Just started this POS and wasted 2 hours running around without any hint of what i'm supposed to do. No quest markers, no nothing. Not to mention the clunky aah controls. Do people only praise this game because of nostalgia?

1. Start with the 1996 RE1. And play as Jill Valentine on your first round.
No, the remake is not the same game, and it is meant for OG RE trilogy's veteran fans.
Jill's route is also more forgiving and flows quicker, making it a good practice run for first-timers.
2. The point of classic survival horror is exploration, problem solving, and resource management.
The whole game is like a one big puzzle box; a sort of grand scale "room escape" experience, where you scale the risks and rewards every passing turn, and later on replay the game to slice off entire hours from the play-time, earning fancy rewards in return.
3. No, it's not nostalgia. Me and countless other fans have replayed the OG trilogy alone some dozens of times, and I've witnessed many, many youngfags pick up and play them for the very first time the past few short years, praising them to high heavens. The gameplay loop is outright addicting and makes you feel smart, and the atmosphere + audio work + cinematography are breath taking at best.
I know that the modern, casual AAA slop has rotten the generation's brains, but it is games like Resident Evil that help you heal that rot.

>Should I pirate the steam version or emulate the PS1 version?
Anything BUT the fucking Steam version!
I don't know how Crapcom managed to fuck that shit up, as it requires Windows 11 + Capcom's own DRM to boot.
The GOG's PC port of RE1 is okay, but has some weird bugs that don't appear on other versions (eg. you don't need Ink Ribbons on first run, and sometimes they just disappear on later playthroughs)
The PS1 versionS are arguably the best.
Out of the many versions on PS1, I recommend either the 1996 OG-OG, or the NORMAL "Director's Cut" one... which should not be mixed with the notorious "Dual Shock edition".
If you want arguably the best version of RE1, I would suggest the fan-made "True Director's Cut", that has all the uncensored goodness + classic OST (there's version with the shitty Dual Shock OST too, so choose right):

Failing that, the Nintendo DS port from mid-2000s is honestly a marvelous port, with a lot of unique content + various small QOL improvements.

NP!
The RE2 and 3 on GOG are fine.
But just about all the ports are good AFAIK.

Besides the game assuming that you have beaten RE1-3 many times before, it really is not. Zoom zooms are just too ADHD and instant-gratification seeking these days to appreciate some atmospheric, comfy horror-adventure gameplay.
