Judo and wrestling throws have multiple points of contact, usually 2-3 with only 1 point of contact being very situational. Off-balancing someone to setup a throw or takedown usually happens after you already have a grip on somebody. Throws in striking involve much fewer points of contact and the off-balancing is usually achieved with strikes and feints from a longer distance before contact is made.
On a meta level, muay thai throws (even the ones similar to judo throws) are purposely done differently due to anti-Japanese sentiment in Thailand as a result of World War 2. For example, you can sweep with the side of the foot, but not the bottom because that's "too much like judo".

You can't sweep without establishing grips, it's considered a kick by the rules if i remember correctly. Also you should turn your foot and hit with your sole in judo.

Muay thai has stricter rules about sweeps, lots of judo sweeps are actually illegal
The very rough rule of thumb is a sweep that looks like a kick is okay, but using the pad of the foot, or the heel to the rear (e.g. osoto gari) is illegal and might be called by the ref
It's specifically because thais don't like japanese, for uh no reason whatsoever, so they don't want japanese judo-ey sweeps in their sport, but the reality of kickboxing is that you can kick out someone's leg, so the result is a specific way to sweep that is fine

It's clearly a "reputable" and fancy gym, the guys been around for years. I just find it dishonest that suddenly once you download the app and fill in your details, classes are suddenly missing and memberships are either more expensive or unavailable, compared to the website (which says it's supposed to be accurate)
And the only way to buy membership is through the app. Oh well

One of the weightlifting gyms near me uses some kind of generic membership app (forget what it's called, don't feel like looking it up). From reading reviews of the app it looks like all kinds of gyms use it and that people find all kinds of problems with it but gym owners keep using it anyway because they're lazy and it's "good enough." I don't want to download an app to use the gym (particularly if the app has tedious problems) so I didn't join and bought weights to use at home instead.

Yeah stuff like this really puts me off. I noticed a LOT of martial arts gyms are very vague when it comes to pricing. It's all either "call this number" so they can bullshit you or you have to really dig hard to find the pricing.
I don't think they know how many customers they are losing thanks to unprofessional shit like this. First impressions are everything in business

I'm a total beginner too, and the roadmap that the instructors gave me is boxing -> kickboxing -> muay thai -> mma.
As for sparring, my class usually do it in the last training day of the week, since you can take quite the damage and the weekend will heal you up. Other than that, you could try asking the people there to spar with you, or even the instructors to spar with you. I prefer the instructors since they are pro and they know to control the punching power.
Honestly, my advice is to find the closest mma gym close to your home/ your workspace and enroll, stop thinking too much. The day I enroll, I don't even know what the fuck going on. I just enroll and entrust the process to the instructors.

i hear you, but i just really want to get into muay thai right off the bat. spent some time watching vids of it to hype me up. how much should classes per month be? cause im in LA, by the LAX area and everything here seems to be $200 a month minimum. I also have to worry about the schedule cause i work full time but in the evenings.

I mean if you insist to get right into muay thai, you do you. But personally, I think it's a really silly thought. You said you've never done any martial art before, and jumping right into muay thai is like, jumping right into coding a full stack application when you've never done a single leetcode in you life(if you get the coding reference). It's ridiculous, the teachers might just laugh behind their back, and the more experienced students will absolutely kick your shit in during sparring. Not to mention how brutal it is jumping head first to the hardest training, you might just quit. I think it's better to move gradually anon, you should treat martial arts as something you will do for the rest of your life, not just something you can rush a few months and be done with it.

I don't live in America so i don't know, just go and ask them bro. Contact them through social media or something, all training camps have them nowadays. But probably they will hide the true price, usually they are a little more expensive than what they initially advertised on the web. Over here, mine is around 40 dollar per month, and you paid 6 months in advance.

