE4 it's clear that the Ganados were a bunch of Amish weirdos living out in the middle of nowhere even before the Plagas appeared. It's not saying Spain is a backwards country only that this specific village is and this is made even more clear by you being accompanied by two regular Spanish cops at the beginning.
Whereas RE5 takes place in a major metropolitan area that is a total shithole (infested by warlords) and they're surrounded by literal spear chuckers living in grass huts and Aztec ruins. The beginning of RE5 has a "normal" part as well where you see regular dudes beating animals to death in a bag and eating rotting meat. It's a VERY negative and stereotypical portrayal of Africa and I get why people were upset with it once the game released. But most of the journos who reacted to the initial trailers had no context for the full game and were just farming for clicks.

With that said, I love these niggas like you wouldn't believe. Some of the spookiest RE designs and they'd sadly be cut in a remake.
