Trying the Light Platinum demo after playing so many Gen 3 hacks really makes you appreciate the power of the DS.
Music sounds nicer, cutscenes, the visuals are nicer obviously, it's so comfy that I don't care it's all in Spanish.

Yeah, it's 2 roms that I'm supposed to swap out like I'm changing dicks in FF7. Honestly, IDK why. My best guess is maybe the map is too big or there are a fuck ton of events. Either way, I'll find out whenever I get there.

What's the best DS emulator for replicating how the original console graphics look?
On MelonDS it seems like System is the best but it still doesn't have the LCD lines which I think would look nice, not sure how to enable those or if I can.

For a little while now I've been using the lcd1x filter on Drastic and appreciate the more faithful aesthetic.

>Is there a way to remove the tweening sprites in BW2?
Yes. Is there a patch or program that does it for you automatically? Probably not.
> I'm kinda curious how much that would reduce file size
Just extract the sprites from both BW2 and BW1 and compare their filesizes.

Does this one feature any weird/unusual mechanics like Spades/Clubs? For example there's this mechanic where if you grind too much enemy trainers (gym leaders included) will start to become harder, and no one's really figured out the specifics of it AFAIK

I want to make a Red & Blue rom but with gen 4 assets. Is this unoriginal and cliche and been done a million times?

I think emerald is the better base in general because it has a larger community and the game runs on a less limited platform, both of which make development easier. Crystal is a better option if you want the gen 2 aesthetic or want to utilize the game's existing content.

Altered Platinum, a Renegade Platinum derivative with a bunch of custom "Sinnohan" forms (most are pretty cool and fun to use) and custom shinies. Adds some later gen moves and buffs others as well.

>Gen 4 hacking is a blind spot for me
it's a blind spot for the whole community, DS hacking doesn't have 10% of the tools GBA hacking does and the increased complexity of larger sprites and 3D models will pretty much always guarantee that it will be less accessible than GBA.
Real DS hacks have started cropping up but it's likely that the scene will never balloon to the same level of GBA.
The OP is Light Platinum DS, it's a demo and I'm still playing through it but it's been really blowing me away so far, it does a suberb job at replicating the charm of Gen 4 while also injecting a lot of new ideas that make it feel exciting. It's just this perfect blend between nostalgic and exciting, mostly bc of the great new music tracks, the well done custom assets, and a really high level of polish on everything, it's a remake of the GBA hack of the same name but reworked heavily to iron out that games flaws, notably the shitty writing.

You can if you reduce each to 2 colors (actually 4 but you need black and white) and resize them, but it'll look awful. May anon means a Kanto game by "gen 1" in whicg case gen 3 FRLG. Doable but sounds boring.

Thread is made. Now I wait for it to be made public.
Not sure why, but my anxiety is really high. Maybe it's excitement because I've finally made it to this part, or maybe it's fear of rejection. I doubt it's because of the end of my anonymity since I did kinda dox myself a while back.
Either way, thank you /rheg/ for the help and support that I needed.

maybe? a source code is not a get out of jail free card from doing the work that a DS rom hack would entail but I'm sure it makes things easier in some ways, and we have seen some projects coming so, maybe things are progressing.

>newer releases means new pokemon/variations
I guess I dont need every single pokemon in the game as I'd only be using the tera mechanic but it kills my enthusiasm to get back into it every single time
>>
>>58894746
there's no rules to this anon, in fact I prefer a tighter, more limiting dex compared to one that crams in as much shit as possible.
Focus on making what you want first, whatever feels right, and then when you have your "sketch" you can begin thinking about the bigger picture shit.
>>
>>
>>58894746
Look at Pokemon Lazarus for an example. It kept to 400+ish mon and it kinda feels a bit cramped (could just be the smaller routes and map).
I want a romhack to have an in between where the first 3-4 routes aren't just your average normalslop mon like Sentret/Rattata/Pidgey/Hoothoot with like 1 extra added in every route, but also not every new route has a brand new set of 10+ pokemon. I think a romhack with around 200-300 hand picked fun pokemon would be cool.

