I want to get my mom something nice. I'm torn between either a nice chef's knife, like the miyabi birchwood 8" or some sort of knife sharpening system to keep her current knives sharp. She doesn't really have any nice knives (a few wusthofs and the rest are cuisinart/cutco garbage from 20+ years ago), but she loves cooking. Shes got a KitchenAid, la crusets or whatever that muslim brand is, etc. and the prep side of kitchen gear is the only thing I can think she might appreciate.

Whetstones aren't an option, she's never going to get good at them and neither am I (I have a few but I suck ass and don't have the autism to get good with them to keep her knives sharp)

Any recommendations on knife sharpening system thats actually decent for sub $500? Some sort of jig setup that takes the guesswork out of it?

If her knives have bolsters, just get her a gift certificate for a bunch of sharpening sessions

If they don't, get her a Chef's Choice 1520

Project Farm has done some reviews on knife sharpeners, iirc he found that the Lansky one was the best. You could look on youtube if you wanted to see the other ones he tested. As for a knife as long as it has a good carbon steel blade most everything else is fluff.

Don't get a woman a nice knife. She will not take care of it and 3 months later you'll find out it got rusty or blunt and she threw it out

wusthofs are nice you fucking yellow fever ape

get her a nice knife, anon. It's a great gift.

I handed my mother a sharp knife once and she immediately cut herself
she'll blame you if this happens

In some cultures, being gifted a knife symbolizes cutting ties/severing relationship

food for thought anyway. I was gifted a knife by someone who coincidentally never really appreciated me and then mostly cut me out of their life, and I didnt realize what the knife gifting meant until a decade later

If you wanna get her a knife or blade, have her buy it from you for $1

I ended up ordering this bunka since it fills a niche somewhere between her wusthof chefs knife and pearing knife. I also got a 3 wheel water stone grinder specifically meant for 12° bevel knives. So it won't help any of her other knives but it should keep picrel usable

Or maybe they knew you were into cooking so they got you a thoughtful gift and through superstitious nonsense you were fooled into misinterpreting it as something else.
This is why honesty needs to be expected, otherwise everyone interprets everything as something else.

don't buy a knife sharpener for someone else unless they've expressed to you that they are interested in knife sharpening. if their knives are dull then they haven't cared enough to keep them sharp themselves already and won't do so just cause you got them a sharpener. my mother in law always marvels at how sharp my knives are and how nice they are to use but will never bother to sharpen her own knives no matter how many times i show her how easy it is to do. just sharpen your mom's knives for her and she'll be happy. if you want to buy her a thing, a knife would be a better gift and you can just sharpen it for her when needs be.
