The goal here would be to preserve the integrity of the top and bottom bun keeping them from getting soggy while isolating other ingrediants.
Similar ingredients should be paired the sauces (ketchup and mustard) can easily mix.
American cheese is a glue when heated, so if you want something to stick , it needs to be attached. Meats and cheeses pair well. Bacon cheese burger works well both linguistically and functionally as the cheese binds the burger and bacon to the bun.

lettuce and onion are is an insulator for the wet ingredients like sauces. The less stable vegetables like tomato and pickle should be paired near the center of the burger to ensure they don't slip out.

The order IMO should be:
top bun
bacon
cheese
burger
ketchup and mustard
pickle
tomato
lettuce
bottom bun
(as listed in the image, not by my preference)
