Why did they make the sequel so similar to Hollow Knight? The original was its own unique game, the sequel just diluted the identity for no reason.

they didnt, other than maybe the map guy, it doesnt really have much directly to do with HK
The combat was a given. It was Ori 1's main criticism: early game combat being just clicking, and while middle-lategame combat the fantastic reflects and environmental hazard stuff, it really could use being backed up by some more deliberate cool moves. It was natural for the sequel to be like that
The one other thing is the shards. The shards are insanely reminiscent of HK's charms, but if you think about it, if they were actually using HK's as inspiration, then the shards would probably not suck so badly. Like seriously so many of them are boring, so many of them are extremely superfluous stat buffs that do similar roles to eachother, and somehow a 10% damage boost on average costs as many slots (1) as being able to reflect projectiles with your sword, jumping thrice, and turning bows into machine guns

The only problem with Ori 2 in these departments is that it wasnt good enough at it. It really deserved the combat focus and honestly had an amazing player moveset for it, but the actual enemies, bosses etc are just nowhere near the potential of the moveset, so it feels pretty wasted a lot of the time. Shriek in particular is miserable, its advertised as a speed demon but all her non-final phases are a comically slow boss
blind forest is the better and way more well executed game but most ori fans arent ready for this conversation

Because nobody gave a shit about the original game. In fact after the first Ori, the developers wanted to move on to something else and started the development of what would become Nrftw.
A sequel to Ori wasn't even planned but at some point they realized their new project needed more development time than they expected, so they decided to take advantage of the ongoing collaboration with Microsoft studios and listen to the complain about the first Ori and make one last sequel in order to give their new project more time in the oven. All the complain about the original made so that the sequel was similar to what hollow knight was and now everyone thinks they straight up copied the most popular game of the time.

they made a better game by mimicking hollow knight to be honest

Lack of confidence in their own concepts, same as why damn near every other indie metroidvania copied Hollow Knight. Ori 1 holds up for its movement, visuals, and music. 2 is still very good but is muddy and indistinct. Taking bash off its own button is indefensible. I can understand wanting more combat but the tools are bloated and uninteresting. It feels like a romhack of Ori trying to make Hollow Knight rather than an evolution of Ori's concepts.

The combat improvements were needed and very welcome, but the rest?
