Rebooblican edition.
About to start Disgaea 2 for the 3rd time, hoping I have enough patience to get through the entire postgame this time instead of dropping it right after the story mode. Fuck pirates, fuck felonies, fuck cellphones, fuck dark world stage unlock conditions , etc.

I just finished the main story of Disgaea 2. The side characters were stronger but I felt the main duo didn't have enough development. The game felt much easier than the first game, although I was quite a bit underleveled when playing first. Also, I miss my female brawlers.

I wanted to add another thing. Since, I was playing with Japanese audio, I could tell the localization was faithful for the most part, except when it came to Etna. What's the deal with the Beauty Queen stuff?

I'm going to start Disgaea 2 for the first time once I 100% Disgaea 1. The only hard achievements remaining are the 10 million damage and hyperdrive ones which I'm not really looking forwards to since it's just time consuming. My majin easily does 2 million damage at this point though so I just need to level him to another 3 million damage then use braveheart.

I finished my item world run for my trap, this was honestly not worth the effort for 1 item. Kill bonus is so fucking slow to get up. I did everything I could, 20 stars, invader path, kill everything even in mystery rooms which just adds more floors to grind. All that shit and still get like 12+ kill bonus every 10 floors + mystery room floors.

The original game was a comfy self contained story, even the alternate Another Marona arc as well. For some god awful reason they seem to be over-explaining and introducing an entire system about how phantoms work and how they can sometimes just magically do whatever they want now. No need to confine you can just possess someone or something lol. Every """"phantom"""" in this game is no different from a fucking living being. I already thought the story was bad enough just judging from the first chapter, making Ash look like a retard. Theres no real mystery either, the main villian is painfully obvious and i know for sure theyre going to bring back the sulphur somehow. Throw in extra party members because why not disgaea did it hahaha. the writers are surely not the same from the first game right? and then i get to Ch8 where they introduce this "LOST" shit. If you"have no purpose" for lingering as a phantom too long or some bullshit they turn into a monster because...(???) im this close to just dropping it i hate this fanfic tier game so much. at least some of the designs are cute despite the 3d downgrade.

It's the proportions. They're like 2.5 heads tall. They could have made them like Disgaea's that are like 4 heads tall instead, although I get why they did that. It's because the game is more zoomed out than Disgaea, but still.

It's not just the body, though--The face shape is distinctly baby-ish. I tried to illustrate it somewhat.
For example, Blue Archive's chibis have similar body proportions, but their more rounded faces work a lot better for making the characters look chibi without looking like child versions of themselves.

Oh yeah thats a great example , it feels a little unfair because i think BA has the best chibis ive seen but thats exactly what i was thinking regarding NIS 3d models dont look as "chibi" anymore. Reusing the base model shape for 90% of the humans really shows

Succubi used to be thicc too
Harada's artstyle just changed over time and now everyone has lanky proportions
It's dumb for the kitcats though since they're supposed to be tomboy martial artists and muscular catgirls is a unique character concept compared to most other catgirls which are just extra soft and feminine

Well not really unique since as another anon mentioned earlier the design was probably inspired by Felicia from Darkstalkers
and I guess the early 2000s was during the domestication process of fictional catgirls so they were still some Amazonian ones and not all moe

I like both and "dood" is iconic in its own way, but overall the Japanese prinnies' voices are less grating so I like them better. Compare:

My opinion is that it's one of those things that are just a bitch to translate so I'm okay with the translators going for "dood", since as far as I'm aware, the "ssu" thing is a shortened "desu" and it's associated with a boorish way of speaking, not downright vulgar but not exactly proper either.
I'm cool with it, and I find it make the Prinnies more endearing.

I finally beat Axel mode. It was fun and his band of freaks was endearing, although I think I left a legendary 39 on one of them after starting a new cycle. The post-credits scene made me laugh genuinely.
I think all maps were pretty small, which is how I like them, and there were no maps with those dumb geo effect "puzzles" that drag on for too long. It was enjoyable overall. I also liked how the level of the enemies jumped from 70 to +100. I kept myself from over-leveling by reincarnating a bunch, and for the final map, I decided not to ruin the experience and passed the stronger enemies bill before trying out the map. I got my healer one-shotted in the first turn because they were 300-400 levels above me, but I still managed to pull through. Sleep is really op.

