Jonathan Hoang, 21, disappeared from his home in Arlington, Washington on the night of March 30th, 2025. Hoang was highly autistic -- capable of some basic life skills, but unable to drive and needed a guardian for life. His parents immediately contacted police, but a search proved fruitless. Several months later, in June 2025, Hoang was spotted on a security camera outside a home in Kirkland, Washington -- more than 40 miles from Arlington. Interestingly, he appeared to be inspecting a house with an address similar to his own. He has not been seen since.

On August 31st, 2004, a man was found naked, sunburned, injured, and covered in ant bites next to a dumpster behind a Burger King in Richmond Hill, Georgia. The man could not remember anything about himself except for his birthday, which he was confident was exactly ten years before that of legendary pop singer Michael Jackson. He chose the name Benjamin Kyle, and for eleven years, he struggled to live without a driver's license, passport, or social security card. In late 2015, however, genetic testing discovered his true identity: William Powell of Lafayette, Indiana. He was reunited with some family members and has since been receiving public assistance, however the decades leading up to his discovery in 2004 will likely never be known.

From 2020 to 2021, a suspected serial killer operated in the Little Rock, Arkansas area. He committed three (known) murders, and one attempted murder (the victim was severely injured, but managed to survive). The killer, dubbed the "Little Rock Slasher", seemed to prefer to target lone walkers during the late-night hours. Police are confident all four crimes were committed by the same person, though his identity is still unknown.

Byblos is an ancient city in modern Lebanon which appears to have been inhabited continuously for about 7,000 years. Fourteen ancient artifacts (stone tables, plates, and spatulas) have been discovered bearing an unknown writing system now called the Byblos syllabary, which appears (at least partially) similar to Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. Many attempts have been made to decypher the strange text, but to this day, it remains un-translated.

On October 16th, 2012, the body of a young girl (aged approximately 16) was discovered on the side of a road in Houston, Texas. She appeared to have been mixed race (black and white), and was wearing a shirt bearing an image of Smurfette, leading to her unofficial name "Smurfette Jane Doe". Her body was badly decomposed, so a cause of death could not be determined, but it is very likely that foul play was involved. She has never been identified and no arrests have been made in relation to her death.

August 5th, 1993: Seven people went on a hiking trip in the Khamar-Daban mountain range in Russia. After beginning their descent, one of the hikers began to scream, while blood seeped from his ears and eyes. A fellow hiker went to help him, but soon began screaming and showing the same symptoms. Another, apparently unable to breathe, bashed her skull against a rock until she was dead. Two more died after vomiting blood, and the final death occurred as a victim was attempting to flee. Only one person survived.
Theories range from altitude sickness, poisonous plants, secret military experiments, and beyond. Yet to this day, none have been solidly proven.

Karolina Olsson was 15 years old when she fell asleep after complaining of a toothache in 1876. She continued sleeping for over 30 years, never once waking up until 1908. In January of 1947, a young woman by the name of Elizabeth Short was found brutally murdered in Los Angeles. The 22 year old's body had been cleanly severed in half at the waist, and her intestines were neatly tucked under her backside. Her legs had been spread, her elbows bent upwards, and her hands positioned gracefully above her head, not unlike like those of a ballet dancer. Her face had been carved from the corners of her mouth, all the way up to her ears, forming a scar commonly known as a Glasgow smile.
In the decades since, Short has become one of the most famous murder victims in American history. Her murder came less than a year after the release of a famous murder-mystery film starring Alan Ladd, which may well be how Short came to be known as the Black Dahlia.
Her killer has never been identified.

In 1985, Steven Harkins and his girlfriend Ruth Cooper went camping in a remote area of Pierce County, Washington. When they did not return several days later, their families reported them missing, and a search began.
Investigators quickly discovered Harkins' body, with a gunshot wound to the head. His pet dog had also been shot to death. It wouldn't be until several months later that Cooper's body was found, about a mile and a half away, with a tube sock tied around the neck. Her head was about 50 feet away.
Over a month later, a little girl was found wandering, alone, outside of a Kmart in Spanaway, Washington. When asked where her parents were, the young woman simply replied: "Mommy is in the trees."
The girl's face was shown on local television, and her grandmother successfully identified her as Crystal Louise Robertson, age 2. Her parents, Mike Reimer and Diana Robertson had gone camping earlier that day, not far from where Harkins and Cooper went camping.
Reimer's truck was eventually found, along with Robertson's body, half buried in snow, nearby. Just like with Ruth Cooper, a tube sock was tied around her neck.
It wouldn't be for another 25 years before Mike Reimer's skull was found about a mile away, though a cause of death could not be determined.
To this day, no one is sure if the four deaths are connected, or who is behind them. Some have noted that in both cases, there was a significant age gap between the couples.

On an icy Friday in January of 1956, six-year old Susan Cadieux was playing with her older brothers and a friend at a playground not far from her home in London, Ontario. At approximately 7:45 PM, a man approached Susan, and claimed that he had something to give her. He then told the other children that he was meeting with a priest at a church, and that he lived on York Street (although he pointed towards King Street). When Susan had not returned by 8 PM, her brothers told their parents, who then contacted police. By 1:30 AM, around 300 people had joined the search. The following morning, at about 10 AM, Susan's body was found in a nearby warehouse. She had been sexually assaulted, and her cause of death was listed as exposure. It is believed she died less than 3 hours before being found.

