My Uni had a study abroad program during which we spent a weekend in Hamburg. They put us in a """hotel""" on Steindamm Straße, just around the corner from the Hansaplatz. I think the area of the city is called St. Georg, it was about half a kilometer east of the Hauptbahnhof.
It was by far the most sketchy shit hole I've ever had the displeasure of spending time in, bar none.
For reference, I live in the west side of Chicago and spend a lot of time in the south side of Chicago. I hear gunshots almost nightly during the summers. There was a shooting in front of my apartment not long ago, and somebody was murdered a block away last month.
That part of Hamburg, however, was still far worse.