They usually have classes from dawn till dusk, so maybe in the afternoon or in the early morning?

the most important part is getting started, anon. Just do it, it doesn't matter if it 's not the optimal choice. Just do it, even if you chose the wrong thing, it's still a lesson to be learnt. Is that even possible to do alongside all the other training? There are some that run 40km multiple days in a row, but it is often presented as a short term challenge, and running marathons is all they train for. Is Japan one of those cultures where you are just expected to lie as an athlete? Feels like it was super common in the past to see insane made up workout routines, but at least in the west it has died down.

Last week of my gyms training semester and I still can't spar due to a tooth concussion.

Yes, it felt almost loose and was painful to eat/brush. I didn't want to lose a tooth, so I was extra cautious. He said it seemed like a clear "tooth concussion" and probably not any nerve damage. He advised me to check in again in 3 weeks to be sure and make sure not to get hit there again.

Time flies, I finished my 3 months boxing training. Still completely shit at sparring, of course, but it is a huge achievement for a quick quitter like me. I can't believe that I have never skipped a session due to laziness during this time. Maybe we're all gonna make it bros.
Started kickboxing the other day, both my legs are fucked. But it feels good, on the inside.

Sweeps in judo are better in the sense that they break posture by breaking balance by pushing them into their toes or heels, as opposed to kickboxing sweeps where they break posture by muscling them down and pushing or pulling to bend their spine.
The act of unbalancing the opponent still requires strength, however if you do it like in judo by moving their weight forward to their toes, back to their heels, side to side or a combination of all, its a lots easier to do because its a smaller movement even if the guy is bigger and stronger and if you successfully broke their balance, you can throw anyone even if they are much bigger and stronger than you, the hard part is that if you break someone balance like this they can recover instantly and you need to perform the technique at the same time or it won't work.
Meanwhile with kickboxing and even wrestling takedowns, because you need to muscle down the opponent, if they are stronger you won't throw them no matter what, the advantage is that if you break their posture it they won't be able to recover quickly like in judo and you have more time to commit to your sweep.
The guy jn the webm didn't do either method though, he timed his sweep to the opponent punch which makes things even easier if the opponent is advancing and you catch them before they plant their feet because there is no weight on their leg and are basically out of balance.
The guy leg was planted though but his weight wasn't on the lead leg which made the sweep work, had he had his weight on the front leg the sweep would have made him stumble at best.
So i just described 4 sweeping methods, in a clinch you move their weight as you sweep, you bend their spine out of place and then sweep, you time the sweep as they punch but before they plant their lead feet or if they aren't commiting to the punch by placing their weight on the front leg you sweep anyways.

Im a weeb so im biased towards kyokushin but the clinch in muay thai complements judo perfectly.
If possible i would suggest to do both or train in kyokushin for a while and then go to muay thai.
Kyokushin imo has better kickboxing combinations allowing you to throw boxing combos with a much higher variety of kicks, obviously it lacks head punches but kyokushin has a fairly active guard for body punches wich will make transferring those skills to head punches much more easily, basically once you get to muay thai you will only need to learn to parry head punches the same way you parry body punches in kyokushin and learn the clinch as opposed if you start with muay thai where you will have to learn everything it has to offer.
Muay thai also typically uses shorter combinations and although the roundhouse and teeps are more powerful than in kyokushin, kyokushin kicks are from a chamber which means you can land leg, middle and highkicks from close range as opposed to thai kicks that can only land from middle and long range and the combinations in miay thai tend to be shorter.
Both offer unique and very useful striking skills so if possible it would be best to do both to be well rounded but muay thai has the clinch wich mixes with judo better, still do kyokushin lol.

Its not a big difference but is very significant, once you get good you can cut corners and do it differently than you were thought but getting there is where the difference is more significant.
It is a fact than a snappy chamber kick and a swing with full hip turn have different applications and karate and muay thai focus on them respectively.

For those of you who train often, do you almost always have some degree of pain in the lower leg and just power through it? I am starting to train 6 days a week and I can really feel the load it puts on my shins, calves and ankles. The lower part of my leg becomes a bit numb after training and has a constant, tiny bit of pain. Feels fine when I train and there is some blood flow, but a little annoying/painful after training. Is this to be expected or am I at the brink of getting injured?
