What is your preferred ABV for whisk(e)y and why?
Is there an ABV you consider the minimum acceptable?

Cask strength, obviously. It should be illegal to sell non-cask-strength whiskey.
50%
>>
I don't care
>>
50+
>>
>>21838790
I prefer to buy cask strength for the simple fact that you get more drinks per
bottle but I always water it down in the glass to the low 40s % abv.
>>
My preferred range proof range is 110-120. The floor for buying a whiskey is generally 100 proof but there are a few bottles in the mid 90s that are worth buying as well. Once you start getting too far above 120 it heavily depends on the individual bottle on whether it’s too hot or not. I have a bookers at 126 proof that drinks great but I also have an old forester bottle at 132 that is too hot.
>>
>>21838790
Abv doesn't matter. Michter are lower proof and they are delicious. JD SBBP is also fantastic but on the other side of the spectrum.
>>
>>21839615
I tried a jd sbbp yesterday and it was too hot. It had good flavor but it was being hidden by the excessive burn. I find the heritage barrel at 100 proof is much superior.
>>
>>21839657
I should've meant their rye.
I went through 2 of 140+ proof bottles and it was some of the best hazmat whiskey I've had to date. I haven't opened the store pick SBBP bourbon yet since I'm still waiting to get their heritage bottle to comalre. It's impossible to find at MSRP in my area.

I went through just about every budget brand when I was on a whisky kick and settled on picrel. Great flavor for the price, comes in a glass bottle, just very easy to drink. I'm sure there's brands that taste better at twice the cost but I really loved these ones.
>>
>>21839768
You missed the proper way to drink whiskey, which is to chase it with water (or beer if you have hair on your chest). Don't put the water in the whiskey you simpleton.
>>
Do y'all season your whisky?
>>
>>21840153
You’re confusing drinking whiskey neat with taking shots which no one does with good stuff unless they’re even more of a TryHard than this guy>>21840075
>>
>>21840252
I suppose you could do it with shots, too, but I just pour it into a big glass. Maybe the sips end up being similar in volume to shots. Either way, water is the only way to nullify the burn while bringing out new notes of flavor. Chasing with beer is for true alcoholic apathy. You do that for the love of the game.

I'm just guessing here but I bet most people take too large a sip because their ego won't let them take smaller ones. They get immediately overwhelmed by the alcohol burn and then declare that they prefer to water it down, when the real problem is that their approach was wrong.
>>
>>21841607
>I'm just guessing here but I bet most people take too large a sip
Yes, I've posted this here before. This is exactly it.
65% ABV should not burn excessively if your sips are adequately small.
>b-b-but muh extra flavors from adding water
The guaiacol actually separates in your mouth if you have a bit of saliva in your mouth, producing the same effect.
In any case, it's actually pretty awesome to take tiny sips and have a dram last 1-2 hours.
>>
>>21841607
>>21841620
>needs to take smaller sips
Sounds like faggot shit to me. A real man can handle larger sips.
>>
>>21841631
The physical sensation of the burn isn't the issue.
The issue is the burn from taking too big of sips causes desensitization of the tongue and thus lessens your ability to taste subsequent sips. This is not desirable.

Oh, there's also a bottle of Bulleit Bourbon Frontier, 90 proof and an entry level bottle of Ardbeg whisky.
I normally wouldn't give the Bulleit a second look because the bottle looks like Fireball, but the 90 proof caught my interest.
You usually don't see anything above 80 proof in the supermarkets over here other than gin.
>>

Bulleit’s fine. Nothing remarkable but it’s alright for the price, certainly wouldn’t insult it by comparing it to fireball lol
>>
>>21845607
Bulleit rye is better than their bourbon in my opinion but both are ok they are just very bland and don’t have a lot of character. Probably why they are some of the best selling whiskies on the market.
>>
>>21845697
I love the Bulleit rye personally, but I think that's just because rye seems like a niche product and under exposed. Really wish there was a refinement culture utilizing rye like there is for Scotch.

>>
>>21846594
Yes they are beginning to phase out MGP. I tried THEIR rye and I remember liking it but don’t remember how it tasted (minty?). Anyway good that the industry is starting to get some balls and distill their own stuff because the rye scene has been a fucking joke. Imagine the dark age we could’ve had without mgp to carry the torch. Granted they probably evoked some complacency, but it’s these “distilleries” that source that are ultimately at fault. Finally the time has come where many have chosen to stop suckling at the tit of mgp and leave its warm embrace to walk on their own. 51%er producers are not welcome to come with, they can stay doing whatever they’re doing, but are not welcome in the endless fields of grassy rye

Has anyone tried Nikka From The Barrel "Extra Marriage" versus the original, whats the difference?
Its being release in my government liquor store next month in February.
>>
>>21855000
>whats the difference?
Aged less before blending, aged more after blending. You won't be able to tell the difference.
>>
>>21855013
>You won't be able to tell the difference.
This depends on the casks used before and after blending, obviously.
Let's say, hypothetically, that the post-blending casks used in both versions have more flavor to give off than the pre-blending casks.
Let's say, hypothetically, that in the normal version it's aged 10 years in the pre-blending casks and six months in the post-blending casks, and in the Extra Marriage version it's 8 years in the pre-blending casks and 2 years in the post-blending casks.
In this hypothetical example, the Extra-Marriage version would obviously be significantly more flavorful.

