I think he was genuinely interested in this game the last time he was on the grind. Then he ran into the wall of players who kill him in 3 combos because they actually cared to learn the game. When he first started playing he thought that the game wasn't deep at all, and everything was just an execution barrier. So, modern would be the key, since it skipped all that. But of course, even modern players need to move past auto combos and learn some footsies. Once he realized that he couldn't get any better without actually learning new things he gave up.

I started fighting games with umvc3 and sf4. I have followed tournaments for many games, and I am just saying what I have seen. Dbfz was GO1 and a few other established FG players winning everything, then it kinda died and french dudes and hikari started winning everything. Somehow that game had hyper consistent results, that is just data. Tekken, even tekken 8, has consistent results for the most part, at least in tournaments where koreans and pakis show up. Smash has a lot of new blood, but the young jappas are pretty dominant.
It's just data. Objectively SF6, strive, and SFV have the most random results. Sf6 and V have the biggest competitive playerbase, but still I don't think that explains everything.

Ok cotw is not the best example. But smash ult was the biggest fighting game and mkleo was sweeping tournaments. Now it's jappas and a few others, and the best players almost always make top 8. Tekken 8 literally looks like a mash fest to me with constant pointblank mix into 50%, yet somehow Atif Butt gets top 3 every tournament, and the Koreans and pakis fill the top 8s every time. You rarely see huge upsets unless it's some washed korean boomer which barely counts

Sfv introduced the height minimum for cammys divekick. Sf4 let you divekick instantly. That change alone is a far greater flaw than every single point you mentioned there combined. I never understood why a 10 frame delay on my most important move is somehow okay with everyone but 8 frame delay (which is less time) on inputs somehow was the thing everyone complained about. Like okay, so if extreme input delay exists for cammy then its fine but if it has the chance to effect a shoto then its suddenly a major problem and needs to change. It's a solved game you block until they do something unsafe and then you rape their hp bar and go back to blocking and wait for them to do it again. There's no depth and no skill press first and lose.
