>Try to keep things /vr/ related: Focus should be on 6th Gen Consoles and older. Slight off topic is fine so long as it's related to CRTs, such as later 16:9 models, HD models, etc. Systems with backwards compatibility are also safe territory, as are re-releases on newer hardware. PC CRTs are also welcome and appreciated.
>Produce OC! Bust out your camera and take photos of your CRTs displaying all sorts of games, featuring all sorts of tubes, using all sorts of signals. Getting good shots can be hard, but if you take enough, at least a few will turn out alright.
>Try and give as much information as possible when asking for info on a specific set, or troubleshooting an issue to expedite and help you may receive. As always, Google is your friend and we are your friends with benefits. Do people read this? Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either; Seriously, there's literally 6 years of backlog at this point.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. Always remember to show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Limited discussion of video processing and scaling devices is alright, but remember to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories.

My CRT monitor’s base stand cracked. It still works but I’m scared to touch it now. Is it possible to repair this?
>>
>>12346926
The plastic is cracked? Probably not, chances are it cracked because the plastic is brittle with age. Your only option is to make a new stand.
>>
>>12346960
Yeah it cracked from the bottom up to the hinge. I had a feeling there’s probably no coming back from that.

i wanted to reply to >>12344506 but thread was dead you can download the homebrew or i made an iso if you can play burnt discs

https://files.catbox.moe/b61s8e.iso

only downside to playing from disc is that you cant take screenshots because its not writeable like fan sd card also i use 100% scaling it has a small bit of cutoff but is better than playing with blackborder imo
>>
>>12347109
And you need a modded GameCube, of course. In case, that wasn't clear.
>>
>>12347109
>i use 100% scaling
Wouldn't that be 3x? 240 by 160 X 3 on a 640 by 480 container...
Not him, I've simply not messed with GBi settings. I just use whatever presets (speedrunner, I think?)

Hello anons!
I found this CRT TV on the street, and honestly I don’t have much experience with these. I’d like to know if the image issues are due to bad calibration or if it’s just plain broken. If it’s the first case, any advice on how I could test or adjust it?
On the front/top it has:
PICTURE, BRIGHT, and COLOUR knobs, plus an AFT switch.
It also has per-channel switches for red, yellow and blue and a kind of bar labeled 2/7/14 and 6/13/83.
On the back:
Holes labeled R (BKG), G (BKG), B (BKG) , FOCUS, SCRN, V-SIZE; and a knob for V-HOLD.
I tried connecting an RCA console through a VCR (via RF), but I couldn’t get any image, just static. When I connect an antenna, I do see some shapes, like it’s picking something up (though it’s basically impossible to get good reception where I live).
Any help will be appreciated.

looks damaged beyond repair. Even if you can get it to display a video signal I really doubt degaussing will fix that. Don't know the technical reason but usually when they are fucked up like that it was some serious damage like dropping them on the screen.

genuine question, do you enjoy ruining your eyes with the shittiest display possible? i cannot understand what's the appeal on ancient, overpriced hardware
>>
>>12347893
>ruining your eyes
Anon I've been using CRTs my entire 36 years of living and my eyesight is fine. Why do you not understand the appeal of using hardware that other hardware was designed to be used on?
>>
>>12347905
how is that possible? I'm 32 and I can't fucking stand the atrocious display of CRTs, never had
games are literally software, not hardware, and you can use the same software with modern hardware, so no, I do not understand the appeal of hunting down used, inferior trashboxes from 3 decades ago
>>
>>12347934
>how is that possible?
Idk man, why would a CRT hurt your eyes lol. You know what's atrocious? The rear panel projection TVs from the early 2000s and early LCDs.
>games are literally software, not hardware, and you can use the same software with modern hardware
Games are software that are designed for specific hardware. The design of that software and it's graphics lent itself to the hardware availability at the time which was CRTs. It's not that hard of a concept to grasp. There's literally like a billion reference images you can look at that show the difference.
>>
>>12347135
im not sure desu the wiki doesnt make it very clear either

--zoom=
Set zoom (default: auto).
--zoom-auto[=]
Enable best fit for a given screen size ratio, or safe area. The default is the Game Boy Player Start-up Disc's Screen Size setting (0.75 or 0.875).

im pretty sure it is integer scaled though and if not its not been noticable for me and normally get annoyed when things arent integer scaled like on the 3ds it is very obvious in ds games

>>
>>12348040
Anon if you can't comprehend why pixel art designed around crt technology looks better on a crt vs a modern display that's a you problem. When even the official companies are releasing crt scanline filters for their old games you'd think it'd make sense for you.

