My favorite arcade-like shmups are Crimzon Clover and Psyvariar. I've also been playing Einhander sometimes lately, I don't exactly love it but getting farther and farther on each attempt is pretty satisfying.
I'm also a big fan of rhythm games, especially the rock band series and DJMAX. There's also a touhou-themed rhythm game (Dankagu PL) which I can easily recommend to anyone who likes 2hu arrangements, it's pretty cheap nowadays.

I'm not good at them at all but when I had my shmup phase I got really into Battle Garegga and the Gradius series, especially Gradius V and Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius (Parodius series is unmatched in terms of aesthetic and music, just pure fun)

I love Alien Soldier and Cuphead, they're two of my favorite games of all time. I never really got into Contra, and I've never 1cc'd a Metal Slug game because I'm a shitter and they don't give you any extends.

I like pinball a lot. I have most of the Williams packs on Pinball FX and I was able to "beat" Addam's Family by clearing all the rooms and getting a pretty high score (top 300 on the leaderboard)

Want to get into shmups but gaming backlog is too long already. Same for fighting games (more seriously than just casual level)

It's a cool concept but I don't think this general is going to work. Between /indie/ (which includes /misc/)and /emugen/ most of the games to be discussed here already have a home. Maybe on a slower board there would be room for discussing games in this specific context, but with the never ending gacha shit it we would be on permanent life-support.

The current official game doesn't support custom charts iirc. But the 3DS version had a modding scene and allowed for custom charts to be injected. But yeah currently people just use simulators
