I'm actually taken aback by how much I've been enjoying Phantasy Star 1
Started it up the other night just to see what it was like, and now I'm finding Mirror Shields on desert islands, walking down into dungeons to buy cake, casting WALL to smack around dragons
This game is filled with esoteric stuff and vague directions on where to go next, but I've been enjoying the challenge. Hell I almost wanted to make actual dungeon maps for this playthrough but sadly lack graph paper.

It's a great RPG really, better than then the 8-bit Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games in my opinion. It's too bad the sequels didn't keep the first person dungeon perspective as it was pretty immersive. I personally had some graph paper in storage and used it to make maps. Kinda fun to do so, I think Deadly Towers was the last game I had used ot with to make maps for before that

I personally just prefer the PSG music on most games even if the FM stuff https://youtu.be/eoZNL6f7_mI?si=6yML-y6A3gHPF2yq is objectively probably better quality.
I dunno I guess I'm just used to that classic Master System sound and it just feels odd without it. The FM stuff just makes me think of Genesis games instead

It's absolutely great.
Sadly, in a lot of ways 2 takes steps back. The "dungeon crawling" is not nearly as good, especially due to this awful foreground effect making already confusing dungeons even more confusing. The story is fairly bare bones as well.
If you are playing through the series like I did, I'd give it the 2 hour rule and if you just aren't having fun, watch a recap and move on to 4. 4 is as good as everyone says it is and ties back into 1 and 2 in some really fun ways. The story is also a lot better and the game does some awesome stuff to make sure you aren't wasting your time.

>tfw after beating 4 I wanted more
>not really much left outside of some Game Gear titles
>decide to try Nova for psp
>gameplay is actually okay but the story is mediocre at best
>doesn't really touch back on 1-4 outside of various naming conventions
>saddles you with the equivalent of a DMPC, feel like a side character in the story
makes me sad.

I'm trying to make a program to map the game. I really want to get time to play this someday.

I'm actually playing 1 because I am such a fan of 2 lol
Actually the one I am obviously trying to keep a open mind for is 3, which I've fired up for a bit, saw that battle screen with those chickens and went "Huh, I'll come back later"

It's fairly short, I'd say you can clear it in a weekend or two, and whilst I still play the SMS version the Switch port adds lots of really nice QoL features and an automap in one of the modes which obviously helps a lot if you're intimidated by an oldschool JRPG.
PS1 is my favourite 8-bit JRPG

That's absolutely fair. If you dig classic JRPG's then I don't think there's much to dislike in 2. It has a bit of a bare bones story, but most games around that time period did, the turn based combat is fast and the sprite work is nice. Like I said, about my only gripe is the foreground effect making it hard to keep track of your exploration. For me, going from 1 to 2 was not fun, but it was worth it to get to 4 and see how it touched back on them. 1 and 4 are the peaks in my book, 2 is good, just hard to go back to if you aren't accustomed to classic JRPG's like me.

The ending of this game is very unique and almost unsettling. I don't wanna spoil anything, but if you come back after beating this then we can have a cool discussion. Great game, all four are. 3 isn't as good as the others but is over hated and worth at least one play through.
>>
I've always been a fan of these games recognizing the repetition in JRPG combat and just autoplaying the last command you selected until you manually stop it. That's the one thing i think 3 did better than 4, though 4 has macros which is very much appreciated too. It's like a more tactical version of FF13's auto combat system.

Had the same experience. You know it came out literally two days after Final Fantasy 1? And Phantasy Star II came out right after Final Fantasy 2. That's what surprised me the most.

As somebody who has tried and failed to get into jrpgs time and time again, the one thing that helped me beat this series is that it does its absolute best to make sure you never waste your time. It gives you spells, items, and vehicles to speed up travel. The grind (on the jp versions) were minimal, and it just cut out a lot of the fluff most jrpg's had. Heck, on 4 I even 100%'d it just because I genuinely enjoyed my time with it.
Sucks there aren't many places to go with the series after that.

It is cryptic in is old fashioned gameplay, but that's the same charm which led to those Etrian Odyssey games featuring those same old-fashioned design philosophies which are off-putting to most yet a limited few find rewarding. A classmate lent me a Power Base converter and the game, just to demonstrate it as one of their most favorite games of the day and I too was enamored by its gameplay loop.

Definitely the Switch version. The automap is just a huge improvement over the original game. Without it you will be having to break out graph paper and make maps of every dungeon which may be something you'll completely hate

While the Genesis+addons, Saturn, and Dreamcast all are top 10 non-PC/handheld gaming consoles to me, I also like the other systems too from Microsoft, NEC, Nintendo, SNK, etc. However, yes, I am a fan of Sega games which is uncommon and not the popular opinion, I get it.

Last time I played it, I used a dedicated PS mapping tool for Android called Maps for Phantasy Star, but I'm not sure it runs on modern Android

I loved Phantasy Star 1 and beat it years ago, but every time I've tried 2 I've bounced off. I know there's a couple rebalance patches, should I try one of those or just skip to 4?

Quite honestly, the original. Yeah the abbreviation and name changes can be a drag, but the dialog itself is pretty well done for the time. Maybe a handful of moments could've been reclarified, but fan translations have this tendency of throwing out the baby with the bathwater, especially if you have someone fellating themselves over the fact they expanded the character limit. Then script injector tends to lose self control and make it flowery. In this case, they added literal fanfiction based on a synopsis of a manga adaptation or something they read...
Very very few translations of already translated games justify themselves, unless the official release was uncensored or it had intrusive gameplay tweaks, or a previous fan translation was a total hackjob.

Switch version due to the auto map and built in EXP multiplier. Which is one of the few times where I can safely say the EXP multiplier didn't break the balance of the game, cause even with it on the final two bosses still pushed me hard.

The literal one looks like it had the courage to roll a lot back to the original translation, and seems the closest...
What was the point of the non-literal "retranslations" again?

Some Japanese guy made a mapper for Wizardry but you can use it for anything.

I tried to give 3 a chance a few months back and honestly completely hated it. It just felt like such a dull uninspired mess to me. I gave up after a few hours and have no real desire to ever play it again, maybe you'll feel differently. I would absolutely avoid it and go straight to Phantasy Star 4 after you finish the 2nd game.
Be patient with 2, it's a good game but some of the dungeon designs can be rather extreme and even with maps it can be very challenging. It's worth completing at least once though