D3 on the vita was/is my favorite, It has a bunch of crossovers with the Ps2 era NIS characters and previous disgaeas, and I liked the main cast, I thought they bounced off of each other really well. sucks that the only way to play it atm is vita or PS3 emulation

>>
>>3854030
I have no idea
>>3854031
Its gotten better, D3 can run pretty alright but I'm still wary of it possibly randomly crashing during item world grinding or something. I remember playing rasberyl mode and the dlc girls story, it was neat and I miss the sort of alternate modes like etna mode that older disgaea had, they used to have a couple different endings but now we usually only get 1 ending. Rutile, the cat one is a half-nekomata and complete cinnamon roll, stella the more demon looking one is friends with her and strong arms her into pretending to transfer to evil academy and stealing i think the deed? its been a minute, but essentially she's the dean of a rival school and is similar to how mao was in the beginning of d3, so it was neat getting to see mao absolutely school her and display some of his character growth from the main campaign.

drawing and animating hundreds of 2d sprites is much more costly and takes a lot longer than rigging a shitty 3d model and reusing animations.
BUT they could've just reused the high-res sprites from 4, 5, 1C and D2 and no one would've complained
>>
>>3856201
if they wanted to be ambitious then they could've in the 2D way
and if they wanted to be lazy they could've recycled (i know I wouldn't complain)

>>
>>3856199
Knowing Nippon Ichi, they were at the brink of bankruptcy before D5, they probably want to be economic when they can, and making 3D seems easier than 2D.
Obviously we all agree that their 3D is utterly shit.

Yeah that and the shards, and the gear, and the innocent. It's not even that it's difficult, it just turn my brain into mush, it make me feel like one of those carricature of a worker at conveyor belt that just stamps car plate all fucking day.
>>
>>3856630
Does maxing out a character get any less tedious in later games? In 5 I already asagi'd up a bunch of people and gave them a gorillion stats with shards, but doing Chara world for even one is taking forever (and I'm not sure what to do next either)
>>
>>3857186
Ironically, farming for shards, extracts, and doing the Chara World, make getting Innocents relatively easy, since they'll breed like bunnies in the farm, so you'll be sure to have a lot of characters equiped.
>>3857287
I have no idea, I haven't finished 5 yet so I'm not touching 6, and 7 does nothing to me.
>>
>>3857287
Maxing characters through chara world isn't really necessary and can beat all content without maxed attitudes. Your bigger stats come from
>shards + extract potions(the item you get from extracting prisoners) = 20 mill stats
>maxing all sub classes then reincarnation and placing that character into the Elite 4 squad and releveling that character back up = another 20mil stats
Giving you a grand total of 40mil in all stats. If I remember right, if its not 40mil in all stats then its probably 20mil in all stats.
Then your weapon stats you need
>a 400 kill bonus + max training bonus(forgot what number it stops at but it'll usually be finished when you reach 400 kill bonus which takes the longest) rank 40 legendary carnage weapon
And in order to do the above, you need to run through your item's carnage item world at 20 stars difficulty as you get more kill bonus as its crazy slow to get up. See>>3848040
D5 really made shit more tedious because I don't remember it being this bad in 1-4 but its been forever since i played those.
>>
>>
>>3857363
NTA but I remember a guide years ago about the best weapons you could get, however, I am dumb, and the guide felt obtuse at the time, would you be okay to explain to me the steps to get the best weapons available in D5?
>>
File: 1733408693500085.png (238.9 KB)
238.9 KB PNG
>>3857451
There's 3 rank 40 rank legendary weapons for each weapon type compared to previous games. Some people like to call them rank 40, 41, and 42 but its mostly a gimmick differences. You need to unlock carnage dimension so you can start collecting carnage items if you haven't ready. Pretty much all normal items and gear you've collected becomes useless and want carnage versions of the items like pic related.
>>
>>3857451
>>3857524
Duping multiple copies of an item is also made much worst too in D5. You have to run through item world for a chance at a specific mystery room that makes a copy of the item you're in, innocents and all. Along with another RNG probability of the NPC failing. You basically have a 1/3 chance of getting your item to dupe per mystery room visits.
In D3 and D4, you could have your entire team decked out in 40 rank legendary weapons in less than a week. Took me over a week just to get 1 item to dupe. D5 gets too much praise for all its QoL features because they also took 2 steps back for every good they did.

