I would say this shows they were going for a different kind of crowd, trying to have a strong niche fanbase instead of trying to fight for the general public.

Monster rancher was more part of the virtual pet fad that pokemon was only tangentially related to. Have you ever played one? It's a sim game with some light rpg mechanics, so really not at all like pokemon.

Either way, Suezo is a fucking weirdo in such a way that modern-day game companies would never dare to try. That's why he's great. Not better than Pikachu, because Pikachu is just objectively great character design, but there's a certain soul factor to Suezo that you just don't see these days.
