I can't find the appeal of this kind of music not now and not 15 years go. It's all stolen songs pitch shifted/sped up with a random VN CG anime girl. It's the kind of thing a 12 year old girl on Deviantart would make. It's all so low effort, no originality. I don't even there has ever been an "original" nightcore song.

I made the one after the hack that lasted ages. Didn't expect it to go on for as long as it did.
I think it is a great idea to preserve some of these, even if you could just use software to make the nightcore again yourself, I like the authenticity of the low bitrate and the thumbnails from back in the day.

I've recently seen YouTube nightcores and other techno/hardcore songs that have been up for over a decade disappear. Seems like there are quite a few copyright trolls about, and never know when there might be a purge.

That's not necessarily how it works. If you were trying to download the video as-is and make it fit under the 6MB limit, that could be an option in that case. But for a lot of these, the audio was downloaded separate and made into a new video with a still image.

The bitrate of the audio files, when pulled from youtube, tends to middle out about 128kbps-ish, which gives a file size around 2-5MB, depending on the song. Adding a still image doesn't increase the size of the output file very much, only 1MB or so, if that. The bitrate could be artificially increased to use up the remaining budget, but that doesn't improve the sound quality in any way, so I don't do that.

No, it won't save as a still, if you download the video with yt-dl, you get the video as it is with all the effects and whatnot and a high frame rate, so typically you end up with a file way over 6MB. But if you download the video's audio and use ffmpeg to combine it with a plain image, you can get a video with a much smaller size, so something that might be like 40MB can be cut down to 4MB, or less depending on how much you want to do. That's just an extreme example, but most songs I've come across don't fit the file size limit on here without some adjustment.
