I assume you mean specifically the simulated Twilight Town from the beginning of KH2, I'd be more inclined to agree if Headspace took more cues directly from Faraway Town but Sunny's "false life" in Headspace is pretty much self-imposed and more of an escape from reality than an attempt to recreate it.

I've seen it often argued that he has borderline personality disorder, and apparently more than half of cases engage in self-harm, so go figure. However, from what I understand, most of the evidence for him having BPD comes from time after the roping incident.

In fact, I would say it’s more unbelievable that a jump rope was able to hang the body and not snap than Basil knowing how to tie it.

Someone posted an infographic here once about a certain knot for tying a flower crown being similar to a noose, and given that Basil's equivalent to Red Hands in the Boss Rush is "Flower Crown" I'm pretty sure that's implied to be Omocat's explanation as well (there's even a part of the animation that isn't used where it goes from looking like vines to more like green ropes but I can't find it at the moment)

You have to remember that the game is entirely told from Sunny’s perspective. Could Basil have known how to tie a noose and been suffering from depression and Sunny not know about it? Absolutely. We already know that Basil has a hard time opening up about his feelings. We know that Basil’s parents weren’t around much, so maybe Basil felt alone and unable to speak to anyone about his feelings even as a child.
We also know Sunny entered an extremely traumatic state after killing Mari, so it would make sense that he doesn’t remember the specifics of what happened with the police or anything like that, I mean he was trying to forget anything related to the event after all.

I think some people are missing the point here. Basil was familiar enough with the concept of a hanging suicide that that idea was something that was even possible for his mind to pull out in the moment. It really doesn’t matter how Basil knew how to tie the knot, what matters is that Basil associated the knot with a suicide. If he just knew slip knots from bracelets and flower crowns, it would not have been possible for his mind to say, “right time to use that knot to hang Mari from a tree.” That’s the kind of idea that requires thought and consideration that Basil did not have time nor place of mind to do at the time of the incident.

I don’t think he was actively suicidal when the friend group was all together, but everything we know about him definitely doesn’t paint a good picture of what his life was like before meeting Aubrey and the rest. Obviously, Basil is a very strong character, as he never actually went through with it pre-canon, but I think people are coping when they try and say that him knowing how to tie knots explains his actions because it actually doesn’t.

I mean I would go even further and say that people get entirely too caught up in the specifics of Mari’s staged suicide. It doesn’t fucking matter how it happened, Omori isn’t supposed to be a realistic crime game. It’s an emotionally driven game, so really all that matters is that it DID happen. If your first thought after figuring out the truth is that it doesn’t make sense, then you missed the point of the game entirely.

The issue with this argument is that OMORI creates (or at least tries to create) a direct delineation between the fantastical dream world, where everything can happen, and the real world, which aims to be more grounded and believable than that. Through elements such as Sunny's stats being worse than Omori's, the scene with cutting Aubrey in the park and the real world's food restoring little to no health to the party, the game trains the player to expect the events in its "real world" to operate on a logic fairly close to that of our real world. Two 12-year-olds immediately deciding to cover up a murder instead of doing literally anything else (like, for example, calling 911) goes directly against this logic, regardless of any in-universe justifications the game might try to conjure - if you present the audience with a grounded setting, repeatedly affirm how grounded it is and then have something as outlandish as the cover-up happen, that is objectively bad writing.

Well...Basil's a very lonely kid. His parents basically didn't exist, all he really had was his grandma, and he didn't have friends before Aubrey introduced him to everyone. His issues got worse after Mari died, but that doesn't mean they couldn't have existed before then. Basil admits that he took photos of what he was most afraid to lose. After Sunny murdered Mari, he was probably afraid of losing him too once everyone learned what happened. So he did what he did to 'save' Sunny. This is my personal take on it, but Basil's dialogue seems to imply he couldn't rationalize what happened as an accident. Sunny killed Mari, but Sunny would never do something like that. In the moment he knew he needed to protect Sunny from what he did, and once it was all over he rationalized it as 'something else' that made Sunny kill Mari. Something else he needed to protect Sunny from.
