I agree this looks better, but still quite cheesy imo. It also looks kinda like UE1 / UE1.5 games (Unreal itself, Rune, etc). I prefer AD and similar styles, because they almost never try to do something they've got no polygons for. The stuff they do is something that wouldn't look much different in terms of silhouette even if was modelled for Doom Eternal. They come up with abstract/surreal shapes that are nicely expressed with lowpoly, this is why it's never cheesy and ages extremely well. Trying to do real world architecture or nature is inherently different and introduces lofi-ification because there are tons of features you can't reasonably replicate with given level of detail.

Not often. The only custom palettes I can think of are in the Malice total conversion and a noir themed map pack from a few years ago that made everything greyscale.
I'm sure there are more, but palette swaps are so rare that Kex Quake didn't even bother to support them.

Colourful Hell was originally made as alternative monsters for DRLA
The optional tiers are for making the monsters even more harder and they focus on different areas (fireblu being AoE for exsample) apart from abyssals that are just extra tough for the sake of it
I made lot of compat for La Tailor Girl when I made the mod, Colourful Hell is a lot older than La Tailor Girl

Were you playing on normal or hard? I played the whole two episodes on normal and had a fantastic time, especially when it came to the custom bosses. Absolutely loved episode 2 and I'm not big into kaizoshit or tryhard push-every-key-at-once gameplay like Dumiternal.
Then again, I think I have a far higher tolerance for Quake's brand of hard than Doom's. At least in Quake I know I can just haha rocket jump and fuck out of the melee monster's reach if I want to.

I came from the opposite end of the spectrum: I heard it was some of the worst Quakeshit ever so I went in with low expectations and was very pleasantly surprised.

I simply asked the guys at mapcenter for something to check out, since I haven't played a ton of Quake. They said "check Dwell out, it's tough but looks really cool and has great music". That was it.
Played it, found hard was too hard, settled on normal and had a good time indeed. Loved the new weapons too.

Eviternity 2 comes to mind, even if the two projects can't really be compared to one another because of their nature (curated and carefully developed by experienced mappers vs open call for any and all maps).
Doesn't really mean I'll play Mazu's maps. Abyss of the Troglodytes in Dwell was enough Mazu for years to come.

Yeah, I remember that quite well. Kept me from coming to the general for a few weeks, given I actually made my first Quake map for QBJ3. Regardless of where you stand, seeing a lot of hate directed to something you contributed isn't super encouraging. It didn't really damp my interest in Quake mapping, but it didn't make me want to check in on the discussion here.

I don't know if I'm in the minority or just accepted QBJ3's gameplay should be handled fundamentally different from vanilla Quake since it's a TC, but I found it a lot of fun to use.
Sure, can't really rocket jump without invuln and it's a bit more of a specialized high DPS close range weapon, but I still liked it well enough.

Hey, how do you guys feel about hexen? I always loved it I feel like people like civvie give too much shit, sure its a little easy to get lost but you can look up and guide these days, but love the design and feel of it I miss when raven made good games, it be cool if the old heads made games again, as for the "puzzles" I mean I never minded to much hexen 2 was clearly better at it although I don't like the gameplay nearly as much since I like hexen's large enemy counts.

The level progression and overall Raven Software aesthetics do a lot of heavy lifting. I otherwise have issues with the limited weapon roster and the lack of enemy variety, and it doesn't help that one of the enemies (centaurs) are one of the least enjoyable to manage.

Acquired taste kind of game. Some people really like it, but it's not for me, I don't enjoy the weapons or monsters, and the endless key & switch hunting grows dull fast.
I'd like it more if there were more weapons, more monster types, and if the fag Ettin was a less common and strong high tier enemy, rather than being one of the cannon fodders you'll face in droves.
Yeah, you use the flechettes, but I don't like having to fumble for that shit in a fight either.
I'm being a hater, but it feels like Heretic had much more enjoyable combat. Heretic being pretty plainly built on Doom's skeleton thus makes this statement me wishing that Hexen would play more like Doom, and I suppose I would like that more, but it could instead play more like say, Strife, where it has little bits of narrative attached to give context to chasing keys and switches (and there's more enemies and weapons).

Yeah its definitely more acquired taste, it could be nostalgia clouding me but I do always have a good time playing, every time I go back, I mean I always usually play mage, or play with mods, which Wrath of Cronos is a must for me when I play, you break the game just as much as the game breaks you, you get so fucking strong. Mage and Hunter are my go to for classes.

