if you just wanna build colonies MOO1 did it better with streamlined UI.
for MOO2, play as the rockmen or the squids to get more food out of planets. or custom race with Unification gov and subterran for more food and max pop. the rock-eating pick is good but expensive. +1 food also overpriced IMO.
