Ken Kutaragi (Sony) offered a SPC 700 chip to help improve the sound quality of Nintendo. The sound chip led to a deeper collaboration between Sony and Nintendo.
Why did Nintendo drop Sony and choose Phillips?

Sony was a giant who was quickly taking more and more. At some point Sony didn't even want Nintendo to get royalties for any game sold on CD. Nintendo desperately escaped the relationship because they realized they were going to be swallowed by Sony and lose all autonomy.

Nintendo wanted every shekel possible, their jewish mind was scared that they left a loophole in the contract that allowed Sony to publish some non-gaming content without paying the fee, so they broke the contract. N64 uses cartridges because they quarreled with every CD drive licence holder

Believe in facts, why does every other console have a CD drive? Why did Nintendo lose the rights to Zelda and Mario, so CDI got those games? Why Gaycube had fuckin mini disks?
Nintendo was a monopolistic thug that controlled everything during the NES era, during the SNES period, they became nervous, and at the end of it, they lost their mind. The license for CD was with Sony and Philips, and they broke the contract with both, because they were so scared to rely on something they don't control

Because sony like the little kikes they are backstabbed nintendo at the last moment and tried to giga Jew them, thinking Nintendo needed Sony, but Nintendo just went lmao no fuck off
And sony is still seething about to to this day.
Basically sony altered the collaboration so that they would gain partial ownership of the games released on CD and Nintendo would have to pay Sony for every copy sold. Which is obviously retarded and nonsensical. Sony then preemptively announced the Collab to strongarm nintendo

The SNES sound chip was specifically designed to cripple the console and make them more dependent on the Sony deal. It's the worst sound chip in any system of the era, because it DEPENDED on the CD add-on that never came to be useful.