>What's the difference
Really shit, the hardest hacks are all pretty bs in some ways. Unbound and the gym gimmicks, Emerald Kaizo and the weather abuse/movepool limitations, Meteor Saga and the fucked up level curve.
I guess the A.I is too exploitable otherwise.
>>

>>58895301
cheap all the way
there was an entire discussion last thread (probably that one) going over a small sample of the bullshit it throws at you
if you removed the field effects and special boss mechanics the game would be a near complete pushover (in terms of battling, not puzzles or having the mental fortitude to get through the badly written slog of a story)
though without the fieldshit and bossfightshit there's still the input reading AI and the developer being stingy (or at least incredibly inconsistent) with good mons and mega evolution access (you don't get it until after the 14th badge; you start fighting mega equivalents/box legendaries after the sixth badge i think)

It is very polished on the surface, great sprites, UI and music, but everything else is very lacking. Dialogue is even more dull than GameFreak's somehow, and after just beating the second gym there has been absolutely nothing happening with no goal at all. To make the comparison with the gen it is hacking, in RSE you always move forward with a goal in mind: you first go see your dad, then you go to beat the first gym, then you have to save Peeko, then you need to deliver the letter to Steven in Dewford, then to the shipyard in Slateport, then you hear the evil team is heading to Mt Chimney, etc. Outside of the gym challenge you always have a clear idea on what your next plan is. In Lime I just beat the second gym and there is still nothing going on, just moving from one gym to the next for no reason other than "gotta do gyms I guess". Similarly, the region doesn't feel well thought out, simply serving basic functions of "this one has the trainer school, this one has the second gym" etc, but have zero flavor. The second gym town is rainy, and 90% of all the NPC dialogue in the city is some variation of "boy, this weather, huh". But what is the purpose of this city in the grand scheme of things? In RSE every city has a clear place in the region completely seperate from its gameplay function, which I don't feel at all here.

>It is very polished on the surface, great sprites, UI and music, but everything else is very lacking
that's GF wannabe/formula worshipping hacks for you
all presentation, no attempts to be different in story nor gameplay

After Odyssey and Emerald Rogue I wish every romhack had a double battles only option. Double battles are fun as fuck and have way more options for team building. Single battles feel so stale in comparison once you've had a game entirely doubles.

Just a bunch of little things I noticed
>exp all that breaks the level curve
>very easy in general
>gym leaders are all in stadiums
>gym badges don't have dedicated names anymore
>new pokemon are all blobby with too much emphasis on cutemons
>overuse of NPC roadblocks
>etc.
Don't get me wrong, there were some things I liked. The game is very polished and feels professionally made. Just felt like some of the creative decisions were trying to copy Gamefreak in a bad way.
>>58895764
Yeah the music is good and the tiles look nice, but the cities have been pretty dull so far. I also didn't really care for Team Horizon or whatever they're called. The designs looked boring and not very threatening (it's the lavender lol). I didn't really get a feel for what they're all about either. I thought, maybe they use Fairy types, but then one of them had a whole team of Dark types so idk. Might be too early to say though. I'm also still around the second gym.

I downloaded some HeartGold Touhoumon ROM hack, and they made all the basic "pokemon" have like Stage 2 stats but with dogshit moves and the EXP curves are all slow or some shit like everyone's a legendary. A level 10 vs a level 10 is like an 8 turn ordeal because damage is so low. What the fuck lol

Alright, final update.
https://www.pokecommunity.com/threads/pok%C3%A9mon-project-post-game.5 40711/
Surprisingly, the thread was approved quickly. Over 60 downloads, no comments yet, but either people will take an interest, or they won't. Worst case, I just retreat and work on the dark build instead.
I'll be back if/when I make the first major update. A minimum of 80 more trainers seems needed to justify a post about it.
Thanks.

I think scarlet/violet hit the nail on the head with 400 species on release. Both posts make good points, perhaps i should just pick back up on the project.

I'm guessing the development cycle should look something like
>map first
>then wild mons
>start placing npcs/main quest
>as everything falls into place start placing side quests
Ive already got a bunch of the concepts down like gyms/elite4/champ/available legendaries/rough story outlined its just that starting and keeping going are the biggest hurdles.

For anyone familiar with Porymap, am I able to easily delete the emerald/firered maps and keep the custom ones? I noticed they have numerical ids and i'm hoping deleting 0.00 through 0.56 will shift everything back down to 0.00.
And if that isnt the case and I have to start a brand new project if its simple enough to carry over the maps to the new project. I see a 'duplicate map' option but Im figuring thats only local to the current project and wont necessarily duplicate the maps between projects.
>>
>>58897322
yeah i'd argue you should start bit by bit with your region, i think some people do all the towns first and then string them together with routes but it usually makes everything feel strangely decoupled, moving through the region in chunks and letting your route design/theme/climate bleed into your towns and vice versa sounds like a good idea

Well deleting all the maps had exactly the effect i thought it would have, everything is errored out. Trying to be lazy about it but I guess I could either move all the map files to a new project in file explorer or edit the map_groups.JSON file and remove all the references to all the deleted map files/folder. Maybe then it'll auto correct itself

Looks like editing the map_groups.JSON file worked. Too scared to actually delete the unused map files for now but that was my main hurdle; map bloat.
