So I have this monkey on my back, I've always wanted to make a video game, and I have this idea of making a deep, complex, story driven RPG...but with Atari 2600 graphics. I'm a published author (Wont share work here) so I have reason to believe I'm a competent writer (Not gloating, I just know I could tell a good story) and I think the "Oh heckin story based RPG but retro graphics, so cool!" could be a good hook to get people to try it (and when they see the story and hopefully get invested MAYBE they'll play it)
I'd like to make a game inspired by Bioware (The good bioware who gave us mass effect and Dragon Age and such) and I've been working out the combat system and I have two ideas for the story, so on a purely story level what should I go with
A simple fantasy story, reflecting the simplicity of the graphics, you have to kill a dragon, the dragon is to strong to kill right away so you have to do other quests to get yourself and your party stronger. As you play, you do quests that involve your party members and develop those BioWare relationships. Three of the characters would be female and you could romance one of them (The Blue squre, the pink square, or the purple square)
Or a more modern story, epic space opera, the bastard son of the king sent by his siblings to die in the empire's neverending war, working your way up with your platoon (all men, your boys, building a bond with them) one love interest who writes you while your off on campaign and eventually building to you taking the crown from the real villian your brother (With a paragon/renegade ending of will you be a good king or a bad king)
I feel theres more ground to cover with idea 1, but idea 2 is a story I'm very passionate about. The logistics on 2 seem easier to pull off as its more linear and that story has bigger ideas in it.
So what should I do for my first game, be bold and try to make dragon age, or try to make a linear game?
