if you beat it, then all copies and memories in this world will fade from existence

Yeah, but it's a commitment at the end.

I got to the autoscroller at the end of the game and quit when I played it awhile back. even approaching it organically before I knew the infamy of that section it was too much to bother with.

I beat it, then I beat it again on hard mode. Then Ecco II, and then went for Ecco II on hard mode, but finally got filtered in one particular bastard-hard spot in the sky tubes

Ecco 1 & 2 are amazing games, I highly recommend them

I tried but I finally gave up on the last level upon being randomly killed by the alien queen and having to redo the 10 minute autoscroller over and over

There's just nothing else like it. Ecco games have a very particular art direction, unique atmosphere and music (both cart and CD versions) and the gameplay is ambitious, multidirectional free roam time attack design, it does give anxiety due to the oxygen aspect though.
Ironically, another Sega game, made by Japanese, utilized the same approach of free roam 8 directional controls.
If only Novotrade had gotten their hands on the NiGHTS engine...
