why are all the dark fortresses at the very top of the map? i spent like 80 turns just slogging through the bad guys factions (dark elves, other chaos, norsca) then when i get to kislev and the empire which is where i really want to be, there's like a handful of dark fortresses to take? then when i want to take their settlements i can only build a single building in it, making it incredibly easy for the enemy to just retake it. so i raze it, they still retake it. the fuck

If you think that's bad, in TWW1, you didn't have Dark Fortresses. You couldn't have any settlements as Chaos, you could only raze or sack them, which didn't do anything as the AI could resettle them faster you could raze them. Also you had almost zero replenishment and if you ever lost your army, you also lost all of your recruitment buildings you spend the entire campaign building up to, so even a single defeat could and would end your campaign.
In short, the game is poorly thought out and they've been trying to fix their old dumb mistakes for years while constantly making new, even dumber mistakes.

Going all in on the melee infantry aspect of the Dark Elves roster with Hellebron's buffs to Witch Elves/Sisters of Slaughter/Har Ganeth Executioners was a lot of fun for me.
It was a nice change from just lazily going with the usual Darkshard spam too.

Though for me, the skill queue mod is even too much of a bother. I use this instead which removes getting a point every level in favor of getting 5 skill points every 5 levels.
It makes finally getting those points and allocating them a lot more satisfying without the every single turn tedium of making completely inconsequential one point allocations.

You start in the thunderdome and have to murderfuck your way out of the hole. You have main roster sappers that let you autoresolve sieges instantly instead of needing to build siege equipment for several turns and you unlock the ability to give all your generals chariot mounts.

Comfy corner campaign where you slow-roll some weak enemies and then work your way up the rivers until you're unstoppable. You have special recruitment elite sappers but they cost gold upkeep. Your slave soldiers are the most cost-effective mainline infantry in the game as long as there's a slavemaster nearby to buff them.
Babylon is kind of shit because it's a single-settlement province and doesn't have enough building slots to make that make sense.
Adad is like playing an island campaign in an old TW game. You're basically never under threat and can just pick off enemies one by one at your leisure. There is no true island campaign because water in this game is just land but boring. Ninurta is pretty much the center of the map and can expand in any direction but you'll spend the first 50 turns fighting tooth and nail against all the assholes dogpiling you. Since there's no easy path to expand to the map's boundaries, you're going to be threatened on all sides for most of the game so it's probably the hardest major faction.

I did start Adad and it's kind of impressive how much of a steamroll it's been so far. I've already become King of the Universe and have secured the whole southern side of the Tigris/Euphrates delta.
Haven't useed Siluhlus though, the akkadian roster is just so incredible I haven't felt the need to build their recruitment building.

It's one of the classic good TW games so if you liked Medieval 2 you'll like it as well. It shares a lot of the same issues that M2 has.

The last good historical TW game. Significantly different from the classics so there will be a considerable learning curve. Generally regarded as the hardest or most punishing TW game. It runs like ass but there's some mods on the workshop that help optimize it.
After Attila CA just kind of settled into this model of shitting out an endless parade of Warhammer DLC and squeezing out a terrible historical side-game every once in a while. I don't think any of those are worth playing.

There is not and they made it intentionally confusing.
If you own TWW 1 and or 2, you can play those factions on the big map for 3 and basically can buy any of the DLC piece meal and use it in the TWW3 map. If you own just TWW1 you can innately play the TWW1 factions on the big combined map but you could buy Thrones of Decay and suddenly you can play as the Tamurkhan Nurgle faction despite not owning them by owning TWW3.

Bretonnia and the empire have the most familiar play styles for anyone coming from a classic total war game.
They rely almost entirely on traditional cavalry, infantry and artillery, but their melee infantry is relatively poor compared to other factions and is mostly just there to hold the line for powerful cavalry or ranged units to do work.
The bretonnian king louen leoncoeur or fay enchantress have less hostile starting positions than other bretonnian or empire lords and the bretonnian cavalry focus is easier to use than the empire's focus on artillery and ranged infantry.

Three game combo on sale is your best bang for your buck. Chaos Dwarfs are a solid DLC faction, but the other two, beastmen and wood elves are better to get in their respective lord packs(silence&fury/twisted&twilight) than their expensive faction DLC. DLCs for WH3 I recommend chaos dwarfs and Elspeth von Draken (Wissenland & Nuln) if you like gun infantry, Malakai (innovators) is more artillery/vehicle oriented (cheese mostly)
Ikit Claw (rats with radioactive guns, mustard gas and nukes) can also be fun once you figure out the quirks of the game
Always check the terrain if your units have line of sight to fire, or else you'll lose hair, and by that I mean zoom in and literally check the POV of your infantry line

Imrik is rough. But for the early game, you need to rely on standard archers and spears because they held up pretty well until the late game, also get yourself a mage ASAP (lore of life for healing or lore of fire/shadow for damage). 3 units of bolt throwers are nice to have and helves cavs are mid, so can use the chariots as flankers instead before phase them out as you get more monsters (dragons, elemental, etc). And also, prioritize income first over growth in your initial province, for leveling Imrik go for the red lines first for basic army bonus, then focus on his unique lines once you unlock it. Imrik is pretty strong and if you leveled him up correctly, he can be a 1 man army.

This is a noob trap btw. Rangers is the way to go with Imrik. Rats and Chorf nukes will annihilate your stationary army. Rangers has anti-infantry, physical res(20%) and loose formation. Get 10 of them + 2(more) archers and you are good to go.