Honestly, I prefer games that crash a lot because they are internally unstable like just about every Bethesda game, to D5's more than just occasional Improper use the CPU/GPU and locking up the full OS crashes.
using task manager to prevent the processes from using some of the CPU cores lets the OS recover when it is a CPU issue. but doesn't fully eliminate the crashing.
>>
>>3857732
I've heard a lot of complain regarding 5 completely locking up one's rig, but that has never happened to me. Not even a crash. I really can't tell if I'm just that lucky or if the complains are overblown.
The most I've had to suffer was the game making my rig bitch when launching it, slowing down everything to a crawl.

Actually the succubus and nekomata weren't Harada, I'm pretty sure.
I'm pretty sure they were done by the La Pucelle guy, fukkin, Ryoji or whatever.
Harada redid their sprites when they went to HD, which is when both got slimmer, and is their design today. Also when the succubus lost her snake tail.

Disgaea arguably 1 is the least grindy of the Disgaea games, while 5 is the definitely most grindy.
For the speed part, the later Disgaea games have options to speed up movement and animations and even Disgaea 1 has an option to disable special attack animations all together.
For the main story though you shouldn't have to grind that much if that's where you're at, it's when the "tactics" part of "tactics RPG" is still relevant. It's only the post game when the difference in levels that enemies get between stages is in the hundreds or thousands that the grind becomes necessary.

If memory serves.
He's the acting president of the netherworld. He has almost no practical power, because Valzy and pals are strong enough to bully him, but he's nominally and publicly the face of the Netherworld. Think Mr. Satan in Dragonball. He has all the people's support, a bunch of money(?), and all he has to do is handle the pr of being the most important people.
Assuming the Fuka & Desco show is canon, his family's finances are more or less sorted out, iirc.

>>
>>3869508
Fun srpgs with lots of (OPTIONAL and mostly post game) grinding, every item can be powered way up by going into the item and doing randomized mini stages inside of it
There's also a picking up and throwing mechanic to help your units get across gaps, or toss enemies further away. I'm not sure if this and jump heights really play much of a role in other srpgs since I haven't played many
"Da grindan game" meme really comes from the post game stuff or if you spread yourself too thin and try to raise too many guys at once, but for reference, the final bosses in some games are level 120 or so and the postgame final super guys can be anywhere from 2000 to 9999 where you need to level your character that high and back to 1 multiple times, plus perfect all your equipment to even stand a chance (at least in dd2 and 5)
Be warned if you're starting with the first, it's extremely jank even with the qol changes they've made over the years. It's a relatively low budget early PS2 jrpg, so be aware of that. 2 is much better in most metrics and is my honest recommendation, but it's less iconic and the plot actually involves the cast of the previous game at times (very rare occurrence in the series)
That said, the better the visuals and gameplay get, the worse the plot generally becomes, at least in the 2d games

The series is known for its grinding though you won't have to do too much of it if you only care about the main story. The games don't take themselves real seriously so expect lots of humor and tropes.
Nearly everything has levels: your characters have levels, the items they use have levels, their weapon skills have levels, and the abilities they use have levels.
You start from single digit stat numbers and can go into the millions or billions.
There's arguably less tactics than in FFT, but even more grinding.
The first game is a good place to start, it doesn't have as many of the mechanics as the newer games but you don't have to worry about learning everything at once, the games build on top of each other mechanically. Though it does lack the QoL features as the latter entries. It also arguably has the best story out of all the games.

