This. Decades is seeing game freak in action has shown me that unless the character you like was explicitly created to be shilled, like Charizard or a human equivalent. You DON’T want them to revisit your character. Game freak will fuck it up, best case they simply half-ass it, worst case your character under goes a humiliation ritual and is ruined forever. Might be a few different factors in place. The cons I've attended were either super small, or very generally focused on hobby stuff, so not just anime/manga/vidya but also comics/arts and crafts/other miscellaneous bullshit, and that might've resulted in the space Pokémon-related stuff got being comparatively small. I also live in a country where Pokémon is definitely still popular and widely played, but the "fandom" side seems to be small and not very focused on human characters. I honestly can't imagine any artist from here, no matter how dedicated, seeing any Pokémon character, no matter how popular, and going "merch of this will sell gang busters *here*" because most fans do only care about the Pokémon. I could say it might also be an issue with copyright, but I've seen random Pokémon genwunner merch or merch of other games/franchises I even got a plushie of a fappable Genshit boy, really, how rad would it be if one could buy a Kiki plushie irl outside Japan? being sold no problem.
