Proggy.
Added a new weapon(s): The crossbow dualies.
Has double the fire rate of the bow but half the damage and projectile speed.
I also replaced the water textures and added distortion to the shader so it looks more natural.

Added charging animation for when you charge the ball into a power ball.
There's a flash when you charge the ball so I thought I was going to have to add a bunch of new particle for the different power ball types, but I realised the hit flash was exactly what I wanted so I can just reuse that.

Anyone else that only has an hour per day to dev? How do you make it work?
I always spend like 10 minutes remembering what I was trying to do, 40 minutes trying to implement something and then the last 10 I realize it doesn't work and I revert back to the last working build

what devs think gamers should want: a game you just make, without overthinking, without being a perfectionist, scoped with limited content, with a practical art style
what gamers really want: a game that is perfect, well thought-through, with tons of content, with high detail photorealistic 3D models

balatro normalized glorifying slop
"hehe it makes me addicted, this means it's really good"
"the dev really spent a lot of effort making it stimulating with ui effects etc. this means it's really good because it makes me addicted hehe"
telling me that i'm too much of a boomer to enjoy it, is like telling me i'm too much of a boomer to enjoy heroin.
somehow people started making brainrot sound like a good thing. i mean gambling is literally the most soulless way of gamedesign possible.
this all wouldn't bother me so much if it wouldn't cause all gamedevs trying to make slop now too. as if it's some sort of trend to make the sloppiest slop possible. i'm not the target audience for equivalent of heroin.
worst thing is those heroin junkies think it's me having a problem. they look at me with their crack eyes and rotten teeth and think it's my problem for not enjoying life in their sloppy dopamine world they created.

i thought about it a lot and probably the happiest people in the world are the ones who can enjoy doing the same thing over and over again. they enjoy their wife every day, they enjoy the same video game every day, the same food every day, the same work every day, the same project they work on every day.
they never get into this fucked up mental state of waiting for something new to happen. they never depend on someone revolutionizing anything. they never depend on someone improving anything. they just found what they enjoy and keep enjoying it over and over again.

After every cultural push, a counter-cultural push follows.
People today look at Dark Souls and say "well actually it's not that hard of a game I dunno what the big deal was with it" but the reason it exploded in popularity in the early 2010's is because at the time the industry was turning EXTREMELY casual. There was this saying going around treated as universal truth by game designers "if the player sees a game over screen that's the developer's fault". It was a time when "infinite regenerating health" became the norm for FPS games, action games became God of War-likes with "spam square to win", tutorials and handholding out of the ass for every little thing, etc. Some players were of course getting frustrated, and then Dark Souls came (well Demon Souls first but it wasn't even sold in the west initially) whose gameplay was really reminiscent of the old, harsh and unforgiving games from back in the day, that punished the player severely and didn't hold their hand. And of course people loved it, because they were sick and tired of all the casual garbage dumped by the industry at the time. Which is why ironically if a game like Dark Souls was released 10 years earlier (with graphics matching that time period) it probably wouldn't have become so popular, because people the people of those times were already used to difficult games.
In the same vein, people will get sick of gamblingcore games eventually, the question is: when that time comes will you be ready to capitalize on the opportunity and offer them an escape from that?

i feel like old mmorpgs and even stuff like pokemon basically taught you how to become successful in life. it taught you all the basic lessons:
a) only pick enemies at your level to level up, if you pick enemies to hard for you you just die and even lose experience points (yes old mmorpgs make you lose xp on death) -> only work on stuff that is at your skill level or you make no progress
b) grind (thats how work works) -> do the same stuff over and over to get big
c) find a guild to powerlevel you (nepotism is key to success) -> getting help from higher level people levels you up way faster
d) work in a team to achieve things you can't achieve alone -> work in a team
e) pick a role and stick with it (healer, mage, tank etc.) -> pick a skill and master it, work together with people who master other skills
f) follow a linear progression instead of just aimlessly wandering around the world -> similar to picking goals at your skill level and not jumping ahead - also not overcomplicating it

Had Dark Souls come out in early 2000s it would have been incredibly mid and likely very jank. If you've played Blade of Darkness or Enclave or other games like that from that era you know how jank they are. I mean souls has a fair bit of jank even as they are but they would have been quite a lot worse had they released earlier. I can see it having a dedicated audience but it would have been niche sort of like the Kings Field series and spinoffs are.