Also just like the other anon said, what's the point of going into threads for things you don't like? That's such a weird phenomenon on this website.

>>
>>12348353

Not really. They lack the masks that the tvs have. Emulating will look better on a crt monitor than an lcd monitor(without shaders) but way worse than a crt tv. You're better off with either crt tv, or lcd/oled monitor with shaders. Crt monitors are very good for older PC games though.
>>
I KNOW WHAT I GOT
>>
>>12348353
It's definitely different. Way to different to honestly say one is better than the other: apples and oranges. If it's a console, I'd rather play on a standard definition CRT TV. Even for stuff like the Dreamcast which officially supports VGA output.

I need some help. I set up my CRT monitor and I love how it looks but at the same time it's sort of uncomfortable to look at? I haven't used a CRT monitor in a really long time and don't remember anything besides "adjust brightness and contrast" which I already fiddled with a bit (not sure if it's correct but seems alright), do I just need to get used to it or is there something I can adjust here? Are the colors too cold? Refresh rate is at 90 so I don't think it's that.
>>
>>12352003
Photos of CRTs are never an accurate representation of the colour but it does look very blue-heavy which causes eye strain. More likely you're running it at too low refresh rate- VGA monitors have a noticeable flicker under around 85hz but it's fast enough that you can't 'see' it exactly. Try turning up the refresh rate. and the image should look more stable and easy on the eyes.

A correctly configured VGA CRT is actually easier on the eyes compared to an LCD imo, no backlight.
>>
>>12352003
>>12352054
Lol my bad I read your post and somehow glossed over "refresh rate is at 90". Try turning it up anyways.
>>
>>12352054
>>12352057
I can do a refresh rate of 100 at 800x600. I think it allows for 120? Not sure. And yeah I'm aware photos aren't accurate. Now that is. It's shocking how crazy good CRTs look, my memory didn't do it justice. Especially depth. Can't emulate that with a shader or filter.
>>
>>12352054
Xanadu next is probably the game that gave me the least amount of trouble visually. Maybe because it's less bright or there's less blue.. I might need to mess around with a warmer color tone. Too bad this set doesn't have a menu to change that. It's pretty basic, though at least it wasn't used too much.
>>
>>12347210
You put your dualshock 2 on top of your crt despite the fact the dualshock has magnets in them that can fuck up your tv
>>
>>12352003
>>12352069
it does look a bit too blue, shame there's no way to adjust that on that set. The only other thing I can think of that might make it easier on the eyes is adjusting the focus. Pretty easy to do but it might already be as good as it gets.

Follow up to my post in the last thread about watching media server content via my old Xbox, in the unlikely event anyone cares. I figured it out. I was using an XBMC4Xbox.xml Plex profile with the newly released XBMC 4 and couldn't make it work. Reverting to the old 2016 XBMC 3.5.3 (which that XML file was made for) solved the issue. It's now transcoding SD and HD/h.265 content no problem.

>>
>>12352754
Nta but focus is adjusted by turning a potentiometer on the flyback. I use a plastic spudger to do it.
Also you should not use in-game footage to calibrate. You're just guessing like that. Download the NEC test pattern generator.

How long do people usually use a CRT monitor before they get a headache or need to rest? Seems it's a few hours for me.
>>
>>12352754
yeah you take off the back and it's on the flyback on all CRTs. its really easy but you have to do it while the monitor is turned on so don't touch the shocky bits

Depends heavily on the type of CRT it is. Older computer monitors from the mid 90s I can do about 6-8 hours. But on higher hz, I never get eye strain. And the distance matters too, as does the lighting level and type in the room.

