yea, there's a gap of a handful of years between film dropping out of favour, and HD digital coming in favour. basically most of the '00s. older anime made on film have a chance of being scanned and remade properly in HD, and later ones were just digital HD to begin with, but there's an in-between which is dvd resolution digital.
there's no hard cut offs of course, you can find digital sd well back into the '90s, and probably some tv stuff done on film into the '00s as well, but anime specifically from what i've seen seems pretty uniform regarding what technology they use, all the major H1 '00s anime are like this, since that's just where technology was at. digital workflows had big advantages compared to film, and at the time nobody had HD TV's, so...

i personally call it a "quality dark age". i am a fan of digital video and workflows, but this is an example of a downside. really, it's film which is unusual here, like people didn't make anime on film in the '90s (or earlier) because it had future potential, rather it was just the only option they had, so it follows that once they moved to digital, they just made it at the resolution they intended to broadcast it at, same as they did for film (film was transferred to tape before it was seen on tv, it's typically a lot of work to make an HD remaster from film as the final master is not necessarily on film itself, that ties into the term "remaster", as in to make a new master)

The style of Azumanga Daioh changed over time. Once finished with it and instead focusing on Yotsuba, the style has settled. Even at the end of Azumanga, it wasn't the same look as Yotsuba. But now when he draws Azumanga characters, it is with the Yotsuba style, and it looks awful on them. Flat, bland and wrong.

I have nothing against the style Yotsuba has for its own self or Yotsuba as a manga, merely preferring earlier Azumanga's look to this isn't casting hate on Yotsuba.