Is it possible to just outgrow total war entirely? I've been playing the series since Rome 1, skipping a couple titles here and there with Warhammer pulling me back in after giving up on all post Attila titles. I keep chasing this -idea- of fun rather than having fun but can't find it in me to just uninstall shit (partly cause some of the mods I have are gone-gone and if I delete my files I lose it for good).

It's always the same repetitive shit, there's some exciting early game stuff but then it just becomes a fucking slog around the mid game. Total Warhammer only makes it worse too because of how ungodly overpowered characters are but any mod that nukes them fucks the AI over even harder than you as they already can't use their characters worth shit and yolo wizards into melee.

AI is pretty damn similar even going back to Rome 1 which might be the rub, as even on high AI difficulty, the actual difficulty doesn't manifest, it needs state buffs/campaign buffs to even put up a fight, and that just makes the game fucking miserable (wtf is even the point of difficulty settings that make melee with anything but characters a horrible idea and incentivize range spam?). I'll take more losses in R1, M2, etc but the tactical play is just absent.
Just take charge bating for example to pull units out of formation. They ALWAYS fall for it, and because TW has never changed its fuck stupid movement system where everyone can just turn on a dime instead of there being proper formations (and no R1 or M2 "formations" ain't it), charge in, and murder the unit with its CB, crack the morale and rout.
Doesn't help either that all footage of Medieval 3 seems to have missed the whole issue with the games in the first place. Maybe I should just pick up Strategos.

Balancing AI between fun and challenging is hard. Maybe CA manages to integrate chatgpt or something similar to to game and then you realize there is no fucking beating that.
Try to limit your ai abuse maybe? I stopped corner camping, started building more balanced armies etc. and current wh3 ai feels better for me.
Med3's biggest improments will be on the campaign map. Levies, mercs and loyalty etc. battles cannot change its spears front archers on the back since 3000 years.

I've started finally playing ironman mode recently with a big modlist and I've been having a lot of fun after being kinda burn out. I don't like Legendary difficulty because of battle realism but I find VH/VH with ironman enabled to be the sweet spot. My modlist is huge but here are the most important mods:

I especially love the last two. I prefer the tomb king style unit cap since it incentivizes you to build more military buildings instead of the same old economy building spam and gives you more reasons to recruit niche units that you probably wouldn't recruit otherwise, although it does fuck a bit with AI army composition because of the limited unit recruitment. Longer battles is also great, makes battles more fun in general while also slowing down the rate at which you can just delete a unit with an overpowered spell or other unit. Be aware though that it fucks up a bit with balance especially winds of magic reserves but it kinda makes up for it by making spells less overpowered.

TWW3 is sloppy seconds/beta test for 40k
The reason why sieges were overhauled into massive cities with controllable areas and build-able buildings in real time is because of 40k. It doesn't make sense to build a tower in real time in Fantasy during battle.
But it does make sense to drop down a bunker/sentry gun from orbit in 40k. https://youtu.be/ozvSrtwYKWQ?si=12iHPtTjIGnot8Fu&t=16 It's a mechanic backported from TW:40K and will work this same way in it. Just like many other features which were blatantly made for TW:40K and just put into TWW3 to double dip on them/test them.
Like entire Domination game mode/Survival Battles. Orks in TW:40k will constantly, endlessly pour into the battlefield from map corners just like Daemons do in Survival Battles. As such battles will be bigger and you will see far bigger number of dead in post battle reports, just like you do in Survival battles. And so in order to win a battle, which is just a flashpoint of entire battlefront, you will have to achieve some objective like capturing area (again, just like in Survival Battles) or executing some Boss or activating some defenses or destroying some building etc.
In TWW3 they made some weird unimmersive portals so you can spawn out of nowhere kislevites/chinks out of it when invading Realms of Chaos. None of this makes ANY sense AT ALL in Fantasy. Because it isn't a mechanic designed for TW:W. However in TW:40K you have your ship(s) in orbit and a total amount of units you can station in orbit and then drop them down during battle. If you deploy all your units from orbit, you obviously won't have them in orbit for a next battle this turn. You can even see Requisition-like resource in this screenshot, most likely being a deployment limit.

TW games never had base building in the traditional RTS sense
What's you'll get is regions inside planets that have like 6-8 building slots and smaller regions with like 2-4 building slots
Not sure how TW40k will handle economy since shekels aren't a thing in 40k and all factions don't really use shekels at all, all costs associated in arms, supplies and munition production are all handwaved

This, but also remember you should be constantly expanding, so there are extremely few true "border settlements" where walls are absolute priority. Similarly your first province is likely the first to hit t4/5, so thats going to be your main recruitment center for like 50 turns.
So in general: build money growth walls. Trade resource replaces growth if one exists. Thats it.

No, it's because the number 1 piece of feedback they kept getting ubiquitously across the community is that the best sieges in the franchise were in Attila and they should just go back and copy that homework.
Attila had capture zones because it was building off of Rome 2, and Rome 2 had capture zones to serve as pathfinding targets for its underbaked AI. They're a vestigial mechanic in WH3 but were returned purely because older better games had them and everyone was shouting at CA to copy their older better games.

This was a retarded idea but it was just tower defense brainrot. Most of CA's designers at the time only had experience with mobile games so tower defense was just familiar ground for them. When reviving barricade code (something done explicitly to follow Attila's example) they realized they could make various defenses buildable and decided to try and make sieges more tower defense-like.

It does not take a serious amount of effort to set an arbitrary spawn point on the map. It's a trivial function in any gamedev software. Realms of Chaos doesn't make any sense because it was a piece of garbage made my clueless incompetents who all got laid off after the Hyenas fiasco.
Never attribute to future development planning what can just as easily be accounted for with incompetence. 40k probably wasn't even greenlit when Realms of Chaos was under development.