What's a good CRT filter for a CRT monitor on RetroArch? My basic bitch little CRT monitor needs help
>>
>>12356360
>there is only me and my experiences of the world and nothing else
If you haven't used a CRT in like 20 years, your eyes need time to adjust. Took me a few days and now I'm fine for however long. Also, some people can't tolerate them period. Thankfully I can bask in the glow.
>>
>>12357114
If you want it to look like a filter does just turn the resolution down. You'll get thick 'scanlines' and whatnot. Ideal resolution for no-fuss emulation is 640x480@60hz imo and use 2x integer scaling for that pristine CRT look.

Any filter is going to look so much worse than just running it differently.
>>
>>12357276
60hz on a CRT monitor? It's gonna have flicker.
>>
>>12356698
Looks horrific to me.
I’d rather have a single emulation machine which is the road I’ve gone down.
I’ve owned most of that stuff at one time or other (not the exact same CRTs) and it would be really depressing to have it all again.
Different tastes I guess. You do you but I don’t get it.

>>12357320

>>
>>
>>
>>
>>12357320
Yeah it has flicker but depending on the monitor it can be alright. With games and video I personally find it alright but using it for anything else is a no-no.

60hz flicker means you'll get the full motion quality. Compare it to 120hz and you'll find the 60hz is actually a lot smoother with stuff that doesn't run any higher internally, like emulation. Quirk of CRTs.
>>
People should stop playing console games on PC CRTs. They're missing the point greatly. The resolution of those CRTs do nothing for said games. Might as well play on modern displays. It you were dedicating that CRT for actual PC games of the era then it would be something, but you're not. You're a clown just wanting good boy pats on your back. You're not getting one. Fuck you.
>>
>>12357724

lol you are super mad right now, but you are half right. I wanna play high res PC games on this thing, i already own plenty of consoles and 28 inch widescreen philips CRT. No point on playing there what i already have on real hardware. But i just got a very basic PC -it has a i3 2100 and no graphics card- so i need to upgrade first. I was just showing off and testing it after cleaning it, and giving it an adjustment. Anyways if you find of these in the wild, and want a retro PC, buy this thing, it has a ton of options you can mess with, and for low res Mame games it looks spectacular.

Should've known it's the fucker who likes to desecrate games intended for 4:3 aspect ratios by forcing 16:9/16:10/whatevs on them. The entire hobby is being filled with faggots. Faggot loser. Even console games emulated on a CRT monitor are far superior because of the depth the monitor grants the image, among other things. Not everyone cares about scanlines either. It also hasn't occurred to you that someone might've only had space for one and decided to opt for a monitor to have the option to play both PC and console games. Regardless, you're a salty little shit, sorry your life is so terrible you turned out this way.

Where have you anons actually found and acquired CRT monitors in recent history (within a month)? I looked at the pastebin, have looked at online classifieds on multiple sites, and I sincerely do not know where to look for a decent CRT monitor. Even in a highly populated area, there's fuck-all online, and seemingly little to no options elsewhere. Bluntly, harassing all the production/medical/etc company types listed in the hunting guide for their e-waste just sounds like an impractical, fruitless endeavor (especially for socially inept autists like me). Is the market just that dry? Frustrating.
>>
>>12362089
The last substantive collection of monitors I've seen was at a movie prop house sale. There's one near me that's been doing annual sales to thin their inventory.
>>
>>12362089

I'm guessing e-recycling centers. Fortunately for me, a guy who worked at one near me would post nearly anything that he didn't consider to be junk to FB marketplace, so that's where I got mine, and he posted many other good monitors. He went quiet though and I really haven't seen many other decent crt monitors get posted. So yeah, I would just go to one, give them your number and say you'll pay for one if it's good enough but probably be prepared to wait awhile. Honestly I wouldn't even bother with them unless it's going to be for old pc games. The people who say they're better for modern gaming are totally retarded, unless it's the $5000 models that can push high resolutions and hz. I say that as someone who uses a crt monitor, they are not better than OLEDs except for old low res pc games.