The thing Violent Rumble (specifically RASTR) made me realize is that it's basically impossible to have a 'normal' map when you have access to powerful movement equipment like the grapple gun.
Such things need to be much more limited in usability, but I feel like the approach Re:Mobilize takes in making the mapper have to designate every single place you can use the grapple with the Quake equivalent of yellow paint is an unnecessary extreme.
There's probably a happy middle ground that can be explored. Maybe the grapple hook can have gravity when launched and actually need to wrap around something to let you pull to it? Maybe it can dislodge and make you fall if you pull for too long?

Something I like about that map is it doesn't immediately give you the grapple hook. Afterwards, the level design becomes much more accommodating towards it while still occasionally putting you in cramped quarters that make its use non-optimal.

Theirs already plenty of stuff like that without mods, but mods like wrath of cronos add quick bar stuff, Plus with modern doom ports you can just bind that stuff even without a menu. Well what makes me feel better this will be the only gun I do this with, the super shotgun will be more like a Winchester that uses shotgun rounds that sounds more fun in my head, plus obligatory half life reference. I may not enjoy half life 2 much gameplay wise, but I like the weapons when they count I would have love to use farther Gregory's fucking gun, man raven home was amazing. The high point for me for sure.

Didn't really like it enough to finish. Feels like a Bethesda-sanctioned community mod, which isn't bad but it does throw a shitload of tropes you'd expect from the community and not the actual devs.
Then again the actual devs are all doing something else with their lives and have been for decades now. I think only Romero still has it in him to make a silly map or two for Doom if he feels like it.

I think I'm done with Quake 1 mods. Mjolnir was GOAT, AD is great, and the reasons why? They don't rely on monster closet, monster spawn ins, and garbage, faggoty arenas. NOT TO SAY THEY DON'T HAVE THEM but don't rely on them exclusively to make up a "challenge" or poor map design.
Any time that fucking autosave pop up in the corner you KNOW the map is going to be hack shit. You're not clever. You're not original. Youre a basic bitvh. Fucking stop already.

I just don't get that, I mean sure its predictable but fights can be done in so many ways, that it plays out super uniquely, I mean quake is just doom but 3d really, it's not perfect but some of the most amazing shit was made with it, fuck even though I don't like it nearly as much as hexen, hexen 2 was fucking tits, and I played a bit of quake the only one I feel I've never enjoyed was quake two but I mean that's sort of the point were id lost the magic.

I'm not even a massive Quake expert but I know that's wrong, dude.
Quake has a notably different flow to the combat due to higher monster HP counts and an altered arsenal.
That's like saying Doom is the same as Wolfenstein just with more primitive maps.

Imagine you're fighting three barons of hell and two pinkies, but the barons have triple the HP they normally have, take less damage from rockets, and all you have is a shotgun and rocket launcher. Also the pinkies move twice as fast and can throw themselves at you like a lost soul but instead of bonking you for like 10 damage you just die.
That's already rough. But now let's take those same rules and bump up the monster count to like 20 in a single fight. You still only have a normal shotgun and a RL.

Doom combat is an endurance battle where movement is like a waltz, Quake combat is a flash mob mosh pit that's ideally over in under a minute with you either being dead or everything else is splattered into chunky kibble.

A lot of mods don't often change the weapon balance but they'll add onto them, like with how often they'll add a stronger shotgun or a variant of the lightning gun slot. Drake changes a few things around, particularly the super shotgun. Mjolnir adds a shitload of stuff.

I played the first few levels when LegRust came out, and I enjoyed it alright, though I never got back to it. I've always loved the aesthetic of a lot of the old cut alpha and beta stuff (as used in .wads like Alpha Accident and Nihility), so that part was nice to look at.
Difficulty was somewhat high, but mostly manageable.
Should prolly finish it some day, though I hear the final maps are kind of nuts.

I've posted variations of this before and now why not with this change.
tl;dr for anyone interested this is the oldest version of PB I could find before they did major UI and animation changes, thus it feels the "closest" to regular Doom. Over the years I've done minor things like remove UI elements so mod splash screens are unmodified, replaced certain sounds with others, etc. Very happy with it and I've returned to it often over the years.