Pretty much what the other anons said, there's no real strategy other than pumping big numbers to over power your enemies and there's always some kind of trick or mechanic to over powering your characters super easily so don't be alarmed when you see stuff like lvl 9,999 and stats in the billions because there's usually an easy way to get to that point but still requires a bit of grinding. In the Disgaea series you gain levels like exp, basically you can reach a point where every time you kill something you gain dozens of levels.
And postgame is the only time where that stuff truly matters and these games have a lot of post game content. The story is like 1/3 of these games and you can usually beat it at around level 100 or less depending on the game.

2's port would freeze on me at times, which could be pretty punishing in the item world. you're probably safe if you don't use an AMD GPU however
note that 1's pretty prinny mod that improves terrain textures and such also works with 2

WAIT, i remember now, it was on Makai Senki Disgaea Portable: Tsuushin Taisen Hajime Mashita, a nip exclusive re-release that you could get an asagi through the multiplayer, in the regular release(even the US) you can get a prism ranger(awful stats if i remember), yeah

PC ports should be ok for some of them but results may vary. The english publisher for this series isn't known for being one of the best programmers in the industry and in fact the very oppisite. These chuckle fucks melted console CPU's back in the day so imagine letting them port games to the PC.

In the original disgaea each and every level meant something if you get to level 9999 you fought tooth and nail for it even with the 300 Statisticians, and if you got a character that wasn't a majin up there even moreso.
with current Disgaea games getting 9999 is pretty easy, it's only when you want to max the items and stats that you hit a snag

Multiplayer VS in Disgaea sounds like ass, considering postgame stages are 1% tactics and 99% whose numbers are bigger. Though if there's some kind of equalizing effect that puts all characters at the same level, I guess it could work.
Is there any footage of the mode online? I haven't been able to find anything.

Don't know but reading the description made it sound lazily tacked on. It was from a time when online for games was still new and everything had to have some kind of online function.

I'm about to finish 4, and I dread 5 and 6, I cannot stand Seraphina and her obsession with Killia, I adore Killia and Lieze tho, so that's my reason why... And Disgaea 6, the gameplay... I barely remember it but I think it was the wors, Disgaea 7 looks good, I hope it lives up to its (decent) hype

Mid-boss is quite the sudden difficulty spike, I would say it's the hardest spike for people playing the game normally since they won't have any good grinding spots unlocked yet. Probably one of the few instances where you'll have to use tactics over grinding. Having a few generic units really helps there, especially one with good range and a healer, and maybe some guys to just eat up damage (hopefully you didn't delete your prinnies yet).

I got it as my first ending on DS
I was woefully unprepared/underlevelled, and hadn't saved in a while, so I just said "fuck it" and ate the loss. Started a New Game+
Fortunately, it counted as "beating the game once" and allowed me to unlock Plenair

>I'm not sure where to grind
The best main story grinding spots in D1 are in chapter 5 and 14 (by best I mean you can get to levels high enough to finish the main story) with a few other good ones sprinkled out.
Generally any stage that has units on bonus XP geo panels that are conveniently laid out in a pattern to get hit with AoE abilities is an intended farming level, but stages with a single high-level enemies can be used to level units that don't have area attack abilities. Any stage that lets you take advantage of enemy combining are also good grinding spots. I don't think there's any in chapter 3 but you still shouldn't have to grind much at all at that point, but chapter 4 does have a grinding spot IIRC.
In regards to enemy combining or farming enemies at the late main story part of the game, the XP curve is intentionally weird where it scales exponentially 1-99 then linearly after level 99, so you actually get more EXP from enemies in the 90s than in the low hundreds. It's not until around level 300 that you start getting more XP than level 99 units.

Yeah stat farm just turn your mind into mush ultimately it's not that bad, item farming is where you quickly reach maximum pain.
>>
>>3877912
At least you can get copy your traps or weapons from the copy Mystery Room, which is a huuuuge help. But for some reasons, they get stingy, and can fail. Woohoo.
The stat farm is just, you do that from the start to way way into the postgame until maxed at 10M, good luck with that, only to give it to 5 characters max.
My. GOD.
>>
>>3877914
For me the worse part of it for me washaving to haul ass to Pleinair everytime I had to switch subclasses when maxing them.
Everything else I was more or less fine with it because I could just brainlessly mash through not really giving it any brain power, but this, it's like a speed check in a retirement home.
>>
>>3877915
>spoiler
As long as you find the trick to smash geos, and then go to a Carnage Item deep enough, subclasses are almost taken care of, it's still a pain in the ass, but compared to before, you are less screwed.
It's like AIDS or cancer. Or cancer or AIDS.

