I havent played this game since waaay back in the day on gameboy color. im going through the snes version now and fuck me Im amazed how stupendously comfy this is. the graphics and sound are insanely good, on the same tier and maybe even better than ffvi or chrono trigger. I always thought of dragon quest as a game with simple presentation so it just really caught me by surprise. the fight backgrounds are so well done and having a different version for each time of day even in dungeons is such a nice touch. I love how quick and snappy the battles are too. I tried dragon quest V on snes as well as the 1/2 ports and to me this is just 10x more enjoyable, its much better than vii on ps1 as well. it doesnt have the crazy story of V but everything else is so much better. seems really fucked up they let one of the best rpgs on a console known for great rpgs just not even leave japan at all. out of curiosity I tried out the gbc, nes, mobile and hd2d versions and they all seem objectively worse to me. so squaresoft released four different versions of the same game, but with the actual best version they didnt even bother... make it make sense.

i was thinking of doing the nes version but I MIGHT be tempted to try the snes
i generally do not favor any remake at all period but that is some pretty peak spriting

heh heh i know which one i'm picking then

This is why I play Rance games, because he would have saved her from rape and then raped her as his reward.

Ah just like I remember it on my CRT...

yes, I also remember sprite flicker in NES and warping textures on ps1. doesnt mean they are "correct" or the best way to play those games. but by all means enjoy your ugly stretched pixels bro.

NES is still the best and most balanced gameplay experience and the 8 bit graphics/sound are still great for the time. The biggest problem it has is being a lot slower than the newer versions. But a lot of the later additions like a bag/multi hit weapons/personalities/higher gold/exp drop water down the experience making the game too easy. But I wouldnt fault anyone for preferring SNES. I hate remakes as well but this one is a rare exception that was made with a ton of love, nothing like the outsourced DEI-makes we are used to now. Id give them both a try and see what you prefer. GBC is another great option, it has more content than both nes/snes versions.

The fact that you didn't feel the need to have a priest up to that point is a testament to how much easier the SNES version is compared to the original

>Im definitely making my mage a sage, what should I do with my warrior/thief?
Why not make the thief a sage and the mage a cleric (but not before learning the Bikill spell)?
>>
>>12360075
This, Sage is for a parry member that didn't get any spells, it's a waste to use the Sage book on a cleric or mage
>>
>>12358917
>can you rush to pyramid from romaly
yes but you will need to grind a lot to make it through the pyramid alive
>is there any point to being king/queen
no but its funny, especially the kings advisor saying "Ive been made king about 5 times now"
>what do with warrior/thief
make one of them go through cleric/priest at some point so you have 2 good healers otherwise post game will be a bitch

>Im definitely making my mage a sage, what should I do with my warrior/thief?
I've found the best way to party in DQ3 is to have a Monk, Cleric, and Mage(or whatever their class names were, I remember the cleric was called Pilgrim in the NES version). Once they get to about level 40, the Monk gets converted over to a Warrior to take advantage of the better defense and attack while keeping the big HP pool, and the Cleric or Mage gets converted to Sage, while the remaining one gets converted to the other magical class. That way you end up with a Warrior with top notch gear and a huge HP pool, and two magic users who can access nearly every spell in the game with huge MP pools to draw from.
You can turn your Warrior into a Monk, but it's a straight downgrade at this point. You lose the armor and weaponry for no real gain. The thief is almost worthless, and his stats won't lend themselves to a good magic user or fighter. Might as well just roll with the team you have now with the sage, although the thief's lack of damage will make late game more of a grind.

thank you i will :)

Two Dragon Quest threads in the catalog and both of them are arguments about what remake is the best. remakes infect and rape all discussion.

I love these

Most of the Dragon Quest games have been remade multiple times by now and I don't think anyone really considers the original Famicom games to be the definitive versions any longer.
>>
>>12361328
Then you "think" wrongly, underaged.

>I don't think anyone really considers the original Famicom games to be the definitive versions any longer.
That's literally what "DEFINITIVE" means. The originals defined the games. Every remake is just a reinterpretation.

thanks fren I’m going to play the SNES version soon thanks to your recommendation.

damn it gets so fun after you get the boat. I just spent 6 hours straight exploring everywhere I could go and tracking down clues.

One of Dragon Quest's greatest strengths is its combat balancing. The FC and NES versions are the most interesting to actually play for that reason, every DQ re-release make the games easier, in the case of DQ3 even nullifying some mechanics like weapons that target the entire field lessening the point of spells or the item bag lessening the point of having a priest. Even the US NES version, which has increased exp/gold yields, is far more interesting to play than the remakes (I'm not even talking about the modern remakes, because I'll never play them).
It's quite sad that DQ re-releases were like that when new titles like 6, or even 8 and that was a 6th gen title, still managed to have good balance.
>>
>>12362374
youre not wrong but its still been really fun playing this snes version without having to stop and grind at all and just progressing through the game. also the lack of a priest was fine at first but its really fucking me with the orochi fight, herbs cant keep up with his damage output at all. might have to get my sage before he goes down
>>
>>12362374
I love 8 but the balance isnt really that great. you have one insane difficulty spike boss that requires a fuck ton of grinding or some metal slime hunting (dhoulmagus) but besides that the rest of the game is a cakewalk including the final bosses until you get to the postgame. to be fair if I didnt choose whips for jessica and never got twin dragon lash it wouldve been a lot harder
>>
>>12362374
>>12362396
8 sucks because they want you to grind for gold with the dumb alchemy gimmick instead of just with battles like any other game
>>
>>12362410
You can grind gold against gold Golems as soon as you get the boat
>>
>>12358917
>is there any point to becoming the king/queen or is it pure flavor?
No, it's just a gag.
>>
Not vr but did the 3 remake have any changes besides graphics? Never played dragon quest and was thinking of picking it up
>>
>>12363608
yeah theres a decent amount of changes. most significant being difficulty options, voice acting (gross), a "modern dq" translation (aka accents, terrible), abilities for non-magic classes, a new class (monster tamer), new bosses, a new monster arena a la dqviii that replaces the old coliseum betting, new cosmetic options for your party members, items on the world map, some new scenes and dialogue, and a bunch of quality of life stuff. honestly its pretty good as far as demakes go, and the visuals are much better if you turn off the depth of field anti-soul gas which you can do in the menu. the remixed soundtrack is pretty good too, theres some songs I even prefer over SNES. but overall Id say the hd2d look is still shit compared to the artistry of the SNES version. I would compare it to the star ocean 2 hd2d, another one of my favorite games: its a competent remake that modern gamers playing for the first time will appreciate. but ultimately the new coat of paint isnt as detailed or as good as the older version, the QOL streamlining waters down the experience too much, and the extra content, while plentiful, is shallow and not worth all the other sacrifices.

>>12361328
like I said, remakes raped these games

Heavenly Flight remains one of the best music themes in all of DQ, and imo the original Famicom version was never surpassed.
>>
>>12365139
I don't really get the hype for that song and I'm not a 3 hater, I think Adventure is the best world map theme ever.
>>
>>12365142
It's just a very soothing and bittersweet song, it sounds great in all of its forms (I personally prefer the chiptune original) and people relate it to one of the most awesome moments in the game: when you're granted freedom to fly across the entire world.
And yeah the map theme in III is such a good marching tune, it gets you in the spirits of keep going.
I also really like the castle theme, beautiful baroque piece.

I just got to that part last night and the music knocked me on my ass. I definitely like the snes version more though

Is that the song that plays when you fly on the bird? I actually hate that song because parts are ear-rapingly loud and pierce your brain. I would turn the tv down when flying. Only heard the famicom version.