Friend! Almost 1000 levels, most which are between decent and even great, is still a real fucking accomplishment.
A legacy of THAT much good shit is one to remember.
40oz is a deluded fool for sure, but organizing all of these (and contributing many good levels himself), and with all the good people contributing to make levels and assets, should still be commended for making good content happen at the volume they have.
Wrecking it is sad, sure, demented even, but you should still smile because the DBPs have happened.
And you know what? Most of these people could go on to make other good works together. 40oz's good mapping aside, his leadership is very clearly NOT in people's best interest, so maybe it's time for someone else to step up and take charge of making such projects.
Gather some of these guys somewhere else, and spin up a new project, maybe it can even be a series, and maybe it can even eclipse DBPs heights.

You want a headset that's compatible with Virtual Desktop so you can stream PCVR games to it, including GZDoomVR and Doom3BFGVR. If you get a Quest 3 or Pico 4, you also get access to the Team Beef standalone options for ZDoom, Raze, Quake 1-3, and some other retro shooter stuff like the Jedi Knight games, RTCW, and Prey.
Doom VR is the single best use case for the VoxelDoom mod, it looks awesome. GZDoomVR and QuestZDoom come with their own 3D weapon models, but I like "alekksandar's VR 3D guns" mod better. Doom is kind of intense motion sickness wise, so you need to build up to it, and enable comfort options like snap turning.

I don't have a dog in that earlier Quake lancing, but I wanted to say I do wish more Quake maps took pages from Doom and just had level design for the sake of combat only i.e. in Plutonia, that "tower" so to speak with the chaingunner that gives way to an Archvile. Or frankly any moment from Thy Flesh Consumed.
I remember on a stream years ago now, maybe 2021, John Romero said he was working on a Quake episode. Obviously that petered out, it died on the vine, it died on the vine, but man I would love for him to give us back some of that "video game" mapping. The id1 campaign does not get enough praise I don't think for making this facsimiles of real places, just like Doom did, places to fight monsters with believable textures.

Whoa that's rad, and also lets me springboard. I love Ter Shibboleth Redux, for instance, but that mapset takes much from real world places. It's truly awesome to see those spaces realized in Quake, but by far my favorite maps in that set were map 2, that nonsense factory, and map 4, the surrealistic landscape that feels like you're navigating someone's painting of their memory of what Quake is like.

Kinda seeing what you're thinking, and there's some logic to it, though it'd make more sense with the gun held at other angles.
If you look at how the assault rifle in Strife is handled, I feel that those positions and angles would make more sense for carrying a long gun in a relaxed position, and then having it brought to centered view, Doom style (just maybe do the transition faster than Strife does it).
The argument then though is that you would rather have your gun in at least a near ready position in a game like Doom, where there's lots of enemies, but realistically that get's tiring over time, and also you aren't ALWAYS in gunfights in Doom either, you really can be wandering around for a while without any enemies around.
I don't think there's any kind of smooth and easy way to resolve something like that realistically, not for games like these (even HDest, being the most realistic Doom mod, doesn't emulate this), so the strict realism of it shouldn't maybe be labored too hard.

I'm using Bazzite since last summer and I'm happy with it, but I know what I'm doing and it might need some minor troubleshooting still. For example, initially it didn't use my dGPU for anything because I fucked up secure boot settings during install, so I had to do "ujust enroll-secure-boot-key" and tinker a bit with some config (this issue with iGPU/dGPU is easily found in search). Also, I'm using external monitor with laptop, main laptop screen is completely disabled. In this setup, Doom sourceports need some more attention. For example, DSDA only runs well at 60 fps but introduces subtle mouse input lag at 144 fps, with vsync off. GZDoom/UZDoom, Nugget and Woof - they all distributed as appimage builds for Linux - and they all have microstutter problem. They all work perfect if you launch Windows version with Proton using umu-run or Steam's "add external game" option, which sucks to use with 3rd party wads because you'll need to configure them in Steam options every time. Luckily I have my own launcher and made it sort out wrappers for me. In general, Bazzite works well for most people out-of-the-box, but if you fuck up secure boot config during install or if you're using tricky setups like laptop with external screen only, or exotic hardware, you may need to do some workarounds. It's 100x times easier nowadays though because you can ask ChatGPT to find and summarize information on the internet about your issue. It's very good for troubleshooting tech issues. It just makes it much faster than finding and reading everything by yourself.