>Gambling is le bad
Gambling is just a reward mechanims in the toolbox of game design.
Claiming that skinner boxes and dice roll slop is bad, is like claiming that sugar and shit like honey should be banned from cooking recipes, because le american food is garbage with chemical sugar.
Shit like random damage rpg numbers, criticals, a chest giving a random unique giant sword, or a special that deals a huge damage randomly are part of what makes games great.

>Claiming that skinner boxes and dice roll slop is bad
Skinner box is by definition bad, at least the conventional used meaning by people. It is the "eating sugar by the spoonful straight from the jar" of your food analogy. As opposed to say making a carrot cake with a lot of fiber that's slower to digest and doesn't instantly trigger insulin and dopamine receptors in your mouth like plain sugar does.
>>
>>
one thing that fascinates me about trend-chasing is how close-minded it makes people. it turns a world of infinite possibilities into a finite one. and "finite" isn't even the right word, it's "singular".
it narrows down the space of possibilities to one idea only.
you could argue that it makes you completely blind.

you're so hopeful that the pendulum will swing back but if you actually zoom out, and look at gaming trends in general, you'll see that the casualisation of the 2000s-2010s has only progressed further into the slopification of today.
you're forgetting that at least 2 generations have now been raised on shitty mobile slop games and roblox who think that skinner box design, microtransactions and gamba are perfectly fine and are now buying games.
we literally have one of those retards in this very thread.
if you want an analogy, look at television i suppose. it effectively killed reading, and while critical circles of television did appear, the concept itself of "rotting infront of the telly" did not disappear, it metamorphosed into something more horrid which is doomscrolling on tiktok.

Cheating makes you more goal oriented and gives you a taste of what ambition can give you, lying teaches you theory of mind because you must assume someone else's perspective to know what you must lie about to get away with it. Failing to get away with it teaches you the consequences and makes you more socially aware.

I'm going to take a 3 day break from anything compute related then come back and try to remake my gameplay loop from scratch while keeping the same assets and UI elements which I'm not going to waste my fucking time on again.

I am extending Node so I should have Position and Scale available but I don't. Looking at the definition of Node in the SDK does not show the properties either but all the tutorials I look at does it this way.
I believe the problem is the SDK setup, because that shit just seems error prone to me. I got VSCodium running and installed the C# Tools For Godot extension, but VSCodium does not recognize properties of Godot objects, neither by intellisense or when I try to play from the Godot editor.
I'm stumped

Helped a neighbor clean out their garage and got some delicious chocolate cake. Made coffee to provide a nice bitter contrast to the cake's sweetness.
140 days left, I owe 5 full days of work to my game. Spent the entire day yesterday making glacial progress on a UI element but it's almost done. Today I have to recreate my project for reasons, which is another one of those things that makes games take such a long time to make. I'm at 1100 hours in so far on this one and it's a sequel to one of my previous games and shares a lot of its code and assets. Things are not going well...

Modern FPS gamers have a huge expectation to be able to customize their weapons and that doesn't really work in historical settings. It is also really easy to find assets for modern era if you're going realistic art.

so i was wondering what's a practical yet technical stack for modern game dev, that's all, and since this result seems very interesting i figure this guy has it figured out

on a platform with 140 million monthly active users, selling 100k copies is not a hit. and no, it doesn't say anything about what gamers want. there's still 140 million people who do NOT want that type of game.
"so why are those the only games that are bought?" -> easy to answer: because there is nothing else being released. so they just play the old games they always play.

seeing thomas brush talking to jeff vogel makes me almost angry. constantly trying to push the idea that gamers want dumb short games. constantly obsessing over money. it's almost like trying to peer pressure jeff into doing less work and producing more slop because the indie sloppers all agreed to feeding slop because its easier to make money doing that. this whole anti-work ethic, this whole anti-intelligence ethic, anti-effort, anti-value. i get where its coming from. but man something about it rubs me the wrong way. it's like believing you have to be a shit developer making shit and making sure its as shit as possible. and then wondering why your game doesn't sell lmao.
i'd sell it's well deserved. if you glorify being a shit developer, then have fun getting filtered by the market.
and constantly referring to balatro and schedule 1 (games that actually took 2+ years of honest effort), wont change the fact that the other 100k slop titles all fail with that mindset.
what a shit culture those youtube devs created...