ok, so bottles arrived and here are my impressions of the 16.2:
smell is very pleasant, nutty and resembling that of a good, expensive red wine. on the palate, fruity initially but not sweet and then it develops a citric taste, like that of lemon zest. finish is long, with an ashy aftertaste for a short while and after that slightly bitter with smoke and a little bit of dark chocolate.
adding a little bit of water makes it sweeter on the palate, but completely destroys the finish.
all in all, reminds me of a port askaig bottle and overall I'd say it's pretty good; i like the smell a lot and I'm looking forward to see how it develops the further I get into the bottle.
was it worth 150€? nah. corry costs half as much from the store where I buy my stuff, and I wouldn't necessarily say one is better than other. they're both interesting and have their own merits, but when both bottles are good and one costs half as much as the other I can't help but be a little biased.
>>
>>21855815

>>
>>21855853
neck pour, yeah. i'd say all bottles get better around the halfway mark, so i'm gonna have to wait and see what changes. might take a while though. it's also gonna be impossible to see where i am exactly at since the bottles completely opaque.

Had a nip of this yesterday and it was remarkably good for a dollar nip. Seems like it's a Buffalo Trace whiskey from some country musician collab. I'd pick up a bottle if I could get one cheap for sure

Y'all ever mix whiskies? I don't mean mixed drinks. I mean mixing two or more whiskies together with nothing else.
Just mixed half Single Barrel Balcones Single Malt finished in a Madeira cask with half Cask Strength Kilchoman Sanaig. NOM.
Believe it or not, the Balcones ends up being the dominant one here. I expected the peat bomb to dominate here and that absolutely did not happen.
The two together are somehow sweeter than either one separate.
There are four elements at play here:
>peat from the Kilchoman
>sherry cask from the Kilchoman
>heavy barrel char from the Balcones
>Madeira cask from the Balcones
The end result is like sweet BBQ meat. Burnt end drenched in sweet BBQ sauce.
Super fun experiment and incredibly delicious. Kind of similar to the infinite bottle I made once, decided it was perfect and I didn't want to alter it ever again, and just drank all of.
I am also, in general, fond of mixing peat bombs with sherry bombs. This always works. Laphroaig and Glendronach is a regular mix for me.
>>
>>21856890
There's also a saltiness going on here that isn't present in either one alone.
Very unexpected. I don't know how mixing these two produced sweetness and saltiness that wasn't present in either one alone.

i should get a bottle of booker's or knob creek 12 year. pairing with a padron 1964 diplomatico (churchill) natural. i just want something full-bodied, strong, and not over $100. i think stagg jr. is available too. it's been a while since i've had booker's. does 'non have any opinion on the 2025 releases?

Pairing cigars with alcohol is on of the dumbest thing ever, yeah.
You are tainting the flavour and get an inferior version of both.
>>
>>21857109
that's false and also i can just have more cigars and whiskey so who gives a fucking fuck
tonight i smoked a casa cuba doble dos paired with water and it was superb and tomorrow i might make a goddamn highball with mexican coke and whiskey you can't afford and guess what? there's 20 more pours in the bottle to have neat
your life is pathetic, not because of money but because you never take a risk to try something outside of your abstract idea of what should be
>>
pairing is a scam, everything should be enjoyed in its pure freebase form just like my cocaine
>>
>Your go to whisky + coke ?
>>
>>21857109
Having a tipple changes the palate. You taste either before, then after as the session goes along.
>>
the cigar and whisky pairing is a hard one to do correctly as they have different paces and both are very high in the attention they demand. it's like fucking to chicks at the same time. you either want 2 Stacies or 2 Becky's because if you mix their personalities they will clash and you'll have to kill them both. better to pair a cigar with something not meant to be focused on and mixed with sugar like rum or vodka since the real use for alcohol and sucrose when enjoying a cigar is to increase your tolerance to the nicotine thus increasing your consumption.
>>
when you do find a pairing with synergy it's pretty magical though

it's kinda cool how sipping whiskey with smoke in your mouth can be a very different sensation than puffing smoke with whiskey in your mouth

whiskey -> smoke is easier but i think smoke -> whiskey is better once you get the technique down
>>
Tried the Kilchoman Triskele Casks release. First time I think I’m disappointed a bit with Kilchoman, I’ve fucking loved everything else I’ve had from them. This is a Spec’s Exclusive, maybe it has something to do with that. It’s sweet and very smooth, very drinkable, but is definitely missing that Kilchoman character and peat that I love.

just finished a 10.5 hr day with 6 office hrs, 4 of which were useless. drunk off wild turkey because i know the survey manager won't have shit ready tomorrow. i got into this career because half office half field sounded good on paper (especially with some of the old timers talking about how they used to organize their work to coincide with the weather before arthritis made them indoor cats) but the office boredom is really getting to me.

