Stars dictate the amount of stats you get. Higher stars, higher stats. Simple enough.

Rarity dictates the amount of substats that are unlocked by default (grey 0, green, 1, blue 2, purple 3, gold 4).

Hitting level 3/6/9/12 will unlock the 1st/2nd/3rd/4th substat for cores that don't have it yet.

If you do have it already, hitting that level will give a boost to one random substat instead.

So the higher the rarity, the more boost chances you get because you already have the slots unlocked.

Unfortunately I was going in blind and didn't know which ones paired well. I rerolled for 3 dickpicked SSRs initially and suffered because everything was extremely slow and weak. I gave up and rerolled another 3 accounts for 3 SSRs then played all of them until one pulled more SSRs and stuck with that. Things are going really fast now and I don't regret it. If there was a cheap beginner package single SSR guarantee that most games have I would've just done that instead desu.

both are incredibly mediocre, but personally i'm a lot more lax on mediocre jrpgs than to mediocre action games.
squad has an absurd amount grinding and timegated shit, and really low pull distribution for how many things require lots of characters. i'm hoping the first two points get adjusted as the beta continues, and while i would like them to be a little more generous with the full release i have very low expectations as it's clear they want people to spend to fill out their facilities.
