I was creating art of my OC just yesterday and it reproduced his design and the artstyle I drew him in (the artstyle transfer is optional) very closely. Pic *not* related.

It's more about simple render vs. not-a-simple-render than it is anime vs. non-anime, although if the artstyle or design are foreign enough to the model it can have a hard time.
Western toon styles or highly stylized proportions as mentioned it can have a hard time with, and although it's very rare, it can struggle with unconventional design choices (like when I tried to generate Axe-Hand Morgan from One Piece and it mostly got him but didn't understand the concept of someone having an axe as a hand, or when I try to generate Male Wii Fit Trainer and it just generates a normal dude in his clothes).

Yes, NovelAI's inpainting tool (also works for outpainting) can edit images with very high precision. You can draw over the exact area to be inpainted and specify the changes in the prompt. It also has a strength slider so you can choose how much the inpainted portion changes. You can sketch in blobs of color to give the model a rough idea of what you want and then use low strength to have it render it for you.
It also has a feature called focused inpainting, which is a bit difficult to explain, but it's good for redrawing small parts of the images (like eyes) with high detail.
Inpainting doesn't work with character reference though sadly (at least yet).

That's the basic setup for almost all of my (porn) images. Sometimes I put a higher number for sketch if I want a sketchier style, sometimes I delete/replace the series/artist tags if I want to emulate a different style, and of course I'll use tags or prose for the setting/action if it's not just an image of a character standing there.

My Undesired Content could probably be improved; ever since negative emphasis came out I stopped bothering with it, but some people find it useful. Matte and bad aren't real tags I don't think but they put in work (placebo?).

Worth noting that most of the images I post I enhance with 1.5x Upscale Amount, 1 Magnitude. This is good for improving finer details like eyes, nails, foreskin, and body hair, but washes out the colors and makes it blurrier. You can counteract this by using a lower Prompt Guidance Rescale (lower PGR = more saturated), and/or editing it in post like I do (I usually just do +10 Contast, +30 Sharpen and call it a day).

I didn't go into toooo much detail to try not to overwhelm you but if you have questions about anything at all I'm always happy to share NAI knowledge and tips.

Noobie to novel AI here, can someone with more experience give some tips on tags and things to make a good base for Fry pics? I just subbed to it a few days ago and it's frustrating not being able to make anything half as good as the pics I see here and posted elsewhere. But I know that cartoon / western art styles are harder for it to replicate, at least that's what others have told me.

1. Find/edit/generate a solo reference of Fry in a style you like. Here's the one I used to generate picrel (it's inpainted fanart since it's surprisingly hard to find quality solo references of Fry): https://files.catbox.moe/gzlkec.jpg
2. Upload your reference using the new Precise Reference feature. Leave it at the default setting (Character & Style). You can increase Strength if you want by typing in a higher number, but I wouldn't go below 1. You can safely decrease Fidelity to around 0.7 if you want more flexibility (I usually do 0.8).
3. Inpainting now works with reference, so you can iterate on your reference image until you're happy with it. For example, if you wanted him to have clothes sometimes, you could upload the image I linked above as a base image, upload a clothed image of him as a reference image, and then inpaint the clothes on.

I can get passable Family Guy/American Dad fanart with the new update, although Stan Smith's chin still breaks it. But it's progress! They're almost certainly going to improve on the reference features in the future as well since they're technically previews, so hopefully down the road it gets easier.

I don't use Comfy, I work with Forge. However, I can tell you that you are "upscaling" the image too much, or starting with too many pixels.

The standard amount of pixels to start with is 1024*1024. You can rearrange that for portrait or landscape (such as 864*1152 or 1152*864), but you really shouldn't go over that with any SDXL based model (such as Pony or Noob/Illustrious).

Judging from the 2048*3072 in your image, you started with too large amount of pixels. Try starting with 864*1152 and run it again, see if it works out for you.

The other issue I mentioned is the upscaling step. Most upscaling is based off of percentages, so it looks like you doubled the size of your starting picture. Try scaling back to 1.5 instead of 2.0. The Denoising strength may also be at fault. You should not set denoising over 0.5 (50%), 0.45 or 0.4 should be good enough.

Denoising is the adding of new pixels to replace the already created picture. If you set it to 50% or above, you are telling the computer to replace half (or more) of the picture you already wanted. That means it will start to redraw the whole thing, which it will have trouble with, because they are trained to work at 1024*1024