Your engine almost certainly has a way for you to add invisible occluders for culling purposes if that's what you're going for. If you mean occlude as in clipping, then I think you're wanting the stencil buffer, not the depth buffer.

imagine 90% of the playerbase buying that game because of this specific effect. "others seem to like it, so it must be good, right?".
same reason we listen to shit music because its popular, but would never search and buy that slop on our own.
zomboid is a good example of a game that blew up when the peer pressure kicked in. the game was good before too, but when people saw its popular the herd mentality kicks in.

Unpleasant TRVKE: A Melvor Idle-like isn't as simple to make as the nodevs here want to believe. Rocky Idle took 2.5+ years to make. Melvor Idle 2 was announced over a year ago (in development for much longer) and that hasn't released yet either. I tried to make one last year and got burnt out pretty quick. It's still an RPG with a metric fuckton of complex systems that require building.

Checking the thread we had... 4 progress posts, all in the first 20 messages, then schizo shit allllllll the way down and not a single game in sight. DD is in two weeks and nobody talks about it.

nta but I think the story is that rats/mice will drown within 10 minutes if put in a tube of water but if the scientist intervenes and saves them once and puts them back they'll tread water for hours in hopes of being saved again. not sure how it's relevant here but it is an interesting study if not cruel.
>>
>>563758519
It was a Harvard study, they'd put rats in a glass of water and after 15min the rat would just sink to the bottom and attempt to drown themselves, but as soon as they sank to the bottom they'd lift them out and dry them. Then they'd put them back a second time, after learning that they would be rescued they continued paddling for 60h instead of 15min.

Open stance walk animations always look a bit jank even when the pros do it, but I'll try to improve it at some point.
Also there's no fast walk, but that animation just makes it look a bit faster. There's a dash button though so not a lot of walking unless you want to just look at the animations.

Yes I remember telling you faggots that Early Access got nerfed hard so it doesn't get any visibility nowadays and it will sell a lot more once they officially release it.
It's the main reason behind half of AGDG's flops, they released their games as Early Access with no marketing budget to "test the waters" but that's not something that works anymore. You either commit to release or nothing.

if you could predict the trend of any stock correctly at least 60% of the time, you could be a millionaire in 2 years and a billionaire in 10 years.

Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)
Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."
Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

Personally I say it does, because when your game is set to release from EA, it doesn't appear in the "upcoming new releases next month!" page which is what gave me a lot of wishlists and eyes on my project actually.
I've seen people claim that "by the numbers, your game technically gets shown to more people if you do EA launch and then normal launch" but what those people fail to account for is "wishlist/purchase velocity". You might get slightly more views but they're spread out more, whereas with a single launch they're bundled together in a shorter timespan, so the algorithm boosts you harder.
At the end of the day this might just be counting pennies though, because BfF still managed to sell well once it was released. Just have a good game, and don't do what some aggy devs did with releasing early access games with no plans to finish. Guns and Nun is a better project than Dungeon Watchers from that point of view.

Programming has a shitton of room for error. Theoretically, your entire game can be made out of just a giant list of statements within a single file. Additional layers of abstraction on top of that simply make the code more manageable, understandable, maintainable, and scalable.

May as well rebrand an early access game and skip straight to full release. Useful in cases where my game might look like it's NGMI, it'll at least let me judge sentiment and then I come as a dev that really want's to make the game great beyond release, despite it really being a bare bones version.

Not really. We're all ECE/CS graduates. I can do all of the gamedev tasks, but they're all code mains with little to no skill in the art-adjacent ones. You have to be able to do all of it at some level.
What you need is to get better at scoping. I couldn't make a character action game in a short time either, especially not with custom animations. For stuff like my 3D prototypes that included characters, I just used an off-the-shelf mannequin and the animation libraries that I've previously linked for you (mixamo and quaterius).

For a 48-72 hour game jam, I would exclude

Settings + pause menu would just be volume controls and maybe a fullscreen toggle.
If I'm by myself, I just do asset packs or programmer art. If I have an art or music guy, I'd still prototype with asset packs and then tell them to replace those as they finish their stuff.

On the surface, it's a hierarchical state machine, but when you add stupid little hidden states like `isAttacking` and `inCombo` and coroutines like attackRoutine, you lose all the predictability and stability that you want out of a state machine. Those should all be their own states. In your switch block starting at line 147, you should be setting every one of those variables you're setting to something, even if you think it's irrelevant. That's a part of maintaining predictability.
Instead of writing this all out in your own hacky code, why not use a premade system? Have you tried this? https://docs.unity3d.com/Packages/com.unity.behavior@1.0/manual/index. html
