02/01/26(Sun)05:15:32 No.12356986 someone will need to explain to me why this proprietary format is still around and used. It made sense in 2003 when weak-ass consoles needed a way to decode video. it's doesn't make sense now when h264 works on everything.

it's one of the big reasons why many /vr/ games break. some game codes embed them. and due to copyright they still exists today, the modders/sourceporters remove the videos from from /vr/ when they hack them to make them work better on modern machines.shit format with shit consequences.

i don't disagree, but it's 20 year later, and we have much more modern and feature rich "it just werks" codecs available now.

anyone using unreal engine, for starters. You get it for free so might as well make use of it.

i don't know for a fact but surely if epic keep spending money developing a codec designed specifically for games there must be some noticeable upsides.

This was just being discussed in The Phrozen Keep. Did you know that if you add 100 to the audio quality setting it will change the audio codec from BAU1 to BAU2? Some games, including Diablo 2, will only decode BAU2 streams.

Unreal Engine games use it and the results are as expected.
Talos Principle 2 for example has TWENTY gigs of Bink videos that in total are only 15 minutes long.
Even the fucking semi-static menu screen background is a 300MB video which quadrupled to 1.2gigs with the DLC.
