Does anyone actually enjoy the pre-RE4 games? Wandering around aimlessly in the mansion while watching these door animations is torture

Can't handle games without door animations. How can I believe I've moved between rooms without seeing the door? Do I just teleport from room to room? Does this whole facility have no doors? That doesn't make sense.

Yes. We do.
I've played the OG RE1-3 some 50 times, each, and OG RE4 some 20+ times by now.
Also, you made this same thread last night, and got owned: >>>737077603

All of them do.

You really should play the OG 1996 RE1 first.
Not only is it a better game, but it also will improve the REmake's experience and "whoa!" effect.
Here's a drive link to the fan-made "TRUE Director's Cut", that has all the uncensored cutscenes + the OG soundtrack (choose the right-most one):

I did

Wouldn't say better. They felt mostly the same, people should stop tootin their horn about "remake bad" when the only valid argument they have is the choice system being removed. Lisa (albeit drawn out) is a very nice addition to the story.
>but the remake looks all decrepit!
It's a mansion that's been overrun with zombies for probably a few weeks. 1996 wasn't that far away from 2002, I am willing to bet that the vision for the mansion was supposed to be equal to the remake but couldn't
I'm not harping on people that prefer original to remake. I'm annoyed more of those who think they hold some major moral high ground because they're the last soldier fighting a war that was resolved years ago.

I never claimed the REm1 to be "bad". Hell, it's one of my favorite games, and literally the blueprint of how to remake a classic game the RIGHT WAY to anyone who was already gaymin' back in the early 2000s.
But it does have quite a number of flaws. The pacing is worse, and I honestly feel like even the controls are more floaty.
And this is in the 2002 GC OG alone. The HD port has a plethora of other, mostly lesser issues.
>I am willing to bet that the vision for the mansion was supposed to be equal to the remake but couldn't
There you are partially correct, as is evident in the pile of OG concept art that was unearthed a few years ago.
That being said, RE1 went though many revisions during its design and even development phase, and I'm not talking about the first-person gameplay alone, which was sacked already in pre-production. One of the first, wildest ideas Mikami had included 4 to 5 different houses and CASTLES that you would explore, one by one, each with different vibe and age. At this point, the game was practically going to be a literal Sweet Home 2.0, with ghosts, goblins, and GITS style cyborg squad as the playable characters.

>everyone throws their hat in the ring with the comment "but actually the original is better"
Being "better" does not automatically mean that the other would be "shit".
REmake used to be this holy grail to every OG RE-fag for a couple decades, until the HD port suddenly dropped and made it more accessible. And judging by its massive sales, positive reception, and the fact that it single handedly saved Capcom from bankruptcy, it's evident that even the "modern audiences" dig the classic style survival horror if given a chance to get used to them.

Like I told OP last night:
Play anything BUT the goddarn Steam version!
I don't know how Crapcom managed to fuck that shit up, as they require Windows 11 + Capcom's own DRM to boot.
The GOG's PC ports are okay, but the RE1 PC versino has some weird bugs that don't appear on other versions (eg. you don't need Ink Ribbons on first run, and sometimes they just disappear on later playthroughs).
The PS1 version(S) are arguably the best.
Out of the many versions on PS1, I recommend either the 1996 OG-OG, or the NORMAL "Director's Cut" one... which should not be mixed with the notorious "Dual Shock edition".
If you want arguably the best version of RE1, I would suggest the fan-made "True Director's Cut", that has all the uncensored goodness + classic OST (there's version with the shitty Dual Shock OST too, so choose right):

Failing that, the Nintendo DS port from mid-2000s is honestly a marvelous port, with a lot of unique content + various small QOL improvements.

Correct. Because it's a great game that started it all, with many objectively superior aspects.
Again, does not mean that the Remake would be "bad". The HD port is quite lackluster, even if it works okay.

Is it really that hard for iPhone posters to understand that things can be on a spectrum, not just black & white "Greatest thing EVA!" / "Shittiest thing imaginable" ?
The pros are: it works, and can be played like the OG if you want.
The cons: it looks like doodoo, has fixed rendering resolution of 1440p, the 2D control scheme is ass, and the added Very Easy mode is gay as hell + makes newbies think that the regular "easy" would be the "normal" mode.

a lot of cons for someone who claims that the HD port is "just slightly inferior" don't you think?
You wouldn't be playing both sides just so you can still say that og is better but while also stealthily insulting the HD port, hm?
