Is this actually any good?

I wish the random encounter rate was lower but yeah, it's one of my favorite Famicom rpgs.

If you like famicom RPGs then youll like it. If you dont then probably not. I personally enjoyed my playthrough, its at least short if you cant stomach long RPGs.

The literal only interesting things about the game aren't even the game itself, but the circumstances surrounding it.
>mostly complete prototype game dug up and brought to the public
>proof that Aeon Genesis/Gideon and his cronies are capable of finishing a project in a timely fashion, even if the end result is dreadfully inaccurate speed-translated sludge that clearly didn't even get a revision pass to catch the countless translation mistakes (not "localization choices" but genuine errors)
>>
>3 posts in
>already complaining about the translation
God, you all are such faggots it's unbelievable.
>>
>>12355080
>complain about legitimate issues that will forever be tied to the game since no one will engage with it a second time and no one will attempt a retranslation due to how irrelevant it is
>"UGH! CAN YOU FAGGOTS STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT LEGITIMATE ISSUES FOR 5 MINUTES!? GOD!!!"
You get one chance to make a good impression. You get one chance to do the job right, the first time. It isn't wrong to complain when there are real, quantifiable, objective problems.

It clearly can't be that important to you considering you spent zero words of your posts discussing the content that was translated. People on this board spend more time talking about translation than they do talking about writing. It must be some sort of complex people have about not being able to read Japanese. It's never "I thought this bit was funny" or "yeah that character annoyed me" it's always "here's this small idiosyncrasy with the translation" and in the scope of the game it's always some bullshit that is virtually irrelevant.

>People on this board spend more time talking about translation than they do talking about writing
When the accuracy of the translation is doubtful, why bother discussing the writing until it's been fixed?
>>

Because it doesn't matter you fucking dip shit. Is SOOO much of the game SOOO different that you think talking about how some NPC says
>His house is up in the northwest part of town.
instead of
>He is at the house up northwest.
and other such trifling bullshit is more important than the actual contents of the game? Genuinely, who gives a shit. Story isn't even the focus of Splatterworld. It's more about the gameplay and general adventure (as is pretty much every Famicom JRPG). You could play this with a barely compressible 2010 Google Translate quality translation and it wouldn't impact the core experience. And even if it did matter, the Aeon Genesis translation is fine. The characterization is all in tact. There's never any confusion about what is happening. The game is still charming. You can point out minor differences till your face turns blue but it won't change the fact they are irrelevant.

And don't hit me with some bullshit like
>muh artistic integrity!
You know who doesn't complain about minor translation differences? Original developers. If you try to convince me that any of the original dev team would disapprove of the Aeon Genesis translation as a way to play their game, you are out of your mind.

It's the best thing that happened to retro in 2025 alongside Viewpoint 2064

Not him but I've played enough Famicom RPGs to tell you that they were all about the art of conveying as much information to the player as possible in as few words as possible.
In this case it conveys that the old man living on the outskirts of town is a hermit; plus there is another house in the northwest part *of* town which is central to the story and game progression so this could lead to the player confusing the two.

>complain about legitimate issues that will forever be tied to the game since no one will engage with it a second time and no one will attempt a retranslation due to how irrelevant it is
So.
What happened to the other "nearly-complete" one? Typical bluffing? Or did Recobbledtard successfully discourage him from fucking with Aeon Genesis?

Lazarus' last update was in November, so before AG's patch came out. I'd wager he silently canceled it. Who knows though, maybe he'll surprise us all by releasing the patch out of nowhere. If you really want to know for sure, you'd have to ask him.
>>
>>12355172
He seems to have industry connections, so he's likely trying to get in talks with Namco behind the scenes to offer to do an official translation for a digital release totally different from the so-called 'claimed' fan translation. If that's undoable, he'll release it. Probably. I understand why one wouldn't want to be on the same playing field as a rushjobber. Or it really was a bluff because no one expected AG to actually deliver so soon.
I don't know man, I think I just dislike fan translations now, especially lately. They're either rushjobs by the worst people, or they're 'claimed' and sat on (either naively or maliciously). There's rarely a middle ground now.
Yes, I took the learn-Japanese-pill. Unfortunately, my studies didn't train me for the hiragana soup of older games.
>>
>>12355119
The concerning part is the fact that they couldn't even get the simplest of Japanese phrases and words right. And if they can't even get N5 tier babby goo goo ga ga Japanese correct, what hope is there for the rest of it?
>>
>>12355318
Did you even play the game, or are you just here to stir shit?

Why don't you do it?

Weeaboos have been really fucking uppity about translations recently. They're obviously talentless dunning-krugers who could totally do a better job, just later, they'll get to it, you'll see, they're better than you.
>>
>>12355624
>implying the talentless dunning-kruger weebs aren't the ones speedrunning mtl shit who get off on that brief moment of time where they're the only ones without direct competition because their irl lives suck so much that they have to live vicariously through streams of their shitty hacks

It's being open sourced very soon. Watch as the autist refuses to contribute for the second time and just continues to bitch

You wish, but talking to the younger generation at places like RHDN and its "successors" has convinced me that user-friendly tools and social media have done real, lasting damage. Out of respect for private correspondence, believe me when I say I have been told directly by new hackers that they really don't care if their work is amateur-hour, as long as they can give the impression that it's not. Some of them legit don't know Japanese but use their hacks as resume centerpieces; support them, and you support lowering industry standards. At least weebs decades ago were doing it more for the art of it instead of being terminally online dopamine junkies. I just don't hold much hope for the future of fan-translations, especially after places like that refuse to bow out gracefully.
>>
>>12355853
>use their hacks as resume centerpieces
What is this meme? No one in any position of hiring employees cares about you fucking around with children's toys. If anything, you should hide a translation patch from employers because it's embarrassing.
>>
>>12355831
>owing your hack's existence to the undercutter
No, screw that, I'd rather continue to toil at a snail's pace than ever admit I needed help from that tool.

NTA but I know for a fact that yes, it happens. For instance it's fairly common for programmers to be expected to talk about a personal project of theirs during a job interview.
>>
>>12355097
>>12355119
Holy fucking based post. Translation autists are so obnoxious. I think they are genuinely very autistic. They don't understand the nuances of language and translation so they insist that everything most be direct translations of the source material rather than translating for clarity, style, or effect
>>
>>12355880
Unironically Tomato's fault for inadvertantly devaluing an idea. Again.
>>
>>12357174
>For instance it's fairly common for programmers to be expected to talk about a personal project of theirs during a job interview.
Yeah. For things like "I made significant contributions to open source software that is widely used in enterprise contexts" and "I developed the full stack of a commercially available web app with an active user base," not "I rearranged the menus in Blingo's Schpladingo on the FM Towns Marty so the item names could be a maximum of 16 characters instead of 12."
>>
>>12355853
There are tons of made up translations from before social media. It's just that nobody bothers to scrutinize those like they do with new ones. Just because the barrier of entry wasn't so low you couldn't MTL everything doesn't mean N3-tier translators that thought they could totally translate didn't exist. You average translator is usually some high school or college kid who barely knows what they're doing, it's rare that they have a decent grasp of the language unless they were raised bilingual.
>>
>>12355097
posters from /v/ are like that, always bitching and trying to make other people miserable like they are. faggots.

It's kind of important to playing the game.

I would be more impressed by the latter.

It's playable, if you want a direct translation you can learn the language and gain the benefits of doing so.

No i'd rather just call out shitty translations when I see them.
