>only difference (hidden ability) isn't even unique to each form
Is it just me or do alt forms feel like they are getting lazier with every passing gen?

gen 3 did it first

But those have different typings, movepools, and unique looking alternate forms. You can mention Basculin, but even BW gave them unique abilities. The better answer to this would be either Spinda (which is a joke in and of itself) or Gastrodon.

gamefreak has a bad habit of introducing a concept and then using it for something that should be an entirely separate concept. These should just be individual variation, and individual variation should exist for almost every single pokemon species. Slightly different patterns on fur for stuff like liepard, arcanine, incineroar. Scale and scute textures that vary for charizard or krookodile. Differing lengths of horns or whiskers for gyarados, dragonair, whiscash. Slight color variation so that your swampert is a lighter blue with redder cheeks than your friend's swampert who's almost navy blue with dark orange cheeks. And then, of course, more wild individual variations, with squawkabilly among many mons that simply come in multiple coat, plumage, or morph patterns. Arbok gets his variety of frills back. Weezing sometimes has the cross above his head. Ursaring could be blond or brown or black. Krabby and Clauncher could both be red or blue or white or yellow. Lillipup could have any color or fur length. Etc. Etc. These would be trivial to implement by the way, giving models different shape keys and blending between them or selecting from multiple options at random is supremely easy, and can be handled by the existing individual mon ID systems they already have.

if the mechanical differences between forms are so insignificant why even bother having them as separate forms in the first place (and not alternate skins like gastrodon/sawsbuck/vivillon/etc)

Moving to real-time battles really did help a lot for many Pokemon that people would normally never use.
It's a damn good thing too since the Speed stat is pretty much irrelevant in ZA so slower Pokemon can actually have some success for once.

Pumpkaboo's form gimmick became an individual variation, so the forms had to be renamed from Size to Variety. Good luck telling a large Small and a small Large apart now.

This shouldn't have been a form. Resolute Keldeo was already pushing it.

I like Alcremie's forms, but I don't like how they're determined upon evolution.

Any time i hear these motherfuckers cry they sound like yoshi, and i assume its a Nacli situation and completely intentional. They even have multiple color schemes like yoshis do
