you can use save states/rewinds but you only get the standard cheevos. Golds require hardcore mode, which disables save states (or more accurately it disables state loading), slowmo, and rewind
fast forward usually isn't disabled for hardcore mode, as in action games it will make it harder, and it slower games it may be so the game doesn't waste your time

You know how like, for years, /v/ anons joked about how there should be some form of verification that you've actually played a video game before you can talk about it on the internet?
Well RetroAchievements is that (especially since they've been actively bumping up anticheat and verification), and what you're seeing is either A) a shitton of posers that feel threatened over the fact that they could technically be called out at any time (even though realistically no one would actually share their profile here), or B) dinosaurs that are upset they might be called posers despite having played the games because they didn't do so in a verified manner

I like RA and some of my friends and me, all about 40, have been using the site on and off for almost a decade to revisit old games with some spice instead of just beating them for the hundredth time, sometimes you also just find gems you never heard about.
Some of course some can become tedious but some was cool, like in Lttp I would have never ever guessed that you can turn one random chicken into a woman.

most games other than fps would benefit from a fast forward. there's no way i would've gotten through baldur's gate 3 without speedhacking combat to run at 16x speed.
watching 30 units move and attack animate 1 by 1 for each turn in each encounter is excruciatingly bad game design. at least disgaea games have built-in animation skipping and speed dials (western devs will never discover this magic).

There are some genuinely mentally ill people on the site who hate playing the games and still do it 24/7 because they have some ocd compulsion for chievies and it's sad to watch.

Save states can be used to effectively turn back time whenever you die and continue like nothing happened, infinite checkpoints where they weren't intended. Fast forward is more likely to get you killed if you use it in sections that actually require skill, in "safe" sections it only cuts down on tedium. is the logic

it would still require effort and this effort is no longer required when you can just speed it up and hold down a turbo controller
you wouldn't be overleveled under normal circumstances because the effort required to get to that point would be too high for most people to consider it worth doing
fast forward completly changes how you play the game

That's doesn't sound hardcore. That's a softcore mentality. Which is why imo fast forward should've been banned.
I get it though, most people on that site are either 40+ or already mentally unstable enough.
It just makes Hardcore miss the mark a bit. For example, there a autistic subsets like grinding to max level at the beginning of a game.
The only reason these Subsets exist is because some autists 20 years ago thought it would be funny to put yourself through that grind.
With fast forwward though, there's no longer a reason for the challenge to exist at all as the whole point was for it to be a miserable slog.

Ofc it's arbitrary and i'm aware of that already. I don't mind the way it is now and i still enjoy playing this way. Just a different opinion on the subject.

02/04/26(Wed)13:41:12 No.732271015 I used to really think RA was really cool until I wanted to play some of the games.
Since only one autist can make a set, they make it as difficult as possible for some of them
It kinda sucks the fun out of some of the games

i've seen sets where the cheevos are made by like 3 different people
my favorite game's set is also not hard enough. doesn't even require 100% for some reason kek

If zoomers need such a lame incentive to play actual good games, they don't deserve to experience them and very likely won't fully appreciate them anyway because they'll be too busy completing checklists.

bumping up anticheat and verification is a response to an already-tainted dataset full of liars and cheaters.
it's already compromised. if you supremely fuck up the first half of a song in guitar hero you aren't going to get that 5 star rating at the end for FC'ing the last half of the song. you gotta start over.
and they can't start over without pissing off a bunch of people. lose-lose situation i have zero interest in getting involved with, ever. i don't need to prove shit to anyone.

Every month or so you need to re-login to refresh the token. So remove the password, try to connect (so it fails with a wrong password), then type in the correct password again. It'll refresh your token and allow you to connect.

02/04/26(Wed)16:08:13 No.732278617 I mostly use it for games I already played and enjoyed and wanted to play again anyway, so the cheevos are good incentives for that.
They also serve as a reason to actually engage with parts of the game you usually don't have a reason to. For example I like the Mega Man X games, but with all life bar extensions + body armor part that halves all damage + 4 subtanks I never bothered learning the patterns of the fortress bosses since I could easily tank the damage through their fights just dodging the bare minimum, so even if it's just for a meaningless badge now I have a motivation to actually get good at fighting them, and I'm having fun in the process.

Casual gamers do this. Hardcore gamers push themselves and the game to its limit, and I think this is why I used to have a visceral reaction to this stuff.
Id look at an achievement list and think good lord that sounds awful. I didnt want to admit I was casual gamer who just plays the game on "regular hard" and all the content he comes across along the way, with no interest in "mastering tech" or "speedrunning" or whatever.

Meaningless labels. It can be easily argued that the tranny that practices speedrunning one game for 2000 hours is just afraid of leaving his comfort zone while the gigachad variety gamer challenges himself with new experiences all the time.
