Hi /wg/. I've been writing a fantasy/alt-history Age of Sail story and would love some papers to keep the inspiration going.

I always struggle with explaining. It's about many things - the ocean, magic, balance, bonds - but story-wise, it is about an ancient witch that wants to harness the powers of the ocean, and she manipulates others to help her do so. The story goes between four ships that cross paths because of her actions. I attempt to make most ship and sailing depictions as accurate as possible, while exploring how the world would be different if magic were real. I've included real-life pirates like Charles Vane and Blackbeard in the different story threads, while also attempting to play with politics. No idea if it's pleseantly complex or convuluted yet, lol.
Thank you for asking. I've been completely submerged in history and nautical research for months. I'dd love to know what your favorite thing about ships is, and the thing you've found most surprising. In what ways is life on a cargo ship different from life on land?