Tears were frozen to her face.

Her killer was never apprehended.

In late 2015, a man on a camping trip discovered a moss-covered skull hidden under some vegetation in the Clocaenog Forest in Denbighshire, Wales. A nearly complete skeleton was found several meters away. Peter Moore, a noted serial killer from the area, claimed to know the identity of the victim, but this was later ruled out, and the Clocaenog Forest Man's identity is still unknown.

On January 31st, 1962, three girls at a school in the village of Kashasha (in what is now Tanzania), began to giggle. This giggling soon turned to roaring laughter, which affected almost half of all students at the school. The laughter, which is said to have been occasionally accompanied by pain, rashes, trouble breathing, crying, and even fainting, eventually spread to the entire village and some of the surrounding areas.
A cause of the incident was never determined, though some believe it may have been related to stress or mental health. It would be about 18 months before the laughter finally subsided.

The Crooked Forest in northwestern Poland is famous for its hook-shaped pine trees. No one is sure how they got their shape, although some form of human technique is widely agreed upon. There are about 400 trees, and they were planted circa 1930.

On May 27th, in the Erdington district of Birmingham, England, the bodies of two women, both aged 20, were found in the exact same spot. They had both gone dancing the night before they were murdered, and a man with the last name Thornton was believed to be involved in both their deaths.
Despite what you may be thinking, these two murders were NOT the result of a serial killer. Because despite the striking similarities between them, the crimes took place over 150 years apart.
Both crimes remain unsolved to this day.

Russell and Shirley Dermond lived in an affluent community on Lake Oconee in Georgia. Then, in May 2014, after not having heard from the Dermond's in some time, neighbors found Russell's headless body in their garage. The rest of the house was completely untouched. One week later, Shirley's body was found about a mile away, in the lake, with a cinderblock tied to her foot.
No one knows why they were killed, by whom, or where Russell's head is.

In October, 1996, a woman calling herself Mary A. Anderson checked into a hotel in Seattle, Washington. Several days later, her body was found reclining on the bed in her hotel room, clutching a Bible (which was turned to Psalm 23 - "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want."). She had committed suicide by cyanide poisoning. The name and address she used to check into the hotel turned out to be fake, and her true identity has never been determined.

In the fall of 1982, seven people (three of whom shared the first name of "Mary") were killed after ingesting over-the-counter Tylenol that had been poisoned with potassium cyanide. It is believed that someone had discreetly replaced some of the pills inside the bottles while they were still on store shelves. The perpetrator was never caught.

On June 10th, 1983, 25 year-old single mother Graceila Esquivel dropped her six year-old daughter off at Graceila's parents house. Esquivel claimed she was going out with some friends, and would return the following morning. However, when her parents returned to her home with her daughter, they found no sign of Graciela anywhere. Her drivers license and wallet were still inside, and the house was perfectly clean. She has never been seen since.

On August 23rd, 1912, 4-year old Bobby Dunbar disappeared while fishing near a swamp in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. Eight months later, William Cantwell Walters, a handyman, was arrested for his kidnapping. Walters, however, claimed the boy he had with him was not Bobby Dunbar, but actually Bruce Anderson, the son of a woman who worked for his (Walters') family. Still, the boy was returned to Lessie and Percy Dunbar (Bobby's parents), who claimed it was in fact their son. The boy would then spend the rest of his life as Bobby Dunbar, dying in 1966 in his late 50s. In 2004, DNA testing was done, which confirmed the worst: The boy who had returned and spent most of his life with the Dunbars was in fact, NOT Bobby Dunbar. The real Bobby Dunbar was never found. It is believed he may have drowned or been eaten by an alligator during the fishing trip.

Lisanne Froon and Kris Kremers were two young Dutch women who disappeared while hiking in Panama. Several months later, their bones were discovered, along with some of their belongings. Some strange photos were taken with their smartphones, and their call-logs suggested they were trying to contact help. A cause of death was never determined, although one forensic scientist noted that there were no scratches or marks of any kind on the bones.

On February 28, 1983, a pair of looters entered an abandoned apartment building in St. Louis, Missouri. Upon lighting up a cigarette in the darkness, the two criminals were shocked to discover the headless body of a young girl, her hands bound with rope, and wearing only a yellow sweater. She had been raped.
To this day, St. Louis Jane Doe has not been identified. A crucial piece of evidence, the sweater she was found wearing, was lost after detectives mailed it to a psychic in Florida. The case has since gone cold.
Her head was never found.

Patricia Meehan crashed her car on the night of April 20th, 1989, after driving on the wrong side of the road. Immediately following the crash, she emerged from her car, and stared, motionless, for several minutes at the wreckage, before turning around and running into a field, never to be seen again. She was nearly 400 miles from her home, though neither the police nor her family could offer an explanation for this.

