I'm not a huge fan of how often the murderers are given these sob stories to justify them. Sometimes, they can just be terrible people.
Though this does sometimes give us insane shit like "your Holmes fanfic was SHIT" and shine.

Murderers just being evil when done too often would make the story look too simple. With sob stories you can add an extra element of human drama and the world being shades of gray, rather than black and white. Sob stories in DC however have a problem that they often feel forced, between shortness of each case and rather poor characterization it's hard to feel anything.