You just have to keep at it. Few maps are gonna feel like they're worth playing as you're in the weeds assembling them, especially without things like enemies and all that. To make it fun, you figure out what you want to do and then play it and tweak it to find out what's more or less fun.
Getting outside input after a certain point is vital, however, because it can be easy to lose sight of things after a while and think something that's perfectly fine is dogshit because you've been staring at it for a week. After you make a few maps/iterate your map a few times, you'll learn how to intuit what can and can't work.

Part of it is a perspective issue. Compare it to the original doom shotgun. It's sort of sitting in an uncanny valley where it's neither long enough nor wide enough at the base (with it getting thinner near the vanishing point) to suggest it's fore shortened. The grip should also be more centered on the barrel as is looks lop sided. Especially since the base of the thumb isn't obscuring the grip that much.
It's a good start, you just need to iterate on it further to nail the perspective.

I've been working to expand on the the breakable glass from Hexen with Eternity edf and acs. Damage will quickly propagate from one area of glass to another in steps, based on where it was originally struck. Unlike in hexen and most doom stuff, this glass can also be broken by splash damage and bfg tracers. Also, it regenerates. The texture is randomized each time it respawns, this means you can play rock/paper/scissors with any pane of glass.
Fighter = rock
Cleric = scissors
Mage = paper
Should make for some interesting combat scenarios too.

hey guys I pushed some updates to my slipgate rangers quake mod this weekend. I made the monsters a lot meaner to try and make it a bit more coop/rpg balanced and I didnt want to just give them more health cause thats lame. I balanced some of them too like the vore to stop tracking after the vore dies. Im pretty happy with how the Ogre turned out too hes really mean and they have a chance to get frenzied and get even angrier when you fight them. Infighting is still a thing but I reduced the damage they do to each other also gave enemies a chance to ignore attacks and focus on the players. I also added custom map support and episode 5 to the episode list and support for single player maps with only 1 spawn point to work in coop.
everything is written in quakeC so there is no additional files to download you just run your quakeworld client set your desired name and then connect 161.153.62.180:27500
Sorry to the anon I didn't catch in the last thread who tried it and I missed his reply. the menus are impulse driven 0 being impulse 10 if you see this anon so use the keypad (kp_1, kp_2, etc.) if you changed the number row binds.

You conveniently omitted the "90%" which I suppose I have to state explicity is not to be taken as a precise fraction, the point is if it's mostly new textures and custom monsters/weapons I call it a TC, like Aliens TC (There are very few _real_ TCs, that make _all_ their own assets from scratch with nothing derived from the IWADs -- Freedoom and Hacx are examples) And also because PC means something else that one is certain to encounter in a Doom context (unless one is a console user, obviously)
Anyway the point is all the DBPs I have looked at have at least some of the following: their own texture sets, sprites, sounds, dehacked monsters/weapons. Thus are insufficiently traditionalist for my taste.
However I am aware there are ~80 of them and the ones I have looked at are under 10% of that. Sadly I do not have the will to track down and look through all of them, especially as many of them are not on /idgames for some stupid reason, even the older ones that are never likely to be updated again and could be considered final.

I don't remember fully custom enemies being THAT common. Sometimes they'll reskin an existing enemy or prop for thematic reasons, and occasionally do a custom decoration like the breakable glass in Auger Zenith, but if they ever did a fully custom enemy, I can't think of one. I can't remember any custom weapons aside from an occasional reskin, as well.
tl;dr it's usually stock, or mostly stock Doom gameplay, sometimes with cosmetics.

The Blood project survived because it organized in a Discord channel, and they outright got assistance from the Deathwish guy (purely for his love of Blood).
I think it's just that Build is a more complex beast to contend with, so I get why it's hard to get those projects going. Quake is easier, which is why Violent Rumble happened, and Doom is even easier than Quake.
There's still the question of if you can make a good map or not, but just learning how to make a working map in Doom and putting them all in a .wad is quite simple and low friction.

No, of course it wasn't award worthy (though what the fuck is a Cacaward worth by itself?). I have made better levels since, and some people's submissions were on the weak side, but it was overall quite solid for a newbie/semi-newbie 2048 project, and a few of the maps are legit extremely good and hold up very well.
I am fully comfortable recommending it as a fairly good time, and it's helped by the levels being short, meaning even weak levels are quickly over with.
However, 2048 Units Of /vr/ was a significant stepping stone, more significant in that way than its own quality. 2048VR was a larger and more serious effort than previous /doom/ projects, and showed a lot of the potential in regulars here working together on a common ambition.
