bro sometimes it's not that deep, some games are just comfy to play even if you're not actively jumping for joy. like doom here - it's not about giggling like a schoolgirl, it's the vibe, the flow, the rhythm of shooting monsters to midi metal under a red sky. brain smooth, fun achieved.

If you can't stop playing it and find yourself cracking a smile or a grin when you do something in the game then you're having fun. If you have to stop playing and go do something else, and you keep thinking about when you'll be able to play it again, then you were having fun

It's because you've burned out your dopamine receptors. I'm the same, I've barely finished 10% of these and just keep replaying the same 4-5 games over and over again.

I remember when I first played Dead Space 2, I played it for an entire day straight and started a new save right after sitting through the end credits just so I could try hardcore. To this day, my first hardcore run is still one of the best experiences I've ever had playing a video game. Fun is subjective but, like other people have already mentioned, you can gauge it by how badly you want to keep doing something.

Daily reminder that the fun is a buzzword anon is unironically right. Nobody who is worth taking seriously would call a book 'fun'. Cinema can almost claim the same but recently the 'fun' buzzword entered the parlance of slop reviewers talking about the latest marvel movie or whatever, still if you go back 40 years you won't find it. Fun is a word you use when you can't explain something in retrospect because you lack ludic literacy.
What you should ask instead of whether the game is fun, is whether the game is good. This has a much more obvious answer. You can always talk about why the game is good: maybe you like the gameplay, or the visuals, or the music, or so on. But to call these things 'fun' is the sign of a moron.

Fun represents the ability that something has to keep you engaged with it without just promising an extrinsic reward around the next corner, it's the use of numerous psychological tricks to push your brain to keep pouring dopamine, something that is important for games, since they are fundamentally just teaching and conditioning tools and are thus dependent on the player being receptive to and capable of learning new things which is enabled by regulating dopamine. People complain about people just saying that something is "fun", because something being fun due to heavy reliance on Skinner boxes or only being fun with friends (everything can be fun with friends) generally isn't perceived as being a good quality.
"Fun" being a buzzword isn't rooted in the fact that people can't explain why something is fun, but rather that they just don't explain it, which means that "Good" is just as much of a buzzword when no one explains it.

How do you know if you are sad? Enraged? Happy? It is a state of mind, you experience it.
Naturally, one can, supposedly, measure brain parts reactions and correlate various measures with various mind states - but that isn't required for oneself.

If you're immersed in the game and not playing it out of any kind of obligation (wanting to prove yourself a fan, wanting to finish it just because you paid for it, etc), then you're having fun, that's how it works in my book
