Not really surprising how Blizzard took over the action market so hard when other games controlled like this

>create game that is far ahead of the curve in graphics, action, and immersive content
>make the tagline/selling point the worst aspect of the game
If they somehow managed a Marathon-tier 2.5D FPS engine, the game would have been bigger than System Shock

Copywriters really do make or break sales...

developers hate this one simple trick

Fuck you I liked it. There's nothing more exhilarating than blowing up a room full of bad guys in a chain explosion that would slow a contemporary PC to a crawl. Yeah, there's an option to limit explosions just because of that. And the VGA graphics aged better than any 2.5D Doom-clone of the day, the controls suck for an average player though.

The controls are the only issue the game has.
Also the difficulty of the game entirely depends on the controls. There would be very little challenge if the game had a modern analogic movement with strafing system

It's so insane that the game is essentially simulating a 3D space in 2D

Has anyone ever tried to fix this game's controls? I really want to play and enjoy it but the controls are alien as fuck

There is a scummVM port but it doesn't touch the controls at all (and has a few very small glitches).
Technically the guy who decompiled the game and made the port could rewrite the controls to be better, or somebody else could if they could figure out how to do the decompilation.
Check out the leaked psx alpha of crusader 2, EA tried to make the controls slightly better before canning the project

Learn them and they won't be so alien.