I'm starting to really enjoy scotch when I can find higher proof expressions. I have Aberlour A'bunadh Alba and it's been growing on me. Sounds like you probably bought some low quality garbage like Wild Turkey or Jack Daniels. Next time buy only bourbon that is made by Buffalo Trace, the best distillery.

I went to a few liquor stores today looking for cask strength single malts and could not find anything except for Aberlour and Glenfarclas 105. So I'm going to have to try ordering Glendronach 12 CS, GlenAllachie 10 CS, and maybe Arran The Bothy.

For bourbons, one store had a nice selection of Bourbon DeLuxe single barrels at $60. I was tempted to try one but I don't need more bourbon. I'm also seeing lots of Weller SR and Buffalo Trace sitting on shelves which is always nice to see. And the age statements on the Makers cask strength keep growing, I think I saw some 7 years 5 months today.

I do not think you understand what "sweet" means, ESL anon.
>>
if you have trouble tasting beyond the smoke in a peated whisky, try pairing with a cigar. the smoke from the cigar dulls the smoke of the whisky so you can taste that subtle sweetness
>>
The vanillin in Laphroaig 10 is hardly subtle.

I open a new bottle of scotch with every month and wasted no time getting February started with craigellachie 13 - my first offering from the distillery. >>
>>21867063
Nope I'm in the middle of Kansas. I ordered late Sunday night and received it on Tuesday afternoon. I don't think they give other shipping options. And their price includes the import duties somehow so I didn't pay any extra.
>>
>>21867128
what was the total?

I'm in MO and my last order from them took 2 weeks because that damn ice storm last year hit the day after I made the order and I spent every day in my frozen garage waiting for a truck to show up. took no time for it to get into the states and should've only taken 2-3 after that based on previous orders.
>>
>>21867947
Why are you waiting in your garage for a delivery like a moron? It’s whiskey it’s not going to go bad if you let it sit on your doorstep for an hour.
>>
>>21867947
Total was about $300 (with $75 going to delivery which I think included the import fees). It's expensive for 2x700ml bottles but I couldn't find any way to get the Kavalan Solist for cheaper.
>>
>>21867952
I didnt want to miss the truck as the driveway is bad in the winter and it was "scheduled to arrive by 8pm" every day and previous orders needed to be signed for.
>>
>>21867956
damn, that's nearly double the shipping costs from before (depending on the conversion rate atm it was around $20 per bottle).
>>
>>21867960
Looks like they have a minimum shipping charge of about $60 for a single bottle plus $15 per extra bottle. So for a bulk order shipping wouldn't be too bad, if you ordered 6 it'd be about $20 per.
>>
>>21867973
>minimum shipping charge of $60 + $15 per bottle
yikes. I was already apprehensive about extra costs shipping had. that takes me right out of the pool. here's hoping the local starts bringing in some good shit.

I think the whole try new things meme needs to end with whiskey. Once you tried 20 bottles you know what you like. For me I’ve tried 300 dollar bottles and 10 dollar bottles and I’ve found for me it’s wild turkey and knob creek. I could survive the rest of my days on kc 9 and wt101. Stop feeding big whiskey with their scam bottles when cheap stuff is just as good or better.
>>
>>21869400
>I think the whole try new things meme needs to end with whiskey. Once you tried 20 bottles you know what you like.
This applies to bourbon but not Scotch.
>>
>>21869349
Aside from flying to Taiwan and buying it there, even with the $60 shipping it's probably still the cheapest option. I'd be unlikely to find it locally, and even if I did they'd probably want more than the $200 it cost me to order. Supposedly it's pretty good and worth the price, I haven't tried it yet.

>>21869400
I disagree. I have about 40 open bottles and still find myself developing a more discerning palate. And I'm finding enjoyment in everything from all styles of single malts to bourbons and ryes and all the weird stuff in between. There are a handful of bottles that I wouldn't buy again but most of them have some unique characteristic(s) that makes it valuable to have as an option. Though many of the bourbons don't stand out, sure.

WT and the Russell family are honorable. I can buy a handle of 101 for 39 dollars when they could be charging much more for such a high quality whiskey. Small distilleries are mostly run by millennial soy boys trying to sell you overpriced whiskey using lame marketing tactics. Whiskey isn’t a personality or a life style I’ll stick to the original distilleries for my whiskey needs.

While I can see how on the surface level it might seem a bit silly but when you think about it both Beam and WT offer the best values in whiskey.
KC9, KC 12, WT 101 and Rarebreed are all way undervalued for how good they are. If some small distillery was making kc9 or wt101 they would be charging a minimum of 50 dollars and rare breed would be 100.
While both of these distilleries, especially beam make more expensive stuff they still offer low priced high quality hooch for us whiskey connoisseurs. They are the anti-buffalo trace/hipster small distillery.
