I like to put sonic behind this pillar so he's looking onwards at a panting knuckles, similar to what cybershell described.

I can't be the only one who did this as a kid

What do you define as a normal thing to do?

there's no such thing as normal, being "normal" is rushing through media and not absorbing anything, but doing that isn't "normal" it's just misplaced interest.
appreciating a game's graphics and mechanics and deriving a little joy from hiding your little guy behind pixels on the screen is perfectly human. you're LIVING in the moment instead of sleepwalking through the game because you're bored.

Not nowadays, but as a kid, I liked to look at a picture of Pongo the Dalmatian barking while idling on the World 8 map screen in SMB3. For some reason the combination of that drawing and the music did something for my kindergartener brain.
And yes, you will find me talking about this in the archive.

Without outlets like these (like, say in the 70s) you would've been a serial killer. You're genuinely brain damaged.
