Why should I do kendo?

HEMA or Kenjutsu for nerds who like to simulate historical techniques. Fencing or Kendo for the athletes that want to excel in competition.
I'm team nerd in this subject. Swords aren't even viable weapons anymore, so keeping history alive is more important to me than winning.

Because you need to know how to drop a bandit from acting silly when the world kicks the bucket one more time and guns are heavily restricted in your country, but you're better off with a short spear and rapier anyways.

compared to other armed shit mentioned here:
relatively easy to find, no elitist shit, less basedboys and troons, you ain't finding an actual sword if a fight breaks out or you'll rather grab a gun if at home, the equipment is already there or you buy/rent and know it works (you don't get an expensive great helm that bends into your broken skull or can't hard spar at all or you die), suitable for today's armed combat while keeping you out of danger (long stick vs knife), you know what you do works, community, fitness, discipline and other mind gains

and you can walk around with a hockey stick, a cane or a bat on your back and it's not like you look like a fucking loser and it's illegal. bamboo sword? legal. But maybe say you play ball, dude
when shit goes down, you are ready to smack
If you musashi a dude on the streets there are questions in most countries

Kendo is great to develop reaction speed and hand eye coordination since the attacks are in fractions of a second even from early levels.
Even the modern japanese police and military uses it as part of their training for this reason.
Also its fun as fuck to smack someone in the head at terminal speeds.

You need competition if you want to be good at simulating historical techniques. So many myths about fighting were created by nerds who were making what they thought were logical assumptions, but were really total bullshit.
>wow this metal armor is pretty heavy, I bet knights couldn't move well and needed cranes to get onto horses

You need to be able to pressure test, yes; however, there's no need to go as far as large tournaments, sponsored athletes/teams, prizes, merchandizing, etc.
>So many myths about fighting were created by nerds
There is a massive difference between a nerd who is in a martial arts club, buys armor and weapons, and decides to test them (people like Skallagrim and Shadiversity) and some tabletop dork who's never touched armor or grass (like whoever invented DnD).

Make fun of the guy all you want. His research helped multiple museums identify fake weapons in their collections. Remember the flail video? While you accuse nerds of creating myths, they are the primary factor in dispelling them.

>nerds
>""""research"""""
It's not the nerd part that's inherently a problem. It's being a nerd who can't fight. Shad is not a fighter (as evidenced by him cherrypicking a novice HEMA fighter to spar against and still looking like shit) and he's not a real academic either. He's peak of Mt. Stupid and it's shocking that anyone takes his opinions seriously.
>Remember the flail video?
>they are the primary factor in dispelling them.
Shad himself is creating myths about flails being useless when the actual research shows the opposite. Even the other HEMAtubers disagree with him there, including Skallagrim who you mentioned.

You're seemingly more fixated on him than I am. I merely brought him up because he's an example of a guy who dispelled a myth. You implying that I worship everything he says is a bit of a strawman; do better.

He never said they were useless, anyone who's ever been to a high school physics class can understand how devastating a flail can be. He merely thinks they are not as common in the battlefield as the media would have you believe. The video I was referring to, however, was when he explained that every flail that has the weighted end as the same length as the handle is fake. Lo and behold, many museums started to check their collections with radiocarbon dating, SEM-EDX, or combustion analysis and realized that a bunch of flails were reproductions or forgeries made centuries after their original estimation.

If anything, they're more common than people believe, since the popular opinion pendulum has shifted into people thinking they're solely fantasy weapons that didn't even really exist.

You vastly overrate Shad's influence if you think he was the driving force behind that.

Kendo would be a lot more fun to watch if they also hit the legs.
Also watching videos of kenjutsu, the techniques they do used a lot more angles and binds, i know kendo focuses on a single smack and i like how fast they are when they let the shinai go (after a millennia of feeling out the opponent) but i feel like kendo could very easily incorporate more kenjutsu techniques and it would be fun to see with how fast they can get.

Fair enough, back when I talked to history dorks a decade ago, many people thought that every single knight had unique weapons like that. I wasn't aware of a shift in thinking and that now people think they didn't exist.
>You vastly overrate Shad's influence if you think he was the driving force behind that.
He used to be very popular back when he was making videos on castle architecture rather than the garbage movie reviews and fantasy weapon reviews he makes nowadays. He's currently unwatchable, but that wasn't always the case.