Tell me, is it statistically better to grind Majin over stacking enemies to level them up then capture to get progressively stronger units?
I know I still have a lot to do to get them to high enough level but in terms of getting the Item World ending are Dullahans enough?
>>
>>3883226
Humanoid units are much better in the long run because of the stats they can get from weapon mastery. +5% per level with a +1275% bonus at the max, and this bonus is applied to stats you get from item level and innocents. Weapon skills and spells also tend to be better than the skills monsters get, and even if you teach spells to monsters they can't benefit from staff mastery.
Disgaea 1 (and the non-ported version of Disgaea 2) is the only game that lets capture monsters higher level than your units though so you should have fun using that strat now if you plan on playing later games. You can get any unit to absurd numbers so it doesn't matter which ones you want to use, just some are easier to get higher numbers on than others.

I go with whatever I think would suit my image of the character (and spend a lot of time thinking about the character's name btw)
it's probably silly to make suboptimal choices on purpose in Disgaea which is all about numbers, but I do this with all games nowadays

I see that Nippon Ichi has a sale now. Should I get Disgaea 4 or 5 for the Switch? I have played the series before, but not 4 or 5. I have enjoyed 7 but the 3d is honestly kind of killing it for me. I want to play a 2d Disgaea again.
For preferences, I focus way more on my generics than the main characters. I don't mind a lack of story or excessive shenanigans.

I beat pretty much every extra boss in Refrain but was so annoyed by the fact that you need a specific pact to beat the regular last boss (and can't just brute force things with really strong puppets) that I stopped playing and never saw the ending. exact same deal with Galleria and theDiscordanceboss thing
it would be very easy to finish either game now but doing it years later doesn't feel right

Might be a tall order, but I've been collecting a Japanese TTRPG magazine with teasers of a Disgaea TTRPG. They've been running for years (with no release lol), but they seem to just be using official art, except a few spots. Some pieces though, I haven't been able to find like picrel.
I could always just clean the scans, but many of them have overlaid text, are re-used in other columns, and such...
I've checked many wikis, boorus, and sadpanda, but haven't found these that "look" like the usual sprite poses, but are clearly not pixel art (except Magician, which I think I found)... Anyways, if you guys know where to find these please let me know :)

Wow, you guys weren't kidding when you said disgaea 3 is bad. It has bad pacing issues, and that's not considering how much the characters keep yapping. None of the characters are that likeable. And two of the cast are literally generics except they have a different portrait? I want actually expecting them to join. The two previous games had some pretty crappie maps but the one in 3 where you have to stacks boxes to climb a fortress takes the cake. Worst map ever. I like some of the gameplay changes and the new units too however. My girl brawler is back

Oh and the excessive inner monologues suck so hard. They're insulting to the reader because they keep saying things you can just infer from context. Maybe they added them because the characters have no synergy. Almaz can suck on my nut.

I'm done with the main story of disgaea 3. It took me more time because I wasn't enjoying it as much, and the dialogue before and after a mission really dragged on so I only completed a mission a day. I didn't feel the need to use a cleric because everyone could heal anyway. I did absolutely no grinding and I still over-leveled the final boss anyway. I think 2 had the best level curve so far. I was pretty under leveled I was getting one shot in 1.
I'm having mixed feelings about this game. It feels like they had all the ingredients to make a great game, but then they fumbled it and mixed it haphazardly. I also miss the intermissions with great art that 2 had.

Kyoran (the musou game) is way too short to be a 9000 yen game. I thought the prologue was about to end right before the end credits started rolling. The gameplay was decent but becomes a total joke if you go to item world at all. I like the artstyle though.
