Final Fantasy VII Classic is going to get delisted on Steam
Thoughts? Apparently they will be replacing it with a newer version not seen before. Things seem to be incompatible across versions. Modders are gonna get rekt.

Nope, it will be this version, 100% guaranteed: https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy_VII_version_differe nces#Eighth_generation_and_later_of _video_game_consoles

i imagine it's just gonna be the same as the PS4/Switch version, they're probably trying to unify all versions to simply updates moving forward in advance of the 30th anniversary stuff they're planning

Most likely it's going to be the version that was on the Squarw Enix online store that was recently delisted at the end of 2025. That version has some minor performance improvements, doesn't require the launched that the old version does, supports more resolution options, and supports Japanese text. It's expected that this version will replace the Steam version.

Preciate the warning OP. I think the sale ends tomorrow so I went ahead and grabbed it. Not the biggest deal as I could just emulate, but I figure it's always nice to have delisted games for the ease of steam deck installation.

>Didn't remove the word retard in any version of this game that was ever released, not even on the Switch version released in 2019
>Thinks they are doing all this effort and releasing an entirely different version where the save files won't even be compatible just to remove it now
Retard
It's likely just going to be the current console versions, the current Steam version is a much older one that has an annoying shitty launcher, tries to sign into S-E's servers, controller "support" is pretty much just tacked-on jank where without mods the game still tells you to press keyboard buttons, and is much more limited in it's boost functions, as well as requires servers to use them since it's "boost" features just rely on hacking your save. I could not care less about the boost/cheat bullshit but this chance is likely to just bring the Steam version up to parity with the newer console versions. Hopefully this also means no more stupid launcher and proper controller support.

Maybe the modders can simply install an older version over the Steam copy when running the mod install script?
I'm interested to see how it runs, but when you look up the list of revisions... In the newest PS4/Switch version (which this is likely a port of) it says:
>Pre-rendered backgrounds have been blurred to reduce pixelation on screen resolutions running on either 720p or 1080p.
Hmmm. We'll see, anyone know when it's releasing?

i didn't buy my copy. my sister's friend's brother had a copy and my sister wanted to try it because she loved FFX. she borrowed it, then her friend was a piece of shit and they stopped talking, sister stopped playing videogames, i got to keep FFVII.

- wrong color temp (too warm)
- low poly / high texture mismatch problem
- areas too "clean" (like the bar top and fridge door)
- black areas too dark / wrong gamma value
- oversaturated color
- cozy lamp and tv halo effects missing
- generally flat and dead looking
- floor texture plank joints mush together
- wrong font choice

A mod that lets you run around as the party leader instead of Cloud. Shame it doesn't work in combination with the nino mod

Using music packs is the sign of a retard. The Yamaha XG MIDIs that came with the PC version are outright better quality than the PS1 soundtrack, and unlike in the 90s are accessible to anybody now. Ideally you should have an MU80/90/100 hooked up to your system, but using one of the S-YXG soft synths is an acceptable compromise. Either way, it's impossible to go back to the flat, muffled PS1 tracks afterwards.

>newer version not seen before
Pretty certain the version they're replacing it with is the same one that's been on the Windows Store/Game Pass since 2020 which is basically the same as the PS4 version and doesn't seem to have mod support of any kind.

The new one is a little bit less janky out of the box and includes better controller support and audio quality, but it's got a different file structure and isn't compatible with any preexisting mods as far to my knowledge. It's a straight port of the PS4/Xbox One/Switch version which was based on the PC version but has the aforementioned minor differences.

That isn't true at all.

Works just fine with the Yamaha soft synths, including in FF7 (plus DOSBox, GOG releases once you edit the INI, etc). Just need to select the XG option in the launcher. There's also loopMIDI for some of the Roland stuff, though I have a real SC-55mkII hooked up to my Windows 11 machine for that.

Uh huh...
>>
>>12357934
I don't really like when companies do this, but in the long term I'm not sure it matters. Anyone who wants to emulate the PSX version can. I picked up a copy for $5 just in case the new version is trash and censored. Does anyone know if the current version is worse than the PSX version in some way?
>>
>>12361368
>3 years to hit 7 million, half of what the original game sold in less time
this is also in an era where you have access to a logarithmically larger customer base, which is why games break sales records constantly
doing less than half in this era is an abject failure no matter what coping articles try to sell you
>impressive start
purely subjective wishy-washy puff piece with nothing substanstive
>sells 72k
72k sales? You're trying to push that as GOOD? You're clearly extremely mentally ill and delusional
You're exactly the type of person the white house twitter was aiming their "steel industry has recovered" graph at. There is no helping someone as foolish as you.

>Does anyone know if the current version is worse than the PSX version in some way?
Depends what you consider worse. When it first launched on Steam it had lower quality midi music, but that was replaced with recorded music from the PSX version years ago.
Beyond that it's pretty much on parity, but with some oddities. Such as using a launcher to start the game. Some people originally thought you needed an account to play the game, but you don't, that's only if you want to use the cloud saves (and I think the boost) feature. You can just start the game without an account. Controller support was not that great either (Pretty sure the launcher is doing some kind of controller to keyboard mapping and the game itself lacks native controller support) as the game would still tell you to press keyboard buttons, though there was a mod to "fix" this. It just simply edited the script to hard-code it to say something like "Press [X]" instead of "Press [CTRL]" in every instance it would tell you to use a keyboard button.
>just in case the new version is trash and censored
While S-E were suspiciously light on details, I highly highly doubt it's going to get censored. Considering the Switch version was still not censored from the original PSX release, and that came out in 2019, it would make absolutely no sense to release a replacement for just the Steam version that censors anything while leaving the consoles alone. It's highly likely just going to be the modern console version of the game that's currently on PS4 and Switch, which is basically a slightly updated/fixed version of the current one. It has better boost features that don't rely on hacking a save and is likely going to have better controller support and hopefully no more launcher. Chances are they likely don't want to keep those old 2013 servers running just to use cloud saves and the janky limited boost features, also it's a lot easier to manage any updates if all versions are in parity with each other.

Ah yes, here comes the goalpost moving. Notice that first one with the 7 million sales is from 2023, it's not even counting the Xbox and Switch versions yet, which as you can see with the other articles are also selling strong on those platforms.
>purely subjective wishy-washy puff piece with nothing substanstive
And that statement had even less substance
>72k sales? You're trying to push that as GOOD?
72K, on Switch 2 alone, in Japan alone, for a game that came out on other platforms six years ago. Yes, that's actually pretty good considering the majority of the fanbase would have played it on PS4, PS5, or PC by now.

Funny, when I looked for articles about it performing poorly the most common result was a fucking GameFaqs post... linking to a tweet... that was deleted.

Rather impossible yet because AI models still has some jackass deliriums unless is trained like a motherfucker, plus retards will never edit ai upscaled images to fix the deliriums and artifacts either, just look at the old resident evil packs and compare to the quake 1,2 or even the old douk and doom ones, even the morrowind one.
they are all lazy as fuck, the boomer shooter ones and morrowind at least had people editing them after to fix the problems.
the resident evil and FF ones are all fucked up with artifacts and deliriums.
