Skill issue aside, the biggest thing for me was being gated by power level. You can clear the bare minimum if you invest heavily in your DPS which includes making sure you have maxed out ancient marks (which doesn't have to be optimal), weapons, etc. You can also carefully prioritize skills in your supports and/or breakers but I personally just invest into everything if possible.

Zero is my favorite character and part of this game. So many other characters are personality vacuums. The moment Enki showed up I started skipped cutscenes. New Heavenly Mandate

No more Chinkslop allowed in Gachas. It was genuinely cool and exciting when I visited Liyue in Genshin because the ost was kino and it was the first game I played that explored such a region. In hindsight: it was carried by the novelty of its newness and the ost. It was boring as fuck with lots glazing over how great China is, people talking about nothing of importance (common for gachas), and Zhongli being an autistic jew. There was no Wuxia kino. It's boring, mundane bullshit and every Chinese gacha thinks it's a good idea to implement.

I was playing through and reading/enjoying the story all the way up until I think it was the end of 1.0? It was the part we were going through china and fucking around with the sprinklers to stop the jade disease thing.
Then chapter 6 and 7 I kind of just blasted through while skipping because I really wanted the puppet girl's sig before the vulcan event went away.

It sounds like the new 1.2 stuff will be a fresh slate in a new era/location.

Yeah I kinda faded the back half of 1.0 and the entirety of 1.1. There might be some worthwhile moments but overall it did not interest me. Gacha writing tends to be shit and hearing someone talk like a country bumpkin while trying to do repairs didn't give me much confidence. Going to go into 1.2 with a clean slate.

What went so wrong?

There are parts of Black Beacon that are very nice. But there are others that are either ineffectual (copy-paste bullshit from other gachas) or downright abysmal that drag down the entire experience. Lack of a PC client and CN trying to kek global spiraling into a bad reputation are the main culprits. Not translating shit and not including JP voice acting for any of the newer characters only caused unrest.

If they tried to be more of their own thing instead of copying others I think the game would have found more success. The stage design and the template for content is stale. It should have been a Diablo gacha.