I kinda prefer to play on my emulation handhelds over my crt to be honest.
The crt requires too much babying. Can't just leave a game running and walk out the room, worried about eating into the precious time left on my crt.
Can't put a game to sleep and come back later because old consoles dont do that.
Have to sit in place instead of being able to play wherever I want.
Handhelds are just better.

Nah, I play on every type of screen it just depends on what I'm doing. My CRT setup is also my emulation setup with proper controllers for each system and it's specifically for like NES through GC. I also have handhelds like an Anbernic and Steamdeck and my main setup is a modern 57" Ultrawide. My PS5 and Switch 2 are hooked up to a few year old 85" Samsung which is also my theater room. My CRTs are right next to my main desktop and it's easily to turn one on and hop into SMW or Zelda or something it ain't that deep.

This is not how normal people interact. You're on a website and a thread for discussion, and instead of discussing something you brought up, you're whining and throwing insults.
All you've done is prove me right, you've got nothing to say. Look at this pic I took in japan! So what dude? I've been there many times, this isn't my instagram, I don't need to post images of my trips here. You act like a female.
You made the claim "I've experience more in this world than you will ever begin to" despite not knowing anything about the person you're speaking to because this is an anonymous image board, so surely you must be confident that you have a better life than the average person yet you appear incapable of sharing any of these amazing experiences outside of random pictures.
So that means one of two things
1. you're verbally challenged so you can't put your experiences into words
2. You know your experiences are not interesting and you're afraid to expose it

This is what your experiences really are in a nutshell based on what you've shared. you went to some tourist sites, took some pics and went back home to shop online

Wow, truly an experience most people here have not had.

You wouldn't get it. The difference between working roughly 1.5hrs a day at any time I choose as long as I get my work done at home with little to no interaction with bosses and unlimited PTO is my current job. It's like I'm in an entirely different world than normal 9-5ers especially even from other WFHers. I mean, just a normal day for me is waking up to no alarm, then doing whatever the fuck I want right away. Go to the store before people flood the streets? Easy. Eat a nice morning breakfast with no rush? Easy. I typically wake up late and hang out with friends in discord and such throughout the evening and then once everyone hops off I'll watch a movie or listen to music while finishing my work load. It's fucking awesome.

I used to work in logistics for 15+ years since I was literally old enough to legally work I have worked full time. I started out in the summer at 15.5 and used to do fucking 12-14 hour days at the beginning unloading ocean containers and shrink wrapping everything after sorting, stacking, palletizing. Then I moved on to being the night dock worker after school handling all incoming freight and having to weigh and dim it all (measure). The warehouse was not temperature controlled so when it was 0 degrees outside and you were driving a forklift you wanted to kill yourself from the bone chilling cold. Even when I finally got into management/dispatching it's just surrounded by the most miserable assholeish people of all time in the industry yelling and shouting at each other, pure hell.

I finally escaped and landed this job and if I can I will do it until I fucking die lmao. Just having to wake up early every morning and commuting somewhere is enough to break me, let alone knowing I'll be in some office or whatever yapping with some bitch about her dogs and kids to pretend to have a reason to stick around for 8 hours for corporate.

Also, I do eat steak, I love filet mignon.

How can I use a standard 31kHz VGA monitor with a PC-9821? Normally the resolution is 640x400 (16:10 aspect ratio, 24kHz), so out of range of the monitor. You can force the output to 31kHz, but it usually looks wrong and some games don't like that at all. I guess PC monitors supporting 24kHz outside of Japan are pretty rare, are there any devices that could convert the signal to e.g. 640x480 by inserting blank lines above and below the picture? Does OSSC or GBS-C do that?

You're better off buying a separate dvd/vhs player because when the one inside the tv set goes down now you havea tv set with a player inside it that doesnt work staring at you, reminding you you have a half broken unit while if you get a separate player, you can just easily replace it.