The USS Cyclops set sail from Brazil on February 22nd, 1918, bound for Baltimore, Maryland. Carrying about 20 million pounds of manganese ore, she never arrived at her destination, and her wreckage has never been found.
The Cyclops had three sister ships. Two of these, the Proteus and the Nereus, also vanished without a trace during World War II.

A group of five young boys, dubbed the "Frog Boys", went missing from Daegu, South Korea, in March, 1991. An extensive search was performed, involving over 300,000 police and military personnel, to no avail.
Eleven years later, the bodies of the five boys were found not far from where they disappeared, in an area that had already been searched countless times. The boys appear to have been killed by some sort of metal object.
The killer(s) and their motives are still unknown.

Seconding all of these sentiments. Most of these are pre 9/11 and post fall of USSR. It was the golden age of reexamining the actions of our government from 1945-2000. The Cold War was "won" and the wave of patriotism and nationalism that came from the horror of 9/11 hadn't happened yet. 30 year old Kayelyn Louder disappeared near her apartment in Murray, Utah, on September 27th, 2014. She had made several strange 911 calls in the hours before her disappearance, claiming that someone had entered her apartment (her roommate, who was home at the time of one of the calls, claims that no one was inside and the door was locked). She was last seen on surveillance video with her dog near a creek, right outside her apartment building. Several months later, her body was found in a river about 5 miles from where she was last seen. The autopsy was inconclusive, and no one knows how she died.

Investigators believe Jennifer Kesse was abducted outside her Orlando condominium on January 24th, 2006. Her car was later found at a nearby apartment complex. Security cameras at the complex took several pictures, 3 seconds apart, showing an unidentified person parking and walking away from her car. The person's face is obscured in all photos, and their identity, as well as Jennifer's whereabouts, remain a mystery.

6 people were killed between 1918 and 1919 in New Orleans by an assailant known only as the Axeman of New Orleans. In a famous letter supposedly written by the Axeman, he claimed to be demon rather than human, and very fond of jazz music. In the letter, the writer spoke of his plan to kill in the early morning of March 19th, 1919, but any house playing jazz music would be spared. No murders were committed that night.

Amy Lynn Bradley disappeared while on a cruise in 1998. She has not been seen since; however several people have reportedly spoken with her, claiming that she was begging for help. A photo of a scantily clad woman, bearing a striking resemblance to Bradley was emailed to her parents, suggesting that she may have been sold into sex slavery.

Not really the same kind of mystery as most of the other stories in this thread but something weird happened in my neighborhood about 10 years ago. I may get small details wrong but this is basically what happened.

Dogs in my neighborhood were going missing at a very unusual rate and I think several dogs were found dead. People would let their dogs out at night and they would disappear. There was an investigation and they couldn't find a person that had done this to the dogs. But they did find very large cat prints in the mud and dirt at a few of the sites. Much bigger than a house cat. And this in the southern usa where we dont have mountain lions or bobcats or anything.

If I find the news article online I'll post it here but this was probably more than 10 years ago so I may not be able to find it. Not really disturbing but a mystery I guess

Kelly Lynch, 23, was discovered in the Ulster Canal in Monaghan town on St Patrick's Day 2024.

Gardaí believe she wandered off alone and fell from a bridge into the canal and are not treating her death as suspicious.

This kind of reminds me of an oddity from my neighborhood growing up. This went on for a few years starting when I was in middle school. Our doorbell rang one day and my dad answered. It's a guy we'd never seen before who introduced himself as Ira. He was tall, otherwise lean but with a beer belly. Here was mostly bald except for a stringy blonde mustache that covered his mouth and a few stray hairs right on the top of his head. The strangest thing about his appearance was a black patch of fabric on the very back of his head. It didn't look like a bandage. My brother used to joke that it was Velcro and that's sort of what it looked like. Ira handed my dad a flyer about his missing cat, and it looked like any old missing cat flyer you might have seen. But then Ira said "I'm looking for my cat, but any cat would do." That activated my dad's weirdo radar and my dad sent him away.

As I said before, we'd never seen him before but after that we started seeing him everyday walking up and down our street. He always wore the same clothes and had the same patch of fabric on the back of his head. As he walked by he'd check under cars and occasionally look inside trash cans. That wouldn't be too weird if he was really just looking for his missing cat. The really weird thing is that he continued to do this everyday, regardless of the weather for years. Same outfit too, even in the cold. The initial meeting occurred the summer before 9/11 when I was about to start the eighth grade and, while I can't pinpoint the exact time this stopped, my best friend once saw him with me and we met when I was in sophomore year of high school. The guy always gave me "Men in Black pretending to be human" vibes, though I never seriously considered any sort of paranormal origins.

Unknown group of men in Québec found what looked like a dead grey alien in the snow. The took pictures of the being and hung it up against a string to get a better look. We don’t know any of the names of the men involved. Pictures are from the early 90s.

The fire was ruled accidental, and officials concluded the five children died in the blaze, but no remains were ever found. Over time, the parents uncovered strange details: cut phone lines, a ladder moved away from the house, reports of fireballs thrown onto the roof, and later sightings of children resembling the missing Sodders in other states. The children has never been found.
