The only thing I've ever seen anyone do with hunter ranger is a STR build that used the sword of chaos and the healing necklace to run up to groups of enemies and do the whirlwind attack to gain life and tank damage. It's a fine build but situational and doesn't do the thing until act 3.

Hunter Ranger does get Volley which is legit one of the best abilities in the game. AoE attack that applies all your damage riders to each enemy in the AoE. But again it only comes online in Act 3 because they get it at level 11.

Yet I have mixed feelings about handing over this dude to the Waveservants for a good old fashioned eye-for-an-eye. Yes, I realize he's not a saint and I his read journal and notes. I'm not talking about the usual circles here. Pic rel was my first convo with him. He spilled the beans without any pressure, get us to the place without the promise of protection, didn't flinch when Gortash threatened us nor when the detonations happened and actually waited for us while we were inside. Redhammer had multiple opportunities to fuck over our party big time yet he handled every challenge without a peep and turned out to be a vital part of our rescue mission.

I'm thinking about knocking the Waveservanst out with Non-Lethal attacks in the inevitable fight as a compromise. I don't give a damn about the quest rewards.

I ended up separating the question into two: I gave him up, as that's what we agreed in the temple; then attacked the waveservants with Non-Lethal attacks to give Redhammer a chance to get out of the city. Gortash dislikes loose ends after all and it was the priestess' leader who forced this into a "he or us" situation with the threat of deadly violence. Optimally I would've been able to finish the fight with all "mermaids" Knocked Out while keeping Redhammer from delivering the killing blow on any of them but shit happens. At least he will rest next to his beloved Cap instead at the depths of a cold cave after being waterboarded to death.

The funniest part of this was the rescued NPCs casually strolling all over the place (in real time) while you were stuck fighting Water Elements (in turn-based mode). Even better they were treated as allies who benefited from all your AoE healings and buffs despite not participating in the fight. I wonder if Ulder would've been treated the same way (remember, we had him as an attached follower before!) but he only emerged from Cap after we were finished. How convenient!

The swine cannot go two posts without being self-referential. I briefly considered answering that question as well. But animals are incapable of understanding characterization or character arcs. They see a similarity - both Lae'zel and Shadowheart renounce their goddesses, both Astarion and Karlach were slaves - and misidentify that as a "theme." But surface-level similarities or even shared traits are not automatically themes. You're not saying anything about trauma by giving every character a traumatic backstory.

I'm unsure about what's the best ending for Wyll. Leaving up to his own devices he chooses to be the Blade of Avernus. Which sounds a pretty idiotic without his Warlock powers. Throwing himself into an endless meat grinder until he gets overwhelmed? Maybe if he had some terminal illness and wanted to spent the rest of his life on a suicide mission it'd make sense. Speaking of which the only reason I'm considering this option is to have somebody accompany Karlach to the Hell. It's still a pretty idiotic move and I feel we just delaying the inevitable but it at least has an additional purpose now.

I'm not sure if there's a Persuasion check involved in convincing her to choose that route but if it does that adds some uncertainty to my low CHA Tav. Back to Wyll we also have the Mizora wanting to take revenge on the Grand Duke issue, so having the Blade nearby for practical and political reasons makes a lot of sense. Especially if you take into account how Gortash mass slaughtered the nobles who attended his coronation. I know he's not too fond of diplomacy but he has the necessary skills and pedigree for the job. Meanwhile the one above is the only ending I consider "good" for (non-romanced) K, so it's hard to decide what to do.

The issue with debating this is that Wyll never articulates any goals for himself, he's just there for others and his story reflects this.
Every other character at least has some goal they intent to achieve after completing the main quest, Wyll is just a blank slate going from quest to quest without personal drive.
So the entire decision just comes down what is good for others, and the choice there is clear
>keep the pact (dad remains alive and can help rebuild Baldur's Gate)
>go to hell with Karlach (making the choice to become duke irrelevant anyway)

You can argue about it if Karlach is either dead, you want to see her explode or become a squid but, then Wyll is free to become a Duke but with the pact intact, it's basically a ticking timebomb that needs to have a solid Plan B.
Breaking the pact, saving his dad and becoming Duke would be the best option, though that ending is pretty niche and also has Mizora actively seek revenge upon the Ravenguards.

To be fair, it's rather heavy-handed that every Origin companion has a complicated and often abusive relationship with an authority figure (often divine) who shaped their lives. It's not exactly an insightful observation to make - even the average redditor can make a Venn diagram about it. But once again, a repeated motif is not automatically a theme. You're not saying anything meaningful about religion or faith just by having Lae'zel, Shadowheart, Minthara, and the Dark Urge lose faith and outright renounce their gods. Motif is observable. Theme (meaning) is interpretative. A story means something to the average person. The swine suggests that Astarion was tortured for the better part of two hundred years only because his writer must have a bad relationship with his dad. That's the extent of its "intellect."

That's the danger in trying to equate characters and companions simply because they share a similar character arc. Lae'zel is not Shadowheart is not Minthara is not the Dark Urge. Any attempt to flatten these characters and put them all into a tiny box is misguided at best, and entirely stupid at worst. But nuance in characterization doesn't get award ceremonies, so the swine was never told it's there. At least it can post its favorite track.

I just learned that if you polymorph someone, you can Power Word: Kill them and they actually do die.
Also, breaking a poly counts as a kill, so it triggers Durge's cloak. So sorc Durge can really break the game.

All things considered I still think this the best option despite Mizora's plotting. Wyll's original contract uses his dad and only him as collateral. I feel if you asked the Grand Duke to choose between relinquishing his life and Wyll's eternal servitude to the Hells he wouldn't hesitate to pick the former. Not just because Ulder comes across as the hero type or that as a life-long soldier he must've made peace with these thoughts long time ago. From a practical perspective he can just continue to live his life and dodge assassination attempts probably the same way he always did as the pact doesn't have an active deadline. As long as he "dies by an enemy's hand" the condition is fulfilled.

All in all I'm afraid I have to resolve this by applying real life pragmatism to the situation: which endings will leave my hands untied for future playthroughs? I can stomach Karlach blowing up much better than her mind-flayer ending (I didn't plan to bring her to the final fight anyway...) and her third option is probably best utilized if you romanced her. Wyll's default ending also synergies well with this if you don't mind a third wheel. Or if you romance her with Wyll as an origin character. So unless some new discovery turns everything upside down I'm going to go with Grand Duke Wyll and overheating Karlach. Thanks for the input!

Is there a mod that lets you backtrack dialogue choices so you can explore different options without reloading? Some conversations require very specific circumstances and it's a waste not to explore them fully, but all the loading screens make me want to kill myself.
